  1. You need to go back to basics and teach self control and re establish yourself as being the high value treat . I would start with walking out the front door establishing the expectations of out the door privileges. I would seriously consider getting one on one help now than going it alone or joining a good obedience class. Look into body awareness videos which teaches handler and dog to work as a team whilst stimulating the brain and easy to set up in the backyard . Sit out the front and reward calm self control behaviour . Out of curiosity did you do puppy school,I often see the low value in humans higher value in other dogs from puppy classes focusing on free for all behaviour and not life skills behaviour .
  2. There is no set price so phone breeders . Dont rush ,find a breeder who has stable natures to start off with . Make sure your prepared to keep the nature and unless looking at a smooth coat please teach it to love grooming . We are one off the many groomers who refuse to groom Chows unless we have meet it or referred by a trusting person , Sadly far too many are grooming aggressive and go to groomers in terrible condition. The last Chow we did took 2 off us 4 hrs to clip off
  3. Not a terrier but easy wire coat Petit Basset Griffen Vendeen or Bretagne . The PBGV are great family dogs and enjoy being real in the woods
  4. I have friends who do competitive tracking and lure coursing with there Borders and are great . We have boarded a few and they are delightful dogs very much under estimated. They certainly have there “why should I streak” which is something to factor but as a pet there great little dogs . I was going to suggest Irish Terrier again a fabulous pet but note long legs aren’t your thing .They would be great for bushwalking, cycling
  5. You used the word ethical multiple times on doing the right thing .The public that read these posts suddenly jump on the band wagon off believing a little bit that people selectively post instead off giving an answer that is educational covers many ethical choices and tough decisions on what is right, what is wrong and offers the best whole picture going forward . Your bold bit is nothing to the rest off your post ,obviously you don’t like clarification ,not my problem .
  6. A good rep vet can tell if a bitch will likely struggle to birth natural . But here’s the deal which evils would you prioritise. #Bitch may not whelp natural #Bitch may not whelp natural but health clearances are stellar and just as important for the bred going forward and pet owners. #Bitch will whelp natural but health clearances are average so pet owner gets a potential time bomb to love . #Bitch will whelp naturally but does not represent the breed in correct nature. #Use average stud dog because he’s friendly . # Use a stud dog with great/clear health tests and produces great natures but is slightly nearly during matings . These are the real questions breeders look at ,in the perfect world they would just get on with it . The problem with these topics and people who get vocal also dont factor anything Some would prefer a natural whelp but who cares about other factors. Luckily good breeders don’t just think that way because bringing dogs into this world happy and healthy relies on many factors with tough choices made .
  7. It often makes wonder if the same thought is placed on females who use ivf .
  8. Will proudly put my hand up and say we do AI and have on 2 occasions opted for elective . My business ,my choice based on the factors that where more important at that moment .Factors can vary from long weekend ,size off the litter ,extreme heatwave and added risk to the bitch based on vet discussions and weighing up the pros and cons . C section is not a convenient cheap choice and a successful c section is based on a good vet practice. There are also issues that can occur with a csection that certainly doesn’t mean easy afterwards . But elective has its place As for AI if you bring a nasty arse bitch for a mating to my dog then you get an AI.Yes some bitches turn into moles . A friend had to retire there top winning bitch after a male bite her ear during mating and it flopped . Dog was stunning, great health, asset to the gene pool but a PIA when mating and had a history off doing this . Owner would have preferred AI had she known. AI is not the end off the world . AI is often better for the bitch stuck underneath especially if the male won’t turn ,would sooner Ai than use a breeding hitch to just get natural hold the bitch in place . Matings here are done with the animals best interest not a human emotion off silliness . Our last 2 litters where standing AI ,quick, simple and successful .
  9. The only experience I can give was removing the glaucoma eye was the best outcome ever.
  10. Its a human tablet for wind ,we use it on the big dogs in stress scenerios for bloat but wouldnt give it to a pup . For puppies we use something for babies ,luke warm baths but yes the vet asap would be better
  11. I have a dog riddled with cancer & other nasties ,we have opted for no further testing ,no poking & prodding or sitting at the vets on his own in his senior years . He is on low dose pain meds & we are just going with quality which our vet is very supportive off . We cant save him so doing "further" is not an option ,he is enjoying each day which is his normal .
