Advice On How To Train My Children For Puppy Play!
Dogsfevr replied to cassvanm's topic in Puppy Chat
Get tthe older ones involved as much as possible & use time out if the kids dont follow instructions. If they dont play with scout the way you have role modelled then they lose the privileged . We hand this out to our puppy owners with kids as the pictures & concept works well for younger kids http://www.pets.dpi.vic.gov.au/01/main.htm -
Should also be noted Op has a cocker that has issues I need to get my Cocker out and interacting with other dogs and was wondering if anyone could maybe meet up at a park nearby with a VERY mellow dog? She is not aggressive but so fearful of strange dogs that she literally ......defecates herself...!! She is fine with our family's other dogs and I have tried taking her to dog training but the club I belong to is pretty intense and serous about training and her screaming, yipping and .....defecating is pretty much un-welcomed!

We sell many siblings to pet homes & in all the years we have never had issues. You will hear about bonding & the likes but it still happens with a years difference. When you have 2 dogs no matter what the age is & go to work & there home for that time common sense says they will enjoy each others company. The greater amjority of our owners who take 2 do so for all the right reasons & the owners arent idiots nor is it a case of us trying to make an easy sell,we have abreed that homing is a giant waiting list. Although i would be addressing the issue with your daughter because she could be sorely disappointed if the dog doesnt take to her due to being possessive ,often dogs finds these people off putting & tend to avoid them as they dont trust them .

I can understand what you want but do you want to own 2 large dogs.will you leave current dog home when you walk ?presuming the next dog does more?? Or will you walk both & then control one that doesnt react & one that will. I have owned big dogs for years & never believed i was safer & always took the same precations but of all the dogs i have owned the best protection dog was my Std smooth dachie but it also took a great deal of time to ensure his temp remained stable in society & the show ring but he would protect me till the end & this was often a major hassle in every day life

When we rehome older pups dogs we stress to the owners to be patient, that also applies to visitors, going out & over doing it. Each dog is different so your breeders & yourself i gather are well aware of each dogs nature & needs & the ease in which they should settle. We generally suggest staying home for atleast a week & then if things have settled well go out & about in small doses & build up. The main thing is these dogs need to trust you to deal with change & some do so very easily others take a tad longer . We area multi dog household & dont make any attempts to seperate, when they have to be away then generally cope well because they are brought up to be themselves even with company, the only time we have issues is when there elderly but that is to be expected. The key is for the kids bot to spoil them too much during the holidays because the dogs then need to deal with the >no kids"when they go back to school . The key is talk to your breeder & understand there current routine & work from there

What time do you feed her brekkie
-
I am aware of a number of dogs who required surgery as the bones had compacted.i will say those dogs where feed an enormous quantity
-
I think you will find we all do what you do with various post, they all eat out of there own bowl.
-
Here separate bowls BUT everyone is allowed a shared lick of a plate, which is a treat . It is great to have dogs who can share but im of the belief there bowl is there dinner & what goes in one may not be the same in another whether it be meds etc etc & its always easier to teach early the food rules

Really happy to know that some people feed the raw and kibble together and don't have issues. I am thankful for all the help you guys are giving me,going to make an email of all the info and send to my friends. By the way they have a Neo mastiff pup! All mine get raw.kibble together & never had issues in 25yrs

Argh a total pain. We get boarders who who do this & it drives you nuts. If dogs are really obsessed the self waters will still allow access but wont stop filling. The reality is try & stop the behaviour because it really has far more pitfalls. Generally the people with issue dogs have the round concrete slab & place the bowl inside or if you do a self water place it up the wall so it cant play but drink only

Good for you but ask any kennel owner who sees clients cards or receipt sheet weekly every year & you will see the greater majority of vets DO rip people off. What we see is very much the norm & just do a ring around & you will soon learn what is normal. The last 6 months has seen the most dramatic price rise in vaccs & yes for a product that isnt expensive yet has a massive profit made & why because its the most common thing people go to the vets for. We get breeder discount & what we pay & what the joe public pays & we save alot of $$$$$$ It isnt about vet bashing but about the fact many vets are very greedy & all you her is the equipment is expensive, that is part of the industry & something you now when opting for that field just like we do with our choice of equipment . The yearly heartworm also has a pretty price tag & again this has no equipment expense except keeping cool. I certainly dont want the best for nothing but i expect prices to be off value to what it cost to purchase said product even after adding a product margin. There is a difference bewteen providing good service with good prices & been plain greedy

