  1. That is the difference with the US/canadian show world, they do congratulate & it would be rude not too, here its always rude to congratulate I"m not sure I understand this...considered rude to say 'congratulations'? Is it rude to also ask if a fellow exhibitor is ready to proceed around the ring when the judge says 'take them around'? Because I'm not getting much of that consideration either. Is it rude when exhibitors crowd in a line up and they are asked not to, or to back up a bit? Because I got that impression when I've had to request someone not allow their dog to stand on top of mine. I was taught to say please and thank you.....perhaps I"m being rude to do that in shows here then? I guess i worded it badly. I have many US videos of dogs shows where exhibitors gather in the middle & shake hands, pat there back or a verbel well done. You rarely see it here(infact i have never seen it done in that fashion here after showing in 4 states). Some as already pointed out here dont take the Congrates well so for some saying it is like its "rude" (need a better word to insert) We dont have the sportsmanship of the Us in "congrates " here . As for the rest i always say are you ready but many dont they just take off , As for crowding well im polite the first offence but dont take likely to fools, what you expect i expect except here the congrates just isnt done in the same manner
  2. I now he said no clubs but there are others which is why i said join them. 5 yrs for me would be a waste ,Berners arent rare & what you see now may not be the same in 2 yrs time. You can certainly learn the ropes of showing /grooming & the likes but to enquire now i would say most breeders wouldnt even put the name on there list . 2 yrs the breeders would have some idea of planed breedings or what there future holds. I dont even now what my plan is for 5 yrs
  3. I have been showing for 25 yrs & maybe i deal with it differently. I see the tainties no different than the morons on the road he cut you off or dont follow the rules, the same as the crazy shopper with the trolley who rams through without thinking ,the people who get drunk & ruin your event & the list goes on. These same people are everywhere & will have issues whether it be at shows or general life. I can certainly say the offenders i now are the same everywhere not just shows. What i have found in the last 10/15 is new comers expecting so much like there owed. They seem to forget that we all started from scratch & when we started we didnt have show classes, easy internet access, people didnt help back then like now or in our case a breed not well known so help was very hard to come by. We did have people who helped within reason but by the same token we are a believer in educating yourself. We have to help ourselves first to gain respect off others. I help alot of people now whether it be handling & grooming & some flourish others you start to bang your head against the wall as they make no effort to learn but plenty of whinging but you keep assisting with an open mind . When we started we paid a fortune for a VHS camera & we videoed & videoed & watched & watched & learnt from our mistakes. These days for you can buy cameras so cheap & its the best tool around for honesty. We have video friends who whinged & complained about losing BUT couldnt accept what they where doing was contributing or that the dog had obvious faults. After viewing the penny dropped although a small few will still be blind to what they see I dont think you need to be thick skin you simply need to be realistic & honest. You need to appreciate the opposition & also appreciate what some judges look for.I have bombed out big time BUT having watched how.what the judge was looking for could see the pattern of what they wanted & had no issues losing after all we dont always win People are there worst enemies & many out there dont see there own actions but are always ready to fault others
  4. my guys are coated. The 2 in question took 4 hrs pre groom/trim & 5/6 hrs show bath/dry & no i didnt retire in any hurry
  5. 5 yrs i wouldnt bother, some breeders may have retired by then or the stock you like now you may hate then. Join the berners clubs that are around .head to shows or make a trip to a berner shows.
