Herding Starters Day
fidelis Border Collies replied to herding_guy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
i have read this thread with concerned and after many private emails i have started a new thread http://forums.dogzonline.com.au/index.php?showtopic=48296 TRacey -
I have reinstated my orginal post as i can see we are getting back on track and not getting bogged down with insults. I wont try and justify why i posted this thread because it doesn't matter what i write some people will think i am targetting them so i wont bother. I posted this because it is important to me and i will stand by what i have said. I have started a new thread as i don't want this to get lost in the other threads but i am very concerned about where this is going. I have read some of the posts some various people and I am very concerned in regards to Not sure if these people have read the rules about what breeds are allowed to participate in ANKC herding events Breeds eligible for Herding Program. Australian Cattledog Australian Kelpie Australian Shepherd Australian Stumpy Tail Cattledog Bearded Collie Belgium Shepherds [All Varieties] Border Collie Bouvier des Flanders Briard Collie Rough and Smooth German Shepherd Dog Finnish Lapphund Norwegian Buhund Old English Sheepdog Polish Lowland Sheepdog Puli Pumi Shetland Sheepdog Swedish Vallhund Welsh Corgi Cardigan Welsh Corgi Pembroke Other Herding Breeds Bernese Mountain Dog Canaan Dog Keeshond Kerry Blue Terrier Norwegian Elkhound Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Tibetan Terrier Standard Schnauzer Giant Schnauzer MIXED BREEDS mixed breeds may be accepted provided they are a mix or apparent mix of herding breeds. These must be Associate Registered Dogs effective Jan 2005 55 Rules & Regulations for Herding Please note what it says about Mixed breeds TWO APPARENT MIX OF HERDING BREEDS A Staffie/Kelpie cross is not a mix of two apparent herding breeds and a Pitbull is diffinetly not. And I am not saying these particular dogs i see in these posts are a danger to the stock etc etc, but rules are in place for a reason. ANKC Herding is a very new sport and it just takes something like one of these breeds which are known for not letting go to grab a sheep pull it down and at the worse kill it, then where will we be. The pitbull, staffie breeds are known for their grip and the powers to hold on. I have read this thread with concern the more people talk about it and pat each other on the back and tell each other what a great day is was etc more people read it then some one thinks oh sounds fun i will have a go. Someone will have a go in a non-controlled environment (Unlike the training day at Dave's place ) and who knows what will happen. It just takes one situation for the likes of PETA to be involved and this sport can get closed down. We have rules in place for a reason and yes I know there is no stopping a Border Collie, a Kelpie, Cattle dog or even a Shepherd pulling a sheep down and killing it, and this is something that everyone has a responsibility to avoid. But these breeds are within the rules. The pitbulls, Staffies and Dobermans are not and we have a responsibility to let people know that have these breeds that they are unfortunately not allowed to compete in ANKC Events. I am a Fully licensed ANKC Judge from HIC to Advanced in All courses and if one of these dogs were presented to me to judge I would refuse to judge it because it is not exceptable as per the RULES Anyone that takes on the responsibility of conducting trainings days and trials etc has the responbility to the stock and the sport to inform these people that sorry this breed can't compete. Sorry to Rain on your parade but someone had to say something i have had so many private emails about this tread from concerned people i couldn't not say any thing. Tracey Lamb

Best Sheep For Training
fidelis Border Collies replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
when getting sheep you also have to decide how much training you will do on them as the more you do with the sheep the more dog broke they get and may need changing. If you get the damaras they are lighter and will stay lighter for a long time, but they also flock together well so your dog doesn't learn to gather sheep. Black face sheep tend to be harder on the dogs and may be too hard for a novice dog. Merino's are easier to get cheaper but tend to get heavy quickly, need shearing and are more prone to worms etc. You could maybe get damaras and some geese, Geese graze like sheep but are excellent to train on more more like sheep then ducks and are more hardy. Just my thoughts Tracey -

