  1. I have a 16w olg Golden Retriever who has had dandruff down around his belly and lower legs (have asked about him in a previous thread). He is having glucosamine, EPO, fish oil and has only been washed once since we have had him, with Aloveen Shampoo and Conditioner (making sure shampoo was well and truly washed out). He is on Ep Holistic Large and Giant breed, LF cottage cheese, youghurt, sardines in water, chicken pet mince and chicken necks and introducing frames. The odd veggie from table scraps (not so much at this time of the year!) His dandruff was clearing when we introduced the EPO in addittion to the fish oil about 2-3 weeks ago (roughly). We saw his breeder 10 days ago who wanted him on Vitamin C as well. We have done that and he is now flaking dandruff from the top of his back, his sides and anywhere else dandruff can come from. His tummy skin is very dry as well and I am not too sure where to go next. Now I don't know if the Vit C has caused it to let rip, he is loosing him puppy coat and the weather has been unbelievably hot but I don't know if any of this would be affecting him. Nothing else has changed at all. Such a beautiful pup, just wish he only left his fur on me rather than fur and dandruff. He is not itchy and it doesn't bother him in the least. He is brushed gently with a slicker brush and he loves to be brushed. This is done daily to remover the fur he is dropping. My other golden has no skin problems so I only have all of you to draw information from. Thanks for anything you can ssuggest....
  2. My 16m golden has two per night in cut open in his dinner and my 13.5w golden (who has dandruff) has two at night and an Evening Primrose in his breakfast. His dandruff is actually getting better now on the EPO? Goodness only knows why, thought the fish oil would do it but no, def. improvement since adding the EPO. ;) My young pups breeder told me to cut them open as the dogs have shorter digestive tract than us and the capsule and oil cannot be absorbed sufficiently before being expelled out the other end. I have no idea if this is true but now cut them open and drizzle the oil over their food.
  3. Have been following this thread, hope today went well. Any news? Hope you have a full recovery really really soon emmark...
  4. Called the suppliers today and pure pine, nothing added so all is good there. Not as much munching today so hopefully as it becomes "old news" there will be no more nibbling..... Loraine - the chips are tiny and not as big as some of the sticks and twigs he has been devouring and in some cases throwing back up. Doing our best to stop his munching of both but unfortunately pups are pups and chewing is something I cant control 24/7. Dies my 16mo golden has a penchant for hard plastic and the odd pieces of jewlery, his stomach and intestine will be a student vets treasure chest when he is donated to science at the end of his lifetime. I don't even want to know what is in there. Funnily he never ate sticks and is not interested in the mulch, give him an ice cream container any time!! Thanks everyone, he is at the vet for shots tomorrow, I'll bring it up with him too.
  5. Yep, I know, stupid question to ask now my backyard is covered We have just spread soft play mulch over the back yard which from all I can google is made from forestry pine chips. It is used for children playgrounds and has to meet Australian Standards. Of course the little 12wo golden retriever thinks this is the best food ever which of course I am stopping. I have googled everything and it looks to be safe (?) poisons wise. Can anyone tell me otherwise? All is fine and dandy when I am there to reprimand him but there's 6 cubic metres for him to munch through whilst I am at work!! ;)
  6. Thanks Erny & Rysup. Sounds like I'll keep going as I am and it should be ok. His diet is great, no signs of mange nor itchiness and no fleas. He is starting to lose his puppy fluff so perhaps he's shedding his skin like a snake too. Thank you both for your replies. I won't worry about it anymore, just keep an eye on it. Thank you for putting me at ease. Appreciate it!
  7. I have a today 12wo Golden who has had dandruff from I am guessing as soon as I got him. I noticed it when brushing, mostly around the belly/back legs. He is cream and pigment is very dark so it is noticeable at brushing time. After brushing he is surrounded by skin flakes. He is eating EP Holistic Large & Giant Breed, chicken pet mince, sards (once or twice per week), youghurt or low fat cottage cheese for breakfast and dinner and 2 chicken necks for lunch. Added to breakfast and dinner is 1/2tsp glucosamine and 1 x 1200mg fish oil. He has had one bath - Aloveen shampoo on Monday, shampoo thouroughly washed out. His tummy looks like that of a wrinkly old man (or what I imagine a wrinkly old man to look like ) SO: I have read all the threads and it looks like he is eating the correct things and taking what he should be and has been since he arrived here. My question is to all those who have had the same type of problem - has it gone away in time? And is there anything I am not doing that I should? I appreciate any further guidance. Thanks...
