  1. Teething can play havoc & they can go days & weeks picking at there food. My current youngster has just finished this process. For a month or so it was a pain with food due to teething but now back to being a hoover. I did hand feed my boy BUT it was done during training sessions so any food he got was his reward for learning as he would aeat more this way BUT dont hand feed for no reward . Basically dont pander either & chop & change. For my boy re adding some goats milk did the trick
  2. Agree seek more specialized help. You also need to consider the other dogs when your pup is going feral.Whilst yours needs socializing it shouldnt at the expense of the other pups & basically all the socializing in the world wont help until you understand how to control the pups, its triggers & your reaction.Once taught this you will find things will happen far quicker & you will be able to control the pup.
  3. Betadine or similiar here.We dont use Dettol except for hosing the backyard ,it smells great for days
  4. Not true.Over 20 years we had it badly in our area(lived elsewhere) .Our dog got it twice & she wasnt the only one
  5. Ange yes you will learn but to be honest i would be more disappointed with your vet. I really can not understand why they even considered the injection when she has been sick all week & i presume on some pain relief for the HOD. You really do have to question what your vet wants to give especially when they have a history, dont presume there a vet & now whats right many dont & get away with too many things because people dont question or stand there ground & the reality is you will be paying for an expensive vet bill not them.
  6. What are the risks associated with the use of ProHeart®6? Based on Canadian and foreign data, the following types of adverse reactions may be associated with the use of ProHeart®6 in dogs: * Allergic reactions are the most frequent adverse drug reactions associated with the use of ProHeart®6. Although rare, some of these reactions have involved anaphylaxis, a severe type of allergic reaction which may result in circulatory collapse, shock and even death. These reactions have been observed when ProHeart®6 was the only medication administered and when this same veterinary drug was administered together with vaccines and/or other drugs. * Symptoms of allergic reactions in dogs may include itchiness, hives, swelling of the face and ears, lack of energy, diarrhea and vomiting. Allergic reactions vary in severity and sometimes require medical attention or hospitalization. * Various hematologic or blood abnormalities have been reported following ProHeart®6 administration, the most frequent being increased white blood cells (leucocytosis), low red blood cells (anemia) and low platelets (thrombocytopenia). * Seizures were the most consistently reported adverse drug reactions involving the central nervous system, with a majority of episodes occurring in the first three days after administering ProHeart®6 injection. Other neurological signs that affect the nervous system include trembling, nervousness, confusion and weakness and may be associated with the use of ProHeart®6. * Evidence of injury to the liver has also been observed following ProHeart®6 administration.
  7. Goodluck but at this time of year you need to plan well ahead
  8. I agree with rysup. I would also be considering strokes
  9. No matter how it occured, thats what Public Liability is for!!! Exactly but many groomers do not have this which is crazy.
  10. yes we have had a number of dogs pass out eating necks . "Relax, your dog will know how to eat meaty bones " Wish that was true but it isnt the case & any form of bone, rawhides chews etc etc should be given when a human is around.
  11. Here we use the crates or the kennels for dogs being left all day by prior arrangement only. Dogs here are booked in for said time & to be picked up by said time. For the small few that dont like crates i say tough. Infact in 24 plus years of grooming we only had one person who over the phone insisted the dog musnt be crated or placed in a run.We refused the dog as we can not guarantee nor would we lie jus to please here. I hate the bench idea & refuse to bench my dogs at the royal they go in crates, far to dangerous for my liking. Many vets have tie points for large dogs after surgery & i again refuse to have my big dogs tied & having a co operative vet sit there after they come out if need be There is no point having a feral 'fifi" running around lose to try & catch again. For us crates mean all clients are safe & you need the crates bewteen sweeping, bathing & for those lazy owners who cant turn up on time
  12. all our sole pups survived perfectly well with no issues at all. I think for some being a sole pup is apain because they have to put a little more effort in where the sole pup is great fun & the things you come up with to amuse them is endless. Our sole pups have the best natures too
  13. Breed can play a big part in the grading. I agree you really need to discuss this with the puppy owners vet or your own. The reality is the pup could live for ever with no ill effects or it may get worse need meds(that can be expensive) shorten its life span & struggle a bit. Basically you need to consider the the best to worse case in relation to the breed & current age
  14. "Having said that, my boy does consume chicken fat and beef fat from the raw meats and bones he takes daily" As a mini breeder we would never feed beef i large quantaties as its a well known contributor to stones which can be common in meats .aslo a breed so highly prone t pancreatitis & high blood pressure fatty meast would be the last oon there diet
