  1. OH MY!!! I havnt heard anything bout this???? but i dont really read papers or watch the news much... that is so horrible, for both sisters and the parents/family
  2. ;) ;) OMG!!! THATS JUST SCARY!!! AND I THINK THAT MAN SHOULD LOOSE HIS BLOODY JOB!!! SO WRONG   REST IN PIECE POOR FELLA.
  3. WELCOME  Also sorry to hear bout your sad new bout your beloved boy atlas RIP But also how exciting about your new boy!!! love the names by the way!!! def looking forward to the pics when they come ;) a boxer is one of my dream dogs, my one day dogs lol.
  4. yep the one and only, they try and make out they are different to any other farm to the media and public. but they are one and the same. i've had 2 councillors reply to me from wellington shire now, no.1. councillor said there is a market for these pups so why not, these farmers are in the ears of the council. the 2nd one told me that dogs on farms can be compared to farming of sheep, cows and chooks. just because its a dog why do they get special treatment! cows, sheep and chooks deserve to be treated fairly too. that is true but apparently this lady has cows and sheep and chooks in her house! cows, sheep and chooks aren't bred in their thousands clogging up shelters being put down because they are past their use by date and we don't eat dogs. meanwhile she has said she is against puppy farms. so all the councillors justify having 14 farms because we have livestock farms so why not have a dog farm. why not they say. she also told me, if the consumer didn't buy these pups then there would be no need to have a farm! i said, that if the buck bloody stopped with your shire bloody continually issuing these permits wouldn't you think that that would go a long way to reducing dogs in shelters. grrrrrrrr the mentality of these people they can't see past their noses and their brains are pretty much where the money is. apparently there isn't a world outside Sale what-so-ever. i think i'll move this thread as what i've found out about these 14 farms deserves a story on its own. :D ;) ;) that is just wrong!!!! all of it is!!!!
  5. Yes she is a softy along with pushing the boundaries, and yes yes i do believe she has a keen sense of humour, seems to love it when i am laughing because of her thanks for your comment
  6. yes she LOOOOOVVVVVES to jump up...... not something i would ever teach a dog, not before teaching it the down command and ok/up command, she just thinks whenever you talk to her or she gets excited she is aloud to jump up all over you....
  7. Recall - not necessarily. Also, a proportion of show breeders believe that obedience training removes show ring "sparkle" so they tend to be light on with obedience training. Certainly nothing other than what is required in the ring, and recall is not required in the ring. I think the view that it removes show ring sparkle is to do with harsher methods that used to be in vogue rather than obedience training per se. Anyway, forget all that. You have behaviour you don't want, and behaviour you do want. Whether rescue, ex-show or whatever, it's up to you to set your criteria now and then train for it. Her past as a show dog may explain her reluctance to sit, but if you make sitting worth her while she'll soon get it. Recall, you'll have to train. She's a poodle, she is probably ridiculously smart, so you have that to work with. Good luck. Edited for syntax Totally agree with all of that and yes she is def smart and testing the waters, which i expected
  8. Have had her 1 week tomorrow and yes i know it can take them a while to settle in so thats why i have been trying to go easy on her while she settles with only short bits of training, and the socialised part of things is what really made me choose this girl being a ex show dog i knew she would of been exposed to alot and not be too worried bout noise and crowds etc the smarts and easy learning i knew was in the poodle anyways
  9. Yes i stand near her and ask her to sit and when she doesnt i ignore her until she naturally sits and then i say sit and good girl, she is already learning i think. she realises im not going to give her attention just because she wants it, if she wants something from me she has to do something for me.
  10. Yes that is what i have been doing but i dont want it to be work work work from the start so i have been keeping the training short and trying to let her settle in first and bond with me.
  11. Yes she def does not react to her name, just the tone of my voice, yes i am pretending she is a puppy she def thinks im a lil crazy and gives me the why would i want to do that when i ask her to do something.... but we are getting there.
  12. The yard that she does go into is only smallish and sequire, i do have a couple of big crates but they are in the laundry atm as doing reno's in the lounge so havnt been able to use those, she is whinging when outside which i dont want her doing but other than having her inside 24/7 dont know how to control? she is a big dog and i want her to be able to move and use some of the excess energy she has. Thanks for the link i shall have a look now.
