  1. Trimming will affect the coat as does using thinning scissors . well brushed pants have length and layers which are easy to brush . Thinners and clipping alters the layers and long term encourages matting more as the hair lengths grow differently. yes I’m a groomer and own coated breeds . We explain all the pros/cons to short cut options but at the end of the day dogs get dags & knots as there not brushed regularly ,there hair is just like ours
  2. As 2 different brands where given its more a case of where the regime stands . We use nobivac for 1 and 2 and there coverage is different to other brands . If you have taken out pet insurance be mindful of what cover they guarantee based on vaccinations, for some that 3 Vacc means fully vaccinated covered . Vaccination schedules are based on the actual brands used . Puppy Vaccination Schedules Vaccines are given at the following ages, based on the brand chosen by your vet: 6 weeks of age: Nobivac®, Duramune®, Protech® 8 weeks of age: Duramune®, Protech®, Canigen®, Canvac® 10 weeks of age: Nobivac®, Duramune®, Protech® 12 weeks of age: Canigen®, Canvac® 16 weeks: All brands Most puppies have already been given their first vaccine before sale. Make sure you then check with your vet when the next dose is due. In our clinic, it’s at 10 weeks of age, for example. Here’s the same information in table form. Canigen C3/C4 Canvac C4 Duramune C3/C4 Nobivac DHP Protech C3/C4 6 weeks X X X 8 weeks X X X X 10 weeks X X X 12 weeks X X 16 weeks¹ X X X X X Protected² 14 weeks 14 weeks 12 weeks 11 weeks 12 weeks
  3. You need to brush more often ,the hr you waste each week would be better spent on 10 mins more often brushing through correctly ,wet pants not brushed will matt even more . Yes you can trim the pants back BUT it wont stop the knots as it still needs to be brushed out shorter or long & easier to brush out long pants
  4. Irrespective of costs the breeder needs to be informed of what the vet believes it has so they can inform other puppy buyers . Start there ,get a feel from the conversation as to how they may react . They may want there vet to speak with your vet to make sure its defiantly parvo . Does the puppy have health insurance some breeders pups go with 6 weeks pet insurance. Personally im not sure why you would post on a forum first off without letting the breeder know in case other puppy buyers are at risk. Parvo is a live vaccine so they will test positive whether it’s actually parvo is another thing .Many vets will say parvo but it’s not always correct Could be severe colitis hence allowing for an open conversation with the breeder
  5. No boarding kennel will take it as it’s underage and not fully vaccinated . Depends if this is a registered breeder or just someone having a litter . if an ANKC breeder pup couldn’t be handed over till Saturday anyway due to age unless they had applied for special permission due to eXTreme circumstances which this wouldn’t be . Pup can’t fly till it’s 8 weeks and will need a valid fit to fly certificate Flights on weekends are limited anyway and it would depend on where the closest airport is that accepts live freight . i guess hiring a car or counting your loses and not getting this pup and finding a breeder closer .
  6. When is the puppy 8 weeks old & ready to leave . What pick up date had you arranged prior too this?? What was the original method of transport going to be ?? Issue with many transporters & even the airlines is there monitoring the severe heat at present . Virgin has certainly informed transporters & people they will cancel flight travel if deemed in the safety of the dog . Not sure if any of the road transporters are prepared to move dogs during this heat either & it would be a risk for a young puppy . For flying depending on age it would need a fit to fly vet check
  7. Depends on how many dogs the breeder has ,they may be boarding there dog/s or taking them with them. So in the scheme of things not strange . It would be more a case of when they pup was ready to leave & what arrangements have/had been made . In our last litter we had one person phone the day before pick up to say they wanted it too stay with us for the next 2 weeks ,no drama in the end we had to phone them & place a deadline on pick up or there holding fee returned & pup resold so not always a cut and dry story .
  8. Consider raising the bowl . Water bowl players are a pain so maybe look at teaching him a play pool spot and no go spot
  9. We had a puppy buyer return her pup after a week (no drama's we take them back) . The pup became so overwhelming for her with regret she nearly had a break down . She was a wonderful loving person, owned a dog many many many years ago. Had been out & scene the pups & honestly was a perfect home we had no regrets sending her home with pup but it was like she went into Postpartum Depression. Her husband & family where wonderfully supportive but she couldn't cope & the family & great discussion with us all agreed the best choice was to return the pup . This is the worse scenario granted .