Thank you to everyone for your kinds words its been over a week now since Murphy left us and boy has she left a whole in our hearts. The Mulberry tree is doing well although the geese have tried to get it and eaten the bottom leaves that were pucking out the top of the gaurd I put around the tree. Every morning when i let the ducks out and water the Mulberry tree I always say Morning Murph. I was watering the tree one day and Dave came up and said you know Murphy didn't like getting wet. Thanks DAVE!!!!!!!! She will be remembers but I do miss her Tracey

Last night we had to make the decision to let Old Murphy go to the rainbow Bridge. I only had the pleasure of knowing Murphy for the last 18 Month and what a Fine Old Lady she was. She was my partner Dave’s dog a New Zealand Huntaway who was retired from work about 5 years ago at the age of 14 years. Murphy was a great asset to Dave in his work doing a variety of jobs e.g. shepherding, Station Manager on huge Sheep stations. Murphy used to train the young pups if one would get out of control and not come when called Murphy was sent out to give the pup a clip around the ear and the pup would quick smart do as it was told. She was attacked by 2 Dingo about 4 months ago and at that stage we didn’t know if she would pull thru but thankfully she did. This past weekend the weather has been extremely hot we are just about to go into a very hot Summer and I think the heat was too much for her. Yesterday Morning we knew things were not good for the old girl as she didn’t want to get out of bed and had not eaten her meal from the night before. Last night when we got home from work you could see in her eyes she had had enough. A kind friend came over and while resting on her bed we said “Goodbye” to her. She is know resting under a newly planted Mulberry Tree which will we watch grow. Only 2 weeks ago we got some lovely photos of her working the sheep and just enjoying life. http://home.iprimus.com.au/fidelis4bcs/Fid...files/frame.htm Murphy Dave and Murphy Murhy asking if she is allowed to bring the sheep in Murphy coming in Photos kindly taken by Jacqui Cant. Murphy turned 19 years old in August of this year she had a very full busy life and I think she went happy. Rest in Peace Murphy Smurf. Murphy says goodbye Bye Murph Tracey

I suggest ant tending breed owners that are interested in herding take a look as it is what these breeds excell at Tracey . -
Wdc Of Qld Herding Trial
fidelis Border Collies replied to wylie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
no i honestly wouldn't like to see the number we had on Saturday but even if we got 20 new dogs a bi monthly and even if 2 kept going to trial would be worth it. I think most people were pretty surprised about their dogs and really hadn't thought that serious about herding till they saw how the dogs went. Tracey -
Wdc Of Qld Herding Trial
fidelis Border Collies replied to wylie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Tass that is the problem most people should start training now for next year and get the dog as far as you can then when the trials come you can go HT, PT Started and so one. Herding is not something you can just pick up when you have a speare moment you have to make a decision to start and continue your training. I train my dogs all over the summer and i hope to be able to 3 sheep trial Abigail next year but she will be ready for Advance by the time the season starts. then once she has her HXAs we can start getting CH Points. Find your self a good trainer and start straight away and by the time the season starts next year you will be a step ahead of everyone else. Tracey -

Cathy We are hoping to maybe hold a few of these next year set up 2 rings and just run HIC Do you think the interest is there and how often do you think it would be worth running one. I am going to suggest bi monthly in conjunction with a show and have a training session first maybe 7-9am then start the trials later what do you think Tracey -

we did have some corgis entered but we run out of time and they were also being shown and it all clashed so we refunded the entry fee. Would be nice to see some Collies, Corgis and Shelties give it a go plus some vulhunds (sp???) etc Tracey -

Wdc Of Qld Herding Trial
fidelis Border Collies replied to wylie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Cathy Yes it turned out bigger then we expected and a few people were not happy about having to wait so long but at that price and the numbers we got i didn't see anyway around it. We never expected so many people and if we do it again will will only be doing HIC's Ducks have always been available but we only started using them this year. The first time was at the Border Collie May herding Trial. Cybil (Aust Ch Fidelis Moonlighting HSAd HIAs) was the first dog in Australia to get a title on Ducks (Although i must admit she prefers sheep and cattle) All the tests are done on Sheep. Ducks can be used on A and B Course, Wouldn't like to see ducks used in the tests as most dogs work too close at this level to be able to work ducks properly. Tracey