  6. I will agree to disagree. There are people who whinge at the drop of the hat I am not a fan of the poor me person & this applies at shows, shops or any place. This is a competition & everyone nows competition brings out the best & worse of people,if you chose to compete then you are well aware that all sorts will be there whether it be the good, bad, suck ups ,try hards or softies. \
  7. That is the difference with the US/canadian show world, they do congratulate & it would be rude not too, here its always rude to congratulate
  8. http://britmorschnauzers.com/ears.html This page has photos of varying ear sets in mini schnauzers ,aslo hound ears & the likes
  9. the implant can shrinks there testes & no i didnt take what you said out of content. I have 4 entire males living inside & have no issues .They also live outside & in the kennels if the situation arises. We also have girls in heat around the house, they now better than to pee irrespective. Your setting is becoming habit ,i doubt removing the odour will matter as its the object that has more value the "setting". Buy a belly band for the house. If behavioural cojnsider wher he fits in your group of dogs
  10. all our older dogs rehomed have maintained there names, some of the younger have chnaged. i dont have that much of an issue but we do explain to the owners that if they decide to change the name they must ensure the dog learns it sooner than latter especialliy if for any reason it was offleash & bolted . If something unforseen happens & the name change is is still early to use the old one for a response. Some people give weird names so no biggy in changing although we do suggest something similiar in sound if possible This is solely in the case of a dog that has its name known, rescues & the likes obviously adapt well
  11. We dont allow marking on walks & as your making it acceptable behaviour. Walks for us arent about peeing & if it is a toilet break walk at shows the they are told the word . Agree entire or not doesnt make alot of difference but it all comes down to what you make acceptable. Although i think you may find you have answered your own question "its his man cave"
  12. Ok- so if this is a natural happening, and a common phenomenon... then why not have it as accepted in the show ring? Because it happens a dime a dozen & isnt natural. We are talking about great danes, dobes, schnauzers & the list goes on.If there ears stood upright what would you think?? Ears set/shapes are clearly listed in the standard & thats what you breed too but some breeds have more technical ears. For example i would gather in Shelties/Borders & the likes with the introduction of DNA testing that you would have them selected dogs of clear parentage to breed with & this sometimes means having to loss some qualilities toe gain in other areas & then come back when all is good. We used US based dogs in our breeding programme & we where lucky & didnt get erect ears BUT we got big hound ears .We now when we introduve new lines from varoius countries the pitfalls that can happen but to continue with healthly lines that improve you have to hold your breath & hope you dont pick up some visual apsects
  13. In our breed we dont even bother with ears that arent right from 6/8 weeks. To glue /tape an ear for us it means the ear cartilage is correct & the folds are set right we are just making sure during teething the muscles dont become strong in the up right position which it can do . In many breed where imports have arrived for countries that crop you end up with all sorts of weird ear sets . Some will say why use those dogs & the answer is you have to go out & use different lines & sometimes those lines bring issues you may never have had before but you gain something better or clear instead. You will see breeds like dobes.schnauzers & the likes with big hound ears especially from US/euro parentage because ears arent imporant when cropped although in minis they are breeding natural ears in the US so it makes life much easier. Many will try & tape ears that simply will never come good & i wouldnt bother . Greyhounds it can be an issue & for example many racing breeders dont breed for ear set or they lovely rose bud ears, you introduce some of those in your lines & you will end up with funny ears. We never had to tape our greys ears & was lucky to have lines with exceptional ear sets but the gene pool is small in OZ & if you had a nice dog would attempt to tape

    Feed

many breeders give cheese & eggs. That isnt an issue at all. If you have issues you must discuss it with the breeder who knows the breed & the foods that suit..Many breeders will void there guarantees if the diet is changed without talking about it If you feel the diet suggested isnt good then maybe you need to think why your purchasing a pup from them??
  15. Agree dont get involved in Chinese whispers unless you have first hand knowledge. If the people who saw it have an issue let them do the dirty work not you.
  16. What we say to people is how keen do you think you are?? Is there a chance in 6 months showing may not be your thing?? depending on events shade is a must or protection from weather but how much you wish to spend at present can truly vary on how dedicated you plan to be. A cheap beach umbrella can be handy until your happy with spending big. Trolleys are a godsend BUT again not a must have item straight away
  17. have you seen the dog & its coat quality?? If you are trimming it & it hasnt been done before & your not offay with thinners i wouldnt be doing a full groom in one hit. If the owners want it to look good & it hasnt been done you need to do alot of pre show grooming to get it to look nice & natural unless your very confident with stripping, thinning & the likes & i wouldnt do it the day before.
  18. I called them last year to enquiry about freezing semen for Frozen Puppies. Their collection and freezing fee wat VERY high plus I was asked to pick up my own dry ice for the freezing of the seemen and bring it in a couple of eskies Sorry but that doesn't give me a lot of confidence as to the quality of their service and how secure my semen storage would be. The people i now all left Applecross & railway av
  19. As a groomer just make sure you brush your dog if using that style of coat. With a coated breed it will matt so you must remove if often & brush through
  20. Ask your breeder ,ask other exhibitors or even people in other breed who are good groomers. It isnt hard BUT the more regular you do it the easier it is & you have the line to follow.if you let it get woolly & overgrown it becomes hard work if your not sure
  21. We have glued but o be honest we have never bothered with a dog whose ear set is bad to start with, depending on how the folds & cartiledge sits really depends on how successful it may be. With pups who have just gone off during teething we have had great resukts but if the ears where bad from day 1 we didnt even bother
  22. There is no set rule fro grooming . In goldies some do very little, some do the basics & others trim . The main key is it must be done regular . It amzes me how many butchered goldie necks i see at shows & it is very obvious it was done the day before. Trimming should look well blended & like it was never done