  15. our minis have gulped chicken wings/necks & passed out .They dont chew them they just swallow. putting a tennis ball in can help or any large odd shaped item, you can change it around if you wish
  16. If your yard is safe pup should be allowed outside now. All our pups spend hours outside from 6 weeks on with no issues at all & they are raised in the house. When you collected your pup it will have spent many hrs outside before it came home most likley from 6 weeks onwards. Your pup isnt a little fry & unless your garden is dangerous the weather is perfect for leaving it outside for good spells now. Being a in the pen for that time wont allow it to get muscle condituon & life experience.Pups need to learn from touch & feel & this is the age to allow it. AS for home alone hundreds of young pups & dogs do this every day & they survive very well.Make sure all is safe BUT until you allow it to happen whilst your at home it will be harder on the pup when the time comes. You have the perfect situation working from home to allow this pup to get use to outside on its on where you can check & bring in/out as you please BUT when you suddenly want it to stay more & more your pup may find it very hard to deal with
  17. I would toss the can,not only expensive to feed doesnt do much in the weight/condition section as a sole diet. The only time we use it is as a teaser to get old/young or recovering dogs to eat but never as a sole diet. Some dogs are just simply skinny, some a very hard to maintain weight & yes some its a family trait
  18. Our puppies at 6 week(mini schnauzers) run an acre, pups develop through mental stimulation.Touch, smell & sight. They need to experience life to learn. If your yard is safe then there are no issues & if your yard isnt safe then it will be a danger for life. You will find that pups from most breeders have experienced so much before they go to there new homes & then the new owners panic & restrict what is normal to them. They are longer are able to run about outside & the backyard ends up being a bigger novelty . My new pup at 4 months would have gone retarded if not allowed outside to be the gundog it is.He sleeps on my bed with the other boys BUT spends all day outside playing, self exercising, hunting birds ,all part of health maintance aswell.Pups that arent able to run about arent using there muscles & conditioning themselves for there growing body. "It doesn't sound like a huge amount of time in the pen to me " They way i read is it spends alot of time in the pen except for toilet breaks & play times & then in the bathroom for the night. I dont read it as spending a good deal out ?? Maybe im wrong .
  19. To be honest she needs more time out of the pen & walking about. She doesnt pick when its time to come back inside allow her to be independant outside more even in these early days
  20. Dachies are barkers by nature ,They have to be vocal to do there work(alert handlers to the badger hole),the std longs though where actually created as water retrievers hence there more gundog like nature
  21. Persist but how much time is she actually in the pen in relation to running around outside?? Your puppy at 9 weeks should be spending a good decent time outside alone if your yard is safe.Pup is most likley getting frustrated so you need to make sure you dont create a playpen phobia do to it being over used.
  22. If she has inflamed ears that can transfer to eyes.Teething can also do horrid things & cause redness & sore eyes. You can buy liquid gel tears from the chemist & use that to increase the lubrication at this time. Ear mites are easily fixed & but are a pain. Diet can play a part but there are also breed specific needs that one must be aware off
  23. I have owned a std smooth & handled in the ring all the other varities. The std Longs by far have the best nature & are more laidback, less demanding & great all round dogs The std smooths are very aloof, brilliant guard dogs, tend to be more one person but truly devoted to there family. Mini smooths should havea very biddable nature & not be afriad off starngers. The wires are clowns & luv life. There are a number off excellent breeders in WA but pups are usually sold before there born, If you want to see all the breeders & there dogs the best place would be the royal show sat 4oct.You will have many to see & touch. The WA dachie club held there champ show about 2 weeks ago plus the hound club show which would have been a good viewing place, There isnt as many shows coming up soo the royal will have the best turnout. In WA all pups must be registered but we dont have to sell them with papers. Weight is very important in dachies as is good exercise & not over jumping. The spine is there biggest enemy . Dachies should never be treated as precious flowers.these are powerful working breeds who hold all there bold character & allowed to be spoilt you will have a horrible monster on your hands. They can be very yappy & snappy if not socialized & given activity. The std & minis are nore vocal than the longs. I can highly suggest Searow kennels listed below,i have handled there dogs & they have great natures & good breed type
  24. The thing is these things arent once & awhile type deals. My dogs go every 2 months or more if needed. Its about maintaining whats there all the time not when its broken