  8. Here's the new addittion to our family..... Name: Axle Breed :Golden Retriever Age: 8 weeks Brother to Rusty and Diesel AKA the "Harp Seal".....
  9. Mine will titre test but says that it is expensive. He is happy to vaccinate every 3 years too... so we are all happy campers here.
  10. FTPO - you have made a decision and whether others think its right or wrong, no one will disagree with the fact that you are one fantastic dog owner who is trying to do the best for your dog. As you say, you can always go down the other test road in the future. I wish both you and Benson all the best for a quick solution to his itchies and a summer hopefully without any more horriffic hot spots and a slowing to his skin problems. You know how I feel and where I am if you need to chat or need help with anything.
  11. Have been wondering how your pups went. Sorry for to hear about the loss of Rambo Thank goodness Detroit has managed to pull through. I hope she continues getting better and stronger each day.....
  12. Yep chicken and rice was what the vet recommended when Dies went down last. Six small meals per day to start. OMG - the smell of boiled chicken hoping I wont have to do that again in a hurry.... I made it in bulk and froze what wasn't needed in the first day and defrosted over the next week as needed
  13. What a dreadful accident RIP Ripley...... So terribly sad for you indigirl
  14. I use it on both my dogs - no problems here - must taste ok too as they just eat it up as is....
  15. Dies used to do the same thing. We too have a clamshell pool for over summer and during the day whilst at work have 4 heavy ceramic bowls in the backyard during summer in the hope that there will be water there when he needs it. He has slowed down now, but still does the odd dig, especially in his inside water bowl in the bathroom.....because you would!!
  16. Thank you so much Harminee, it is fantastic and done witth an aching body......thank you.... You are a whizz. Much appreciated! ETA - may I be really rude and ask for the Diesel to be moved over or the writing in a slightly more stanoutish colour. I am so sorry to ask - hence my cow avatar! My eyes don't work as well as they used too!! Thankyou
  17. Hi Harminee, I would love it if you were able to make a siggy for me too - I keep putting it off waiting fo the perfect shot but figure being the ordinary photographer I am - it is never going to happen.... Hope I have fgiven you enough to choose from.... His name is Diesel Thank you so much, it is greatly appreciated....
  18. Yes, as Sam&Saki says, dont cuddle him if he cringes, just sit or stand next to him and watch the world go by. It won't take long and soon he'll be fine...
  19. I took my pup up to the busy road and sat on the ground next to him just watching and listening to the cars go by. We'd be there for 10 mins and then move on to the park for some fun.... The next step was going at dusk where the headlights were on, that too was another learning experience. He learnt to be comfortable with trucks, cars, buses and the odd idiot who would toot! Took a few weeks and all was well but the toot of the train at a level crossing sent him into a bit of a spin the other day - and he is one now!! :D

    Bed Time

We had our pup come and sleep in our room at about 10 weeks, we found that he slept like a rock, didn't wake at 5am and the barking we experienced in the bathroom stopped. He now sleeps at the foot of our bed (on the floor on his own doona) and on occassions where one of the kids has a sleepover and that child is afraid of big dogs, he has slept successfully in the laundry without and reaction at all.
  21. Me too - that's why I had to ask. I might give him another going over after he has been to his playdate down the beach tomorrow, after he has a bath once we are back and leave it at that.
  22. Yes, I know that exactly what I thought! It is a mobile one. I could go to the vets and give him one myself but there is not a drier there so I may as well do it in my bath I figure.....
  23. I have today used the Mars Coat King for the first time and as I said in my previous thread I am impressed. However it did not come with instructions other than how to use and how often. I have a question however. When do you consider the dog done? Is it when you can rake his whole coat and you get no more undercoat or do you just stop when you think enough is enough? I am sorry if this is a stupid question but I think I could go on and on forever without having a clean rake. It is not cutting his top coat which is just fantastic so I just need a little guidance from those in the know.... Thank you
  24. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I used the mars coat king today and what a machine!! I am impressed! Will open a new thread asking a question about it... He has never has a hydrobath, only bathed in our bath and if it's late and he is still damp at 9ish at night he gets the human hairdryer (which he hates). I find it really difficult to part with $40 for a hydrobath, would prefer to spend that on top quality food and the odd toy and repairs/replacements to all he destroys Maybe I will keep it in mind for next time.