  10. There not designed for coats there just a quick fix that doesn't solve the issue just keeps adding to it Coats are designed in layers so your brush them accordingly . Most of the quick fix tools do damage the coats & damage the correct coat . I have showdogs im also a groomer .It makes no difference what you dog is the tools are still the same . Yes we own the tools but they need to be used with great care but nothing beats brushing the coat out correctly for a healthy happy coat that doesn't end up broken & damaged by the wrong tools . Undercoat rakes work on the right coat ,a comb works on the right coat & pin or gentle slicker way easier than the other tools ,lightly mist coat & brush it through
  11. Neither the coat king or furminator .Coat King if desperate & providing its the right one for your dogs coat not the generic number they suggest A good undercoat rake & a comb & brush is all you need. Spray coat before brushing to minimise breakage & static & brush weekly
  12. The issue i see with her schedule is all activities involve you ,there doesn't seem to be much time based on life skills on its own & how to cope if her routine ever changes or just simply learning to chill . I have a breed that is very active & i focus more on how to be calm & chilled more than training to be be over switched on & having a busy brain that wants to explode when it doesn't know how to "simply cope" doing nothing . The Lab is teaching manners by ignoring the behaviour ,it doesn't need to react to teach manners so make sure your reading the signs correctly .I would be working more on teaching calmness at that time than telling it off & pulling it away . This is a perfect time to teach self control & calm . I would certainly use the crate if you feel its out of hand ,the only way it will become a punishment is due to your reaction before putting it in .
  13. They make a noise when it zaps bugs and can smell . Our dogs hate them so not used
  14. Depends how you have approached the breeder regarding this ,being pushy & demanding compared to enthusiastic can be seen very differently . When you say heavily involved i guess that comes down to what you mean by that ??Are you wanting a certain nature, pretty markings, what are your priorities .I would gather you have already expressed what your wanting in your future pet so the breeder is savvy to that knowledge . If both sides haven't communicated anything that is a different issue So maybe tells us what you where expecting or hoping to do & see whether that was also realistic . We have had people who wanted to come out and do there own "test" problem is those people had no clue how to do the tests correctly, how to interpret the outcome & at the end of the day you haven't paid for a puppy but you can easily set a puppy backwards & say no not for me after breaking it .
  15. If the animal leaves NSW on that register the chip details do not show up & has to be re registered on a registry that is Aussie wide. One of the pains of purchasing a dog from NSW when you live in another state ,most people don't know this I would query to be only registered on the database as out of state horses wont be on it
  16. Not strange but it comes down to sorting this info out prior to committing . First off where are you on the list ?? If you where not first then selection process comes down to where you place, what you may have been after sex wise ,what was actually then available from some of the criteria etc etc . Sometimes this means not alot of choice . This is how we do it . No one comes out till after there vaccinated & microchipped to look at pups this is 7 weeks. Prior to this we have spoken with the new owners at length to understand what they want (this covers kids age wise, grandkids, outside activities, show, pet, performance & any other essential aspects to the pup being the right choice . We then have to look at the list .everyone wants to be first but that isn't how it works. Breeder depending on what there breeding for will look at show potential first in our case (or performance, therapy etc etc or just well matched pet)) We then have to factor what sexes people wanted, what was born, those who want a set colour, those who are open minded & those that don't want to change there must haves,in the end some miss out by there lack of flexibility, others benefit due to those people .Some miss out due to known of that sex others lucky due to more of there desired sex. The people get invited out to look at what pups are available for them & those at the end of the list don't get the choice but are more than welcome to decline what is left & wait ,we don't take deposits so there not tied into saying yes . We will also select the pups we know will better suit homes over others & again up to the owners if they want that selected pup or decline . The times we do give priority on the list is for the people with special needs children as its important the pup in some ways chosen them & feels they can happily exist . We explain this clearly at the first contact & most of those contacting ask about the process . When they do come out & look at the puppies or pup & they are happy with that they have decided on we take a holding fee which is receipted & the microchip of said puppy listed on there ,at collection pup is scanned to confirm the one agreed on .