Thank you Showdog. I'm always referring to it as Canine Cough not Kennel Cough and I think it would do well for everyone (including Vets) to do the same. Otherwise it does give the unsuspecting/inexperienced person the impression that their dog is safe from it if they don't go to kennels. The higher concentration of dogs together the bigger the chance of catching it. But it doesn't exclude the off-chance of picking it up from even only a one-dog meeting (directly or indirectly). Like Showdog said - it's like kids at school. Most vets are getting better are there cards state canine cough but some still state Kennel cough & yes it does mislead people . Its only when they suddenly get it & never been in a kennel they realise. Very frustrating as a kennel owner but people are learning
-
That didnt include the consult, they also had yearly heartworm so you could imagine that full bill. As for groomers very few get paid what they deserve because a good groomer is a master of all aspects
-
There making a good profit on vaccs because we all now it doesnt cost that much. A client last week boarded there dog whom had the 3 yearly at a cost of $190 Thats a very very good profit for that container

Picking a kennel in the hills doesnt guarantee anything or make it less likely. Some kennels are more well known for getting it more often for different reasons. If kennels allow grp playtimes then dog share water bowls ,this is the quickest transfer just like when people go to the dog parks & share water bowls Its simply a case of what clients bring in & how honest clients are & yes also the kennel informing you they currently have an affected dog/s Dogs can carry the virus for over half the year & the right situation become affected that includes your dog. Its no longer a winter virus & is all year round. We havent had it this year but it,s been around, some of the WA DOLERS have also had dogs affected from meets or small play dates. . If this was the vets wording then there idiots because its called canine cough & it isnt caught just in kennels. Your dog can catch it anywhere & the kennels get it because an affected dog comes in but because its like school some will & some wont get it. Vet needs a lesson in facts

Im not sure what the current wage is but are you a specialist of any breed or specific style. ie hand stripping(not carding) etc etc. That may allow for better negations
-
You are doing the right thing by not pursuing radiation. The dog i wrote about did & we groomed him every 8 weeks & saw the change & the toll it took. Whilst he lived 12 months they werent a happy 12 months. Enjoy.pamper & even venture in natural medicenes
-
Is his face groomed or very hairy?? Agree what does the breeder say

Gordies arent in full coat until 5/6 yrs even older. At 2 years they still have very little coat. My boy is just about 18 months & has a big coat for his age but in relation to the other setters he looks naked. His dad for example is just starting his big career at 7 & just hit prime coat. Gordons havent fully developed until 3 yrs & even then arent in there prime ,they are a very slow to mature & finish growing. Showing a gordon means patience because they are very very slow to mature & be in true bloom
-
It would be PTS here too. The mum knows she has issues & would most likely shun her ,in nature pup would be left to die . I applaud the fact your happy to keep a blind pup but having owned dogs with disabilities & a dog who was fully blind at 4 years it is alot of hardwork & requires you to give up alot of your time.We where lucky as we work from home & could cater for there needs. If i had a pup with these 2 issues i would PTS now whilst its less stressful than faced with the same possibility when older,it is much more distressing then especially when pup will be so reliant on you Your not giving up

Can You Use A Check Chain On A Coated Showdog?
Dogsfevr replied to angelsophie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The chain may make no difference. Still allow him to be a baby BUT i would be inclined to start addressing the pulling towards the judge because its a habit & until you start to break it it wont get better & if its pulling the movement goes with it. You just simply need to be more interesting at this stage .the judges are fun so you just need to be more fun. More a case of teaching him he still gets both but there is a time & a place -
My suggestion would be. Forget thinking about breeding at present & spend your time learning about grooming & what it requires to maintain a gordie coat(unless your a good groomer already). If your not offay with grooming start your time & effort there. Once you have started to master the art & understand your bitches faults you can start looking at males. remember though gordies are slow matures. Google.try & attend gordon specialities either in NSW or Vic to see what is there. Research your girls pedigree so you understand what dogs are there through the generations. Looking at photos try & see what faults stand out through the lines also barring in mind it could be poor grooming. Its great your wanting to learn now but sometimes its best to master the other things first & those basics are needed to teach new pet owners who may want to show & ask you for advice or assistance. As already said your breeder is the one who will now there lines, health results & who is DNA tested for colour etc etc