  13. I do haver a sqeaky toy that i was trying to get her to fetch for me she went after it sniffed and kept running lol, yeah i have just been trying to let her settle in a bit before i go all hard arse on her and trying to get a bit of a feel for her personality, she is very ppl orientated and pretty much ignores all the other animals so that will be good at obedience, i am interested in learning about clicker training???? dont think there will be anyone who will be able to show me hands on though and that is how i learn best
  14. Yes this is what i am thinking, though i am pretty sure she only knows the basics that you mentioned. She has decided that i am hers and is not interested in anyone else i just have to work out what is going to be her motivation to do what i want her to do... i grew up with labs.... you have food they do what you want
  15. Well i am wondering as the title states the difference? I was under the assumption (i know very bad of me one should never assume) that to be a show dog you would have pretty good training? name reconistion, recall, basic commands for instance???? My new girl though i lovely dog doesnt seem to have any basic training other than to walk nicely and constantly paces when on free range in the yard, she is calm at night when she come and sleeps in our room or watches tv with us once the kids are asleep but during the day unless she is on a lead she wont stay still, we are on a farm and the other day i was gardening, went to open the gate to get the wheelbarrow out and she slipped past out of the yard that is fenced for the dogs and out the front near the paddocks so i start calling and she just keeps running circles off in her own lil world, i do believe that she does know sit but chooses not to unless i make her, other than that she doesnt seem to have any training..... i will be doing dog ob with her so i will be training her, i just assumed that a dog that would of had alot of work spent with it for showing (being a standard poodle) would have pretty good training with the basics, esp since i know how highly trainable poodles are, i know this girl is testing me she is trying to sus out whether i am a person who has to be listened to or not.... she will learn the way it is I have sent an email to the breeder but they do not check their emails often, so asking here. The breeder is a full on show person with 3 dif breeds and well looked after animals as to health and breeding. And had a very genuine reason for rehoming juliet. I have trained a handful of dogs over the yrs in dog ob so i know i will be able to train her no worries once she works out im serious and not going to give up just cause she is being difficult. And we will have an even greater bond through the training. Is there a reason that she would not of been trained in general dog ob for showing? I have heard show ppl dont like their dogs automatically sitting when they stop like you are taught at dog ob.
  16. all those stories are just too cute . my two say they are going to go buy me something (to replace what they have usually just eaten ) and when i say oh and where exactly are you getting the money for these things? oh you have money mummy!!! The other night when asked where she was going with her lil hand bag my daughter replied go'n ta london to hisit the queeeeen!!!! (we have been reading nursery rhymes ;) ) she is 3, usually it is byebye bye, bye, BYE! where you going? oh im going ta work like grandad!!! and tries to get out the door to the car :D :D edited to add, when i shave lil FEZ my son says oh he isnt FEZ anymore... isnt he? why not? na cause he is different now, Kinda like a ben ten dog!!!
  17. Is this the puppy farm outside of longford??? i know they had a community open day at the start of the yr??? bbq and the fire squad out there???..... when i first moved here i applied for a job there as it was advertised as a kennel.... fund out later that it was a puppy farm
  18. thanks ppl think i will ebay these books i love reading.
  19. i had a timmy or several when i was a kid growing up on the farm --- but i always called 'em lamsy Yeah idk he is very demanding, lucky we not expecting anymore for a few months his mum was the second last to drop.
  20. I agree with pretty much everything joel has said, and would like to add that if it were my dog i would def rather it be in someones home than a pound (i volunteer at a pound/shelter and would not want my dogs to have to go through that for even one day) i would of thought more ppl would feel that way, maybe it might take me an extra day or two to find them but i would rather it be me more stressed out looking for them then them going out of their minds sitting in a tiny pound cell in the cold with no sun and dogs barking, barking, barking. Also as others have said 3 day???? my dads dogs when i was young got out and went for a wonder.... a week later they were found running through a farmers sheep paddock, the farmer was going to shoot them but took the time to realise they were not chasing the sheep just running through the paddock and that they had collors on so were someones pet, he caught em and called the council and because my parents had left discriptions of these dogs, all the council had to do was call my parents, one of my best memories as a kid is my dad coming and pulling me out of class walking me to the ute and pulling back the tarp and me seeing my best friend and tinker sitting there looking a bit worse for wear but good other than that, they had been following the coast through farm land and were a good half an hr drive away along the rd which wasnt half as long as the distance they went. If they had of been picked up any further along it would not of been our council that was notified so maybe we would not of found them in time???
  21. :birthday: that is a crack up!!!
  22. ;) ;) at other ppls replies!!! :D ;) My two poodles whinge, The new girl juliet (standard) whinges and barks quietly when in the yard without me esp if she knows im inside even though she is happilly running around out there!! :D whinges also if i leave a room and she cant follow, FEZ the toy he mostly just whinges to come inside while he is scratching the glass door or if he is really excited with me n i wont pick him up lol , My parents whippet just got desexed and ohhhh the carry on!!! she was rolling around on the couch crying like she had been split up the middle!!! the vets rang my mum to see if she could pick her up earlier than planned because she was disturbing the other pacients lol, and when i looked it was a whole 3 stitches lol and they sent home exra pain meds for her n everything, need less to say she wasnt talking to anyone for days. :p
  23. Kara came to me (through my parents when i was 6) to show me how special dogs are, how they will listen to you when no one else has the time, how they will never be the one to let you down and that they will be your best friend no matter what!!! To show me the power i had on another being life by the light i would see in her eyes everytime she seen me walk out to the yard or say her name even when she was crippled and old she would bounce around in joy and to give me such joy growing up with her that i knew i never wanted to live without a dog and i wanted my children to grow up with them. RIP honkey donkey. Butch was my dads dog but came into my life to show me the joys of dog obedience, but the sorrows of loving and loosing too early. RIP. Elar to show me the bad effects of bad breeding and what it can do to a breed. Fez to show me the joys of a toy dog and a inside dog that can sit on ur lap and just cuddle, and to laugh when things dont go right. ETA and the joys of good breeding!!!
