What Will Your Dog Work For?
lilyandjazz replied to MrsD's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Lily loves bbq chicken. Daisy is a hoover so anything in food form works with her. -
Thanks everyone, for your informative tips. Will put these into practice and hopefully have some good results.

Hi, I agree with kelpies not liking to be dealt with in a harsh matter, she is very sensitive to that kind of behaviour. Yes, ebby is show bred out of 2 australian champions. My brother has the pick of the litter and she is brillant, which is even more frustrating to me as ella is always beautifully behaved and has never jumped even as a pup. I have spoken to the breeder at a couple of shows and she said she is the spitting image of her mothers behaviour and unfortunately that her jumping is a constant battle. She has been doing agility for a number of years and really enjoys it, she does not jump at me when we are at agility. The times when she jumps is when she is really excited ie. going in the car or playing with the ball. I request her to sit or drop at all these times. Which works until you take to move forward with her. She has brief moments of brillance, which keep you going with her and you see the dog she can be.

Thanks. Will give it a go.

That's what I was told about my GSPs too . Not very encouraging. Bruno jumped on my back as well . If getting her to sit doesn't help I would try a few corrections. Things I have used successfully are water squirters, saying "no" or "ah ah" in a low voice. Blocking with my knee. Withholding attention. Also, grabbing the dog by the collar and holding them still while growling loudly helps. Have you tried any of these? BP I have tried blocking with my knees, very low voice, holding her attention and growling at her. As soon as i try all these things she stops and is fine. The waterspray seems like a good idea, will try that. It is basically like you need to re-enforce her every 1 minute or so, because she forgots what she has learnt, so it can become very frustrating as i feel like i have been re-enforcing her for the last 5 yrs, to no effect. At the moment, i feel all enforced out with her. That is why i thought i would get some new suggestions. Thanks

Hi, I have a 5 yr old kelpie who from the time i got her at 12 weeks, has been a jumper. She also has an extremely short attention span. When she is in full excitement mode ie. off lead park or going in the car it looks like she in a pogo stick. She has done years of obedience and never tries to jump whilst she is on lead. I have tried turning my back to her whenever she jumps, she just jumps up at my back, I have tried ignoring her and other different obedience work. If i speak to her she sits straight away. But after 5 yrs and for the 10 billionth time saying "Ebby sit" i am at a loss as to how to stop this behaviour. It was suggested by another lady i show with that kelpies jump and basically there is nothing you can do about it. Hopefully someone will have some helpful tips for me. Thanks in advance.

I agree with the others be tough, the more you pander to him the worse he is going to get, don't worry he will still love you. You are not doing anything wrong re: collar. I think he probably testing you to see how much he can get away with, Good luck and stay strong

I think it is just one of those things, i have 13 mth and 11 mth shetland sheepdogs. The 11 mth sheltie never has an accident but the 13 mth does for some reason have a fasination every couple of weeks of having an accident on our rumpus room lounge (leather at least so wipeable) if someone has left a towel or sheet on it. I have a feeling that her breeder, was using a box with a sheet when she was a pup and since she had her till 16 weeks, it was already a bit of a habit once i got her. She knows it is wrong because if i catch her she is extremely remorseful but i think she sometimes regresses. I just have to remember not to leave anything on the lounge. Good luck

Hi, Lily my 1 yr old sheltie has an innie, she has never had any infections or problems with it. The breeder where i bought her from said her mum has one and she has had 3 litters naturally without any dramas.

Flea Treatment Which Works
lilyandjazz replied to lilyandjazz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes it is, didnt realise it was a Fido as that was not on the bottle. -
Hi, I have been on the search for a flea treatment which works on my shelties. One of my girls is highly allergic to fleas and i couldn't stand to watch her be so irritated and miserable, no matter what products i had used eg. flea shampoo, frontline plus, capstar tablets as well as brushing and removing fleas about twice a day. I went to our local produce store today and there was a bulldog puppy covered in fleas. The guy at the feed shop suggested "Fleatrol Plus Spray" it contains the following active constituents: 4.og/L (RS)-Methoprene 1.8g/L Pyrethrins 6.og/L N-octyl bicycloheptene dicarboximide 3.6g/L Piperonyl Butoxide The fleas just died and were falling off this puppy immediately. That was good enough for me so i bought a bottle, it is 500ml in a spray bottle and was $26. Did my girls this morning and they have not scratched all morning plus the redness of lily's skin has nearly all gone. Plus it actually smells nice. Hopefully this will help other people with their war against fleas.

