It was actually a kelpie that has since passed but for close to 5 years we worked with her, others worked with her and it just got to the point where there was no other option. We have 3 shelties at home and none of them are debarked, their barking can be managed. It was the right decision for the kelpie and she had a much happier life after she was debarked.

I am so glad it has worked for you. I have had to have it done for one of my dogs previously, best decision ever. The dog, neighbours and I could all relax and if she did bark when the bird flies over or kids playing next door etc it means she can do what she wants and is alot happier. Dont feel guilty about your decision, people who often comment have never had to deal with a dog that nothing works for and the stress involved in remedying the problem, they just assume u are not training, not seeking advice from behaviourists or just generally lazy. I would never hesitate again in getting a dog done, if all other avenues had been tried. Hopefully everyone can see the difference it has made in your life and the life of your dog and how improved it is.

Unfortunately u are not going to like this post either but, sounds like u really need to discuss this with your wife...as seems a bit like u cant do this....so i am not going to let u do this. You dont seem like u are on the same page. Doesnt sounds like a great atmosphere for a dog. Hope u consider this before purchasing any animal for your family. There are alot of really informed people on the forum giving advice who own the breed and are only trying to help u, may be u need to consider that a SBT is not the breed for u or your family.

Hi, Good luck with your puppy. We feed the girls advance sensitive and they seem to go pretty well on it and lily's skin has improved and also her coat.

Hi, The breeder we got the girls from uses.....caster oil and the white pounder cant think of the name at the moment but (the stuff they used to use for the old tennis lines). She got it from the hardware shop. Works really well and also does not pull out the hair and if you want to remove it you just rub the ear with your fingers it cracks and comes off really easily. Good luck it is a very trying time.

Your puppy is beautiful. I also dont go near kellyville pets. I dont like what they stand for....i also think they charge like a wounded bull. Plenty of other shops ie. Petcare 2000, petbarn or petstock at castle hill/bella vista. Any puppy school you go to should be checking vaccination records. I always took mine to Castle Hill showground for obedience and puppy schools. Below details are from dogs nsw site. Hills Dist Kennel & Training Club Inc 02 9871 5734 Vicki Gresner Monday 7.00pm "Castle Hill Showground, Castle Hill" . Good luck with your puppy.

At this stage i would not be concerned about giving her the treats as rewards. She has only just started training and it is a good tool to use until she fully understands the commands you are giving her.

Congrats on your new puppy. You have now reached the stage that your puppy is comfortable with you and their surroundings. They will now start to test their barriers of how far they can push you. If the dog is doing this i would place the dog on lead so that it cannot jump on you and give a stern no or whatever word you want to use when this behaviour occurrs. I would also in future when you play with the puppy and it does bite your hand etc when playing use the same word, so the dog understands that they have hurt you. If you do this consistently your problem should be solved. Remember your puppy is only 12 weeks old and for the next few months you are going to have alot of little trials like these. Remember you are the leader not the puppy. I would also enroll in a puppy preschool class because they will be able to help you greatly over the next weeks/months when all these different things pop up. Good luck

Increasing Coat On A Sheltie
lilyandjazz replied to lilyandjazz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
She is currently on advance adult food as far as food goes. She is about 14 inches and weights about 7kg. She is quite well covered she could even stand to lose a small amount. She has feathers and stomach hair i think it looks less because it is not thick. She gets brushed about every 2 days with a pin brush and we have also invested in a pearce (not sure how spelt) brush. She doesnt lose much coat when being brushed. Thanks -
Increasing Coat On A Sheltie
lilyandjazz replied to lilyandjazz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes both her parents are well coated and the brother in the litter has a massive coat and he went to a pet home. I have a sister from a previous litter and she has quite a good coat as well. She may even be a late maturer. Thanks for the help -
Hi, I have a lovely 10 month sheltie bitch and just can't get a good coat on her. Not sure what other breeders do but it seems in the shows i go in with her the other bitches have these massive coats and they are all around her age. She has had her first season and seems to be getting her adult coat. I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions in relation to increasing the length and bulkiness of a her coat. Her coat is lovely and shiny and she have quite a good amount of undercoat. Just can't seem to get to the next level with it and unfortunately most judges like their shelties with alot of coat so any help would be great. Thanks in advance

I have just gone through this stage with Jazz. I am no expert but this is what worked for me. I found putting her in a crate when people came over or whenever i thought her behaviour was not acceptable. I got everyone to ignore her and she was only allowed out of the crate when she was settled and listening (boy..... did she have some temper tantrums, nearlly rocked the crate over when no one was paying attention to her and crying) but we did not acknowledge her. I found even if you were chastising her it was a reward as she had your attention. I would also suggest a short lead ie. not giving any length. Now she is at the stage where the crate is not a punishment, she actually finds it a happy place to be. Good luck you will get there.

I definately agree, it was the best decision for the dog and everyone involved....she was then able to play and bark whenever she wanted it really increased the quality of her life.

Before i got my sheltie pup from the breeder she had a urinary tract infection. May be just keep an eye on her for the next few days.

I agree, I think by the time the 3rd vaccination has been done you lose that window with socialising and noise. I have shelties who are quite standoffish so i get them out as soon as possible. Also the other puppies at training will all have had the same vaccinations, so you are not bringing your puppy into contact with dogs who have not been vaccinated. I would go if i was you. Good luck

My only suggestion would be to have experienced owner classes and first time owner classes. All i really got out of the class that i went to was that i was socialising my pup which i did already before attending puppy school. I find first time dog owners very trying and their questions would take up the whole class and very little training would be done. I also had a little problem as the instructor of the class that i went to did not really understand that my puppy was a show dog and the pup i have is a natural sitter so i was not emphasing sit with her and in the ring the dogs are required to stand not sit. I don't think i would ever go to another puppy pre school i thought it was a waste of time unfortunately. But on the other hand if you are a fist time dog owner i think they really get alot of the class

I have 2 desexed bitches and 3 non-desexed bitches and they never have a cross word between them. 3 Shelties, 1 kelpie and 1 cattle dog. They can all be run freely together without any fights breaking out. I think if you introduce and monitor their behaviour and don't let situations get out of hand you should not have any dramas, there is no reason they can't all live together peacefully.

Are Some Dogs More Likely To Be Attacked?
lilyandjazz replied to dougal's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I agree stay away from the off leash dog parks....i have learnt my lesson also, just because you have a well trained dog doesn't mean that the majority of the park do. Often the dogs you find at the off leash park are the ones that the owner can't walk on the lead. May be try and get some friends with quiet dogs to ease her back in, good luck. -
I have 3 pure bred bitches: A kelpie who is around 15 inches and two sheltie bitches one who is 15 inches the other who is 13 inches Who knows what happens in relation to size as long as they are happy and healthy i wouldn't really worry just remember good things come in small packages.

Hi, I have a 7 yr old kelpie who still loves to dig. I went to bunnings and invested in some $12.00 concrete squares and have not had a problem since. Good luck

I am feeding advance senstive skin at the moment. She does not seem to be getting an upset stomach and her allegeries have improved greatly, from what i can remember i think it is tuna based. Good luck