  17. Why not just contact the vet & ask them exactly what the diagnosis is,get a printed report for the dog file & that your assisting your mum on understanding the issue but she isn't actually sure herself . There may be other factors that need to be considered that requires more understanding
  18. What is the puppies history prior to coming too you or what age did you get him?? Chances are whilst trained most likely not to the doggy door & whilst he uses it fine when your home you most likely also cue the right behaviour & reward.once on his own hasn't quiet put the puzzle together on going out without you home or with that reassurance . Wits end a tad dramatic after all this pup hasnt got the memo to your expectations so go back to basics .If possible limit the access to the house for a period ,sometime hooking the flap up when not home allows for more bravery on the pups behalf but just stick to a very good out the door routine & independence of using it
  19. Walks don't need to end you just need to make them shorter even just to the neighbours house & back . Walks no matter how short are more about the mental health off the dog getting out the front & still seeing the outside world & the brain kept active ,its also still important the dog gets up as it keeps the joints moving its just about modifying . Just leave the door open & allow him to make his choices outside just might be more relaxed & less busy
  20. I think you would be better just getting on with either applying for the permit but above all you need to contact the breeder & discuss the issue that has cropped up .It would be irresponsible to take on the pup without knowing if you can actually keep it . The breeder may be prepared to hang on to it a week longer whilst you get the paperwork submitted for approval otherwise it may be better to pull out at present & find out what you need to comply with for your local council, whether it requires the other residents to approve the extra dog etc etc. I gather its done to stop people over committing to animals in a very small area that can impact those more closely around them
  21. Many vets will fob you off at that age ,some will over sell & others treat the dog like each day is a bonus at its age no need to spend much ,it is but it can enjoy some comforts in the progress, personally at that age i would be asking to give a low dose anti inflam meds a go like meloxicam . You don't even have to give it daily but you may be surprised how more restful/relaxed he may be & if limping after walks thats what the pain meds job is for . Discomfort like us can be confusing .
  22. Kalmpets training centre would be a good start & would have a good base of at home trainers . Other things to ask is how is the dog traveling in the car especially if baby is in the back . Nothing wrong with working with a trainer ,would be nice if more potential owners actually considered that into there pet ownership plan instead of the crap excuses we hear & work with daily in the kennels & grooming salon .Infact groomed a client today whose dog is nearly 2 & asks the same questions every 6 weeks & seems to think the magic fairy will train the dog to not pull, behave around other dogs ,stand for him to be brushed & not destroy the garden when they go out .Inform they need a trainer to help with there communicating with there dog ,not there furbaby as they call it but hasn't bothered except decide maybe a day at doggy daycare will give them a break Like you say easy to cancel or cut back . Unfortunately i tend to find rescues have some strange ideas on some things & can be a bit flippant in pushing some dogs out the door especially at this busy time
  23. I wouldn't foster until you have personally sorted out your feelings & the dogs . Your coming into good weather in the scheme of things . I would switch off from wanting him inside & maybe making him feel overwhelmed . Is he on pain medication??Has his hearing or eye sight got worse over the last few months ,these can change the routine of dogs immensely even without losing the best friend He may be feeling old age soreness & they can get restless & prefer certain areas as its cooler & quieter .14 is a great age . Maybe do smaller walks & some more gentle mind games where you can see how he is really going . We currently have a 14 yr old who lives with others, she is going through a phase of being more a loner & doing things that is not typical but make her happy .We just play with it unless its not in her best interests .Her vision & hearing has got worse over the last few months so he behaviour has changed nothing concerning for us as we have been through this with many a dog but we know its time for her to find her strange happy place She is know on increased pain meds for some arthritis as the warmer weather & air con made her more unsettled . Getting old sucks, hopefully your golden oldie settles
  24. Keep in mind not all bitches want to live with there own pups & no guarantee it will make her settle any better as the greater amount of time & energy is going to be spent on the puppy unless you work a schedule of time management for both plus a baby that will need the time aswell I would also not recommend a female puppy . Personally with a new born in the home i would just take on the older bitch & give her the quality time to adjust to a new life,a little person & all the other changes in her life .Train her to be a great house pet & then look at adding another family member once you have gauged her true nature in your home Is the rescue BAER testing the puppies for deafness?? If they are potentially selecting the puppy what are they basing the criteria on ??