Hi, I have never heard about yeast. I have shetland sheepdogs and i think the "oakwood" brand of dog shampoo is the best. They have a website or you can buy it at most pet shops/produce stores. The shine in the coat usually comes from the dogs health anyway and a good diet, so as long as your dog is healthy it should have a shiny coat no matter what you use.

Hi, I have a kelpie who has severe thunderstorm/fireworks anxiety. It has been suggested to me that i give her 500 Valerian on new years eve to help calm her down. I have done some research, but it all relates to people not dogs. Has anyone used these tablets before and do they have any side effects ? Thanks Mel

Hi, Looking for some suggestions on boasting appetite of a 1 yr old female sheltie. She is 15 inches and currently weighs about 7.5 kg. She is the long and slender type of sheltie. She is not very food orientated, the only thing she goes crazy for is bbq chicken, not sure if that is something she should be eating everyday. She is currently on hills science biscuits for adult dogs and is having the recommended amount. Can anyone suggest what to add, thought may be some chicken mince to her food to bulk her up or an appetite booster. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks Mel

Hi, She is already booked into the vet, was concerned may be a brain tumour, due to change. I don't think exercise is the problem as she goes to a (fenced in) off lead park basically every day. Basic training isnt a problem when she is not worried. She basically blanks out and the only thing she can focus on is getting away and will basically move anything, crash into anything or go through anything. I have even tried to move her head so she makes eye contact with me and she fights too look away and she is basically off her head and does not know what she is doing. I have even tried with my brother as she really responds to him and he can't even get her to focus.

Hi, I know it sounds ridicilous that training is not an option (as training is one of the most important things for a dog) She is obedidence trained and when not worried is fantastic....wish i could video link what she is like...then you would have a letter idea. She gets into such a state her eyes basically roll back in her head, she is unable to focus, he only thought is getting somewhere dark, she pants constantly so much that i am concerned she may have a heart attack or a stroke, once the storm is finished it usually takes a good period of time for her to respond to me again once she has calmed down. For eg. In last nights storm i had her on lead in by lounge room to try and get her to calm down.... she was in such a state to get away so nearly pulled me over....i am not a weakling, so that is a pretty mean feat. In relation to getting out of yard , she can move 2 big concrete pots filled with stones and dirt which takes my mum and i alot of time to move and then move a drain grate which in underneath the gate. There have been no changes to her routine in the past 6 weeks so not sure why her anxiety has increased so dramatically. Do you have any suggestions re: controlling the fear i am basically at my wits end, am concerned she is going to hurt herself.

Hi, I own a 5yr old kelpie (she is show bred, so does not have any working instincts) female who is desexed. I have owned Ebby since she was 8 weeks old, she has always been highly strung around fireworks and thunderstorms, the rest of the time she is extremely outgoing. The fear she has at these times cannot be trained out of her, it is her nature. She gets walked 3 times a week and also goes to the off lead park most days of the week for a run. I have noticed a big change in her overall personality in the past 6 weeks, beginning with her trying to escape from my yard a handful of times, when she does get out all she does is run and will not respond to being called. She has had a few close calls but has lucky come back to me not hurt. It has come to the point where i am unable to leave her outside without being supervised or she tries to escape. The only place she seems happy is either under the bed or in a walkin wardrobe with no windows. It is almost like she is afraid of not just the storms and fireworks, but any raised voices or loud noises now. I am taking her to the vet as i feel she may need some form of full time medication as her quality of life is poor. Can anyone let me know experiences they have had with medications ? or similar situations. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mel