  12. How have the pups been raised, what have they been exposed too. What are you expecting from the dog in general life , Are you wanting busy brain, laid back,outside/inside . From a boarding kennels owner we find Cattle dogs an issue especially poorly raised ones . What is ACD crossed with Kelpies have all been a joy but neither off your choices are pure
  13. I don’t like to sugar coat things . If you fell the dog is the wrong fit please rehome smartly sooner than later . At 8 months the dog can be retrained with the right people , I don’t think it’s the wrong breed any dog can do this when an owner is not confident around dogs . It doesn’t mean this dog is dominant it maybe reacting to your lack off confidence and it not knowing where it fits and how it’s meant to behave / react
  14. Regarding this as a groomer we do dogs that where perfect toy fine and then flip a switch to hating it with no man handling . Often owners have tried themselves . Dogs with Thyroid issues are known for hating there nails being done . Dogs in pain . Nails is a tricky thing and oh how I wish every dog loved them being done
  15. Just google animal transporters plenty will come up but importing even from NZ is not cheap . But you can try Only Imports KCR Mooreholme Baycity pet transport Total Animal Logistics there are others
  16. I commented because how high is too high, how long is too long to lift a puppy off the ground by its collar . The method mentioned was inappropriate and you can’t compare apples with oranges even in neck structure and strength. It wasn’t good advice
  17. Big difference between conditioning a dog to collar holding & what you suggested for discipline which was Lift it up & say no .Personally something i would never dream off doing lifting a dog up by the collar to say no & certainly not on a breed or individual dog with a soft neck . As your Malinios showed signs off aggression i gather it was working lines & would have been trained doing bite work from 8 weeks like many are in that breed . I would also doubt service dogs are disciplined in that manner by forcibly lifting them up ?? Service dogs are taught to accept & be rewarded by owners using the harness to assist with daily chores rarely the use off pulling a collar around the throat. And if catching a dog by a collar that hasn't been taught to be collar held but jumped straight to discipline than its not going to be any help either .
  18. All the clients here whose dogs we groom get a needle test done, slides checked and outcome based on that ,simple and easy . Unless the lump feels attached or odd looking then start simple
  19. Not surprising he does the nipping being brushed but something you need to start being more in control off .Your puppy should not be nipping even at that age whilst being brushed . Walking wise puppy can walk out the front onleash ,we walk our puppies for lead training pre homing out the front from 6 weeks . Seeing the world, seeing cars ,hearing noises is a must . Most vets explain it wrong there. Grooming wise find a groomer early who will get the pup into a good routine early . As a groomer most leave it till 6 months and bring a nippy ,untrained pup for there groom . Where do you brush the pup .It doesn’t get to tell you what it wants ,brushing is fir life let it take control now and you will have an unpleasant 12 odd years ahead . We tell our puppy owners to buy a non slip matt, place on washing machine or bench and brushing/touch time / feet, eyes, ear checks happen there . Most people brush on the lounge, there lap or flip them upside down.
  20. First off you need to address what the humans are doing and before you say nothing you all need to accept there is 2 parts here . often the behaviour is cute for a few days ,human starts something puppy gets over stimulated humans decide puppy is naughty and needs stopping . puppy pens are a great tool but not for punishment or being told off whilst being placed in it especially if the humans have joint responsibility in creating the end result. Puppy pens are great for puppy time out, calm time, sleep time and learning to be on it’s on time . It has its chew toys in there to enable it to have fun and just settle without the drama and reactions off humans often fluffing about adding to the pups reaction . So what the pup needs to learn is self control, this happens during calmtouch time, calm brush time and just sitting calmly. Pups learns reward on being taught the right behaviour. When most people pat dogs they insist on doing so at the top off the head pup gets mouthy human pulls hand away and tries again and pup responds again ,human created reward . Start teaching tricks ,direct puppy to simple tricks to use its brain, spin, walk backwards so many options off breaking that moment and creating a listening aspect instead . Humans need to learn to stop flapping hands or allowing the “ oh it’s cute moment” . Pup sounds like it’s enjoying the game but has no idea it’s not a game . So what activities do you do with pup training wise, how is brushing and combing going, lead training
  21. My advice is you do have to make decisions with your head not your heart, your dog deserves that . The decision either way is the right answer for that dog in question . The dog we had whose eye was removed & he also had vision issues in the other eye ,he enjoyed 3 more years off quality life . Do all dogs cope no which is why only you know your dog . The eye removal will remove the pain that will be affecting the dog more than anything else . With our boy we opted for the treatment path but in hindsight we should have removed the eye sooner ,we have no regrets in the path we chose BUT have a new thought process if it ever happens again . He was a different dog withing 24 hrs pain wise . At present your dog is both eyed vision impaired so this is a trial run ,the difference is the eye at present will be causing discomfort . So if you opt for eye removal don't under estimate the dogs ability to cope & if you do then you need to put your adult pants on to set the dog up for success ,you cant bring it home & feel guilty & do everything ,this is where making the right decision factors . Our boy still walked around an acre ,had his wobbles but we allowed him independence,we set up his mud map for water & life must haves. If going out he was in a puppy pen or his kennel run where we new he was safe from weather issues as our dogs have 24/7 access to the doggy door ,we had to adapt to certain things to ensure his safety but 95% lived a fully functional life until his smell & hearing went then he struggled as he had no senses left to assist in his ability to life happily
  22. Ulcers are distressing too dogs irrespective,If you feel it’s the drops phone the vet,the dog may also be reacting too you holding the eye area to place the drops or cream in so you need to also consider that . Tricin is great but no one can tell you what option without knowing what stage the ulcer is at ,your vet is your go to person or a referral to an eye specialist
  23. Her breeder should be able to assist with all this info as they have offered a mains registered pup to her . There a very few hoops to jump through BUT enough hoops to make people more accountable for wanting to become a breeder & learning to read the rules & regs instead off mating 2 dogs & bingo puppies . Its not hard if your truly keen & interested
