I dont think the vet is an idiot at all. If you want to be a breeder then you should now what requirements are for the breed not the vet.If they didnt have the knowledge to now that then its time to read up,it would be clearly stated on the lab club of QLD or the likes websites, its on the ANKC site & would be on the CCCQ site Expensive mistake for the owner & a lesson learnt about becoming a breeder & finding at things first.

Erny i think you made your point very clearly with "just in case". We see many a dog who in all reality have been prescribed the just in case & i think its very obvious that just in case means exactly that compared to a necessity. For example we get many dogs come in with pred to stop itches, many (not all) off these same dogs come in with treats that are & would not be something an issue dog should be getting. We find when you ask some of these people what options they have tried its hil & the vet hasnt even asked about the diet or similiar but prescribed meds. I do believe there handed out to easily without a second thought but a some vets. Meds have there place & should be used especially if its in the dogs best case BUT there not always the answer . But flame me now I do believe for a small grp of owners who dont want to put themselves out or change diets or the likes its a simple quick fix for them when the dogs issues could be resovled. We have had a number of clients board there dogs for 4/6 weeks on a trial to see how they did without there meds(vets approval) & all had no issues, some with the seasonal itch would also board as they found it cheaper than vet bills. BUT you do have dogs where there is no choice & quality is of the upmost importance

From a kennel owner point of view i will say this. Many people have no idea what meds there do has been prescribe, what there for, what there suppose to do & what are the side effects & why those where the chosen meds. I believe there is a higher percentage of "just in case". We are very particular about meds & want to now the why/what fors etc etc & are they really necessary .what alternatives .

Is not Yogis main handler BUT he has handled the dog on many occasions.

Your breeder is the one who you should be seeking advice from. If they sold you a male for stud work they are the ones who bets now there lines & what there faults & weakness are . You need to now your own dogs faults aswell You need to get the health tests done hips/elbows etc etc & ensure he has good dentition & above all is worthy of being used at stud.just because they where sold as suitable doesnt mean they are. Basically you need to understand what your dog has to offer the breed & why people would wish to use him especially as your in NT. Also be aware that at present the Am Staff people are about to fight some new legal aspects in QLD that could affect the breed nationally for the worse

Muffin you are still better to get them clipped through winter, they dont have to be done as short but will be done at a length that is easy to maintain for the weather. If you have trouble keeping control of the coats then better to get a winter cut

Well known for kids to do this,we had a spat of visiting monsters doing it & its habit to always check connections. Still report it to VCA & even inform your dog news/ringleader reps so they can stick in there articles & the VCA journal

depends what gundog breeds your interested in,most are actually more sedate under 12 months & its the 12 months & over that people fall short of giving them the right amount of mental stimulation. I have large breed gundogs & fined all mine under 12 months are easy to deal with & whilst we live on an acre they dont use alot of it. We lived in the burbs & also found the same but after 12 months was when they needed to be mentally challeneged & given the time to have fun so it really comes down to the chosen breeds & how keen you are to do the full routine for the next 10 yrs

Clipping My Keeshond Due To Infection
Dogsfevr replied to ~mer~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It wont help but all it will do is make it easier. We have clipped a number of Keeshonds off but they where elder dogs whose time had come to enjoy minimal brushing. Honestly if you can put up with it i would do so,it would want to be a very bad infection to warrant clipping the coat & remember the coat your dog has is its age Not a fan of malasab but many vets suggest it . Is it infections or little hot spots?? -

Finding It Hard To Find The "one"
Dogsfevr replied to italmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Um i would suggest giving the breeder more credit for knowing there dog & what they see. In all the years of rehoming older dogs we have never had this done & never had an issue with matching the right dog. We dont send dogs home on the first visit either, the first visit here is for all parties to meet & greet & if it is doable then they go home & think about it after been informed of all that was seen & what we feel would be the best option. -

i agree with lilli ,we too wouldnt allow any strangers to do that to our dogs & if someone turned up with a list wanting to do that we would stop there. Dont know about other breeders, but I wouldn't let a visiting home do that. One, bcz I dont know how the visiting home will react and two, I dont want to be reinforcing any not so good ideas in my pups' head. I dont think the average home can go about temp testing, bcz they wont really be looking at everything anyway and no way would most breeders let mr/ms public try out a new idea (such as the temp test above) with their pup i agree with lilli ,we too wouldnt allow any strangers to do that to our dogs & if someone turned up with a list wanting to do that we would stop there. The children dont need to call the dog as the dog is going show signs very quickly how it responds to strangers. The breeders ii now all follow the same method where everyone calmly sits down & the dog is allowed to interact. Questions are asked & attention is paid to how things are progressing & we will talk further & point out things that need to be known with they way the interaction is going or not going. -
all our pet owners blow dry there dogs per or instructions on grooming, the gereater number of our clients who bath between grooms blow dry there dogs especially in winter

Breed Suggestions For A Child/teenage Owner
Dogsfevr replied to Jodi1981's topic in General Dog Discussion
can you have 3 dogs in your council??? Many councils have dog limits so something to keep in mind. There are so many breeds that would be suitable. I would suggest going to some dogs shows & having a look, Out of interest what breeds does she like(even if there not suitable ) Will the dog be inside/outside?? Do you want a breed that comes with grooming expenses or easy care What is she hoping for this dog(cuddly/walking/not much walking/fetching/retrieving balls etc etc. How much coat brushing would she realistically want to do
