  1. Okay next year im considering attempting an ET title on one of my boys.I was just wondering if any of the venues used this year where better/worse & easier to work(grass V tarmac) My dog is a gundog & is fairly good at not reacting to wildlife(we have roos/rabbits/bandicots ) in our area so he,s learnt not to react on our daily rides here BUT he is a full coated showdog & im happy to pick crap out of his coat but i dont want to ruin his coat
  2. Even though the site is out of date they will certainly be able to help. Many of the breeders groom or now of good groomers in certain areas. Sometimes travelling that bit further & getting a the correct schnauzer groom is better than getting a horrible job closer
  3. May i ask what you have read ??? Having owned the breed for over 24 yrs i havent read any thing saying this breed has a tendancy to be DA. I am just curious more to whether it is in relation to people perserving them as terriers in articles or not. We board many minis we have breed & others & have yet to see a DA mini, as i say rarely do they appear because the breed by nature is very social. The other sizes is a whole new ball game
  4. You rarely have unsocial minis, infact i have yet to see any. I think you do need to seek help to make sure you are reading it all right This is only good advice if done correctly & as read on DOL many a time people who have followed this advice have also ended up with a pup terrified of dogs. Dont panic at his first experience, depending on the other dogs it can be very overwhelming & being patient & taking baby steps works wonders.providing your instructor knows what there doing your little one will enjoy mixing sooner than you think. Mins are brave soles
  5. Some send blood for CLAD testingto sweden so it can be done
  6. Ungvita fis oil is better than the paw paw but again if around dirt it will collect it & stick. The purple sparya is amust. Withboarders that come in with ears eaten we use the purple spray & white zinc cream
  7. I also i remember your original post that she nipped at your face when you would go done to her.i gather she was told off & at present may have no idea what you want as far as touching
  8. It could be the way you approach her, Dont mean to be personal but ar eyou a smoker??Some dogs for example find the smell on hands very overwhelming. Very strong perfume the same. I wouldnt worry, just ignore & reward . Your pup is still very young
  9. I wouldnt worry.i think your OH has it right & she is only a youngster . For example i have 3 dogs here. One is a super snuggler, will snuggle on the lounge, will snuggle on the floor.will snuggle on anything that you sit/stand on. My older boy has never been a snuggler but simply adores being acknowledged whether it be a simple touch or the sound of your voice.he is avery loving dog but he doesnt require touchy/feelys to feel loved. My young boy at bedtime is a bed snuggler, when outside he again isnt a snuggle BUT he loves shaking hands or simply parading around with his ball talking & me again acknowledging that hes special.
  10. From the other posts i think your pup is Pom. Poms area spitz breed & can most certainly be independent. I show a few poms for friends & i wouldnt call them cuddly, they love to be touched & talked to but i wouldnt call them a cuddling breed. The ones i handle enjoy sitting on your knee being touched, enjoy there tummies tickled but not snuggling. From experience i find many people frieghten there pups when they come home as they often pick them up & want hug & cuddle . Me as a human im not a cuddly type person & feel uneasy when people greet with ahug type thing & yes dogs can also feel its not for them & often when over done the dog thinks ill just not bother coming over. Yes your breed is cute & small but there not handbag dogs ,they are very lively & enjoy nothing more than doing zoomies & knowing your watching. Whilst im not saying your pushy some people feel the need to pick up & make the pup snuggle & it wont happen.
  11. If your breeder is a good one they will answer any question & may even now of good vets in your area. Im not sure what you mean when they say change it regularly, most breeders have a basic diet that you will add to but not change quickly or dramactically as there ttummies are learning about new foods. Smell your dogs feet .chances are there what stinks
  12. Sorry but your vet dosent know what hes talking about a lot of vets know stuff all about feeding dogs The diet the breeder recomended is a good diet. I dont know why hes got an odour but the diet sounds perfect Totally agree & you should have consulted with your breeder about changing & whether what you have changedto is suitable for your breed. Did you buy what the vet recommended or sold?? Are you sure its an odour.have you owned dogs before??Some breeds do have more of a smell & no amount of washing will change it its just something that goes with that breed. Did the vet say he smelt?? Does everyone else say he smells bearing in mind its winter & even the most cleanist dogs can smell dirty with wet feet & moist underbellies
  13. Same here.i have never weighed food & never will. Each dog is an individual & i cater for each one.
  14. yep find a different trainer. Also how much does the pug stir things up & does the border collie get the discipline simply because its bigger?? Pugs can dish it out well & can stir havoc so is this equal play but you panic thinking it will hurt the little one??
  15. we board alot of dogs who have had it done.often 4 weeks after & certainly no crating at all just common sense,easy/gentle exercise ,swimming & light lead walking. Infact constant crating will cause a massive amount of muscle loss which is not easy to restore.I dont now of any vet that gives that advice because its all about getting them going again with a gentle programme to retain condition & replace condition. I cant fathom why anyone would let there dog jump those heights when it is carrying such issues, that is total madness
  16. So how long does he spend in the laundry each day.I gather hes there at night & then there during the day aswell if not home?? How much outside time does he get???
  17. It isnt confusing really. He hasnt had home privileges & now he has it he has been told off for being naughty When outside he makes you happy. Do you still crate him or has he lost his crate??
  18. Totally agree with this & working in the kennel industry we havent had one client bring meds that where out of the foils except for the common ones (prednil, tribacterialetc ) Even ourselves have never had a vet do so & we have used a number of clinics over the years. The only thing we find vet practices arent doing is placing the sticky label from vaccs on the cards or print outs & we are telling our clients to insist the sticker is placed on.
  19. QUESTIONS 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc). Started showing them in Jh in early 80.s. Have since owned & campaigned the breed for 17 yrs but had consistent involvement since 83. 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? http://iscv.org.au This gives the best reading of history .its hard to do a small summary. 3. How common is it in Australia? common 4. What is the average lifespan? 14 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Should be very outgoing & enjoy life 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? Varying lines can require different needs BUT in general a good walk daily will happily keep them sane.Irish can be great lounge lizards 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? yes if like any breed gets the full complement of family time 9. How much grooming is required? Again can vary on lines & some are heavy coated & some little .For heavier coated it can be time consuming 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? They are big dogs & like any big dog it comes back to training.Trained correctly & they would adapt easily to both options 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? .DNA for CLAD & PRA,thyroid is often done aswell 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) dogs should be hip scored DNA for PRA/CLAD breeding should be from ideally a clear to clear but a clear to carrier can be done with progeny tested. thyroid is done by some These are the main ones
  20. We use coprice in the kennel. As many dogs arent on a high premiun brand we have found it excellent with those boarders. Of the inexpensive range we have had no issues at all.we at present only use the family dog
  21. If she gets bad ears always treat the feet aswell, especially the back feet because thats what the dog uses to scratch them. If its yeasty & horrid then it goes back n forth from feet to ears
  22. Front feet chewing we find is common with dogs with anal gland issues. Does your dog get bad ears?? Could she be in pain?? Have you tried a doggy chiro/bowen ?? My old boy has arthritis & on his bad days he will lick his front legs as often as possible. It seems to bring relief although undesirable.
  23. Even thoughh its winter dont fall into the trap of not getting the dog groomed. I did a poodle yesterday that took 3 hrs & was a felted mess Just clip her short & start again.a #4 blade should still be able to get through & the dog will be more comfy for it
  24. scrap the tin & milk, she doesnt need it. My crew get dry plus there raw. I dont feed beef mince as it has too many issues with it
  25. Does the dog like all the feet or just the front??
