Is She Pure Or What Does She Have In Her?
ash&elar replied to Sunnyflower's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would say bullmastiff x great dane or bullmastiff x ridgeback, but def bullmastiff. hard to say when she is still a pup she looks like a old girl already with the size of her haha she seems very sweet in the pics, good luck! -

Thanks for sharing, and i dont mean this in a bad way to you but that is exactly why i would pts any dog that even snapped at a child, just not worth the risk imo (what i wrote in my previous post), i am sorry that happened but as you say you have learnt now. im glad your daughter wasnt seriously injured too.

Thanks yes i will enjoy her very much, she is great.

\ Are you kidding??? I agree the dog should not start viciously attacking the child or even draw blood, but you would PTS if it even snapped near a child who had injured it? The OPs dog has not "chased down a child and killed it" so i don't even know why that was mentioned here... I am pretty shocked at that too. If you stood on a dogs tail or hurt it ofcourse its going to react. Maybe not in the biting way but some dogs will. I would never consider putting a dog down due to something like that. My dog was fear agressive. However not towards people but still the behaviourist worked wonders and I now have a well behaved dog and the past agressive ways are hardly seen if ever. I think the best thing is a behaviourist. I hope someone can recommend someone in WA for the OP your choice not mine, your belief not mine.

The OPs dog has not "chased down a child and killed it" so i don't even know why that was mentioned here... children are defenceless against dogs and can be very damaged by a dog, inpart because they are very close in height to a dog and therefore their faces get the snap. that is why imo it is much worse if a dog snaps at a child than an adult. a dog should know its place in the heirarchy and snapping at a child shows it doesnt know that, this imo is a very dangerous situation. That is what i believe.

And no i am not kidding at all, everyone is entitled to their own opinions not everyone agrees that is life. I would not have a dog that would bite at a child that is my choice and my beliefs.

So a dog that will chase down a child and kill it should be allowed to live because it isnt its fault that it is that way???? Any dog in my whole extended family would be pts if it so much as attempted to bite a child even if the child accidently stood on its tail and the dog snapped at the kid, a dog is aware of who it is biting/going to bite unless it was cornered and being threatend it should move away from a child, complain vocally but not bite, i do not believe the way a dog is has everything to do with the owner, some dogs are genetically predispositioned to bad temps, some dogs should be pts for the safety of others. to the OP i agree that a behavourist is needed, but if this dog has had a go at a child in the past it is something you will ALWAYS have to watch out for, is that something you are capable or even willing to do for the rest of this dogs life?

no to both.

I am a newbie std poodle owner :( so far so good. Julie is an ex show dog that could possible produce carries of juvenile renal disease, her half brother who has the same father is a definate carrier, so she could or could not be a carrier but as there is no test the breeder did not want to take the risk so removed her from her breeding plan. Julie is well socialised with ppl and dogs, both she tends to ignore other than me and my partner who are "her pack" and the kids which she was not used to before coming here but now loves them, she was playing football with the 4 kids (2kids are my partners from another reli) on the weekend out here on the farm we were kicking it and she was snatching it and doing zoomies with it in her mouth and accidently kicking it along with her front feet!!!! soooo funny. she is settling in nicely now after only being with us for 9 days and is very attached already to me and my partner. The other day just after i got her my mother mentioned to her friend who used to show ridgebacks that i gotten a std poodle and she told my mum to tell me to be careful because std poodles can be quiet nasty and not as good temp as the other sizes bla bla, im like wtf? she doesnt know the breed, would never of read up on the breed, i say something like that to mum and she said oh but she would of seen them at the shows etc.... the ignorance of some ppl annoys me to no extent!!!!

Hi and welcome I dont know much about the two breeds you have mentioned, other DOLers will prob be able to tell you more on whether they are suited to you, But just a few questions to make ppl helping you easier, have either of you owned a dog before? what is it that you are most looking for in a dog? eg easily trainable? high/low energy, size, type of coat/shedding? amount of time you are willing to spend on grooming. There is prob a few more that others will add its been a long day for my brain. oh have you thought of getting a shelter/rescue dog or have you got your hearts set on a reg'd purebred?

So, this means that any domesticated animal raised on a 'farm' to produce a commodity (which would be the puppies) for subsistence (i would assume not) OR profit (which is the case) is considered livestock. Which then means that these dogs can be considered livestock. These are the arguments you're going to face while trying to fight this battle. I don't think you're quite prepared to argue the point far enough. I don't think puppy farms are going to be banned any time soon (unfortunately). The only thing that might happen (and is in the pipeline if i understand correctly) is that stricter guidelines will be put in place. You're not going to get anywhere by having the local council hate you. You want them on your side. At the moment, the people running the puppy farms are on far better terms with the council members than you are. You're not going to get anywhere by abusing them. But my concern is this (and is the reason I initially posted here): For someone that is so passionate about animal welfare, you are only concerned about one animal (this is a HUGE assumption, but until proven otherwise, ill stick with it). The reason I say this is because there is cruelty going on every day that the average person buys in to (again, I am assuming that you are an 'average person') when they go to the supermarket. Most people dont think about it this way and dont relate their beloved pets to the animals that wind up on their plate. I figured that if I could at least plant a seed of thought in peoples minds through this topic, then maybe I could initiate some change in regards to animal welfare which is not limited to just dogs. I just think its a bit hypocritical for the public to be so up in arms about wrong doing on one part, but to be essentially demanding the same wrongdoings to be done on another. Although you do address some good points and I admire your passion for your beliefs, I believe that we as the public are entitled to be passionate about whichever causes and areas we choose to be passionate about without being critically judged by anyone. This is what i tried to say in the post that i wrote earlier then my net dropped out and when i re-wrote the post i think i forgot to add it back in. -
Did You Buy Your Puppy From A Less Than Reputable "breeder"?
ash&elar replied to PoppyDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
my first lab i got was from a "breeder" traveled hours to go pick this puppy up. shouldnt of taken her but did and my gut instint was right, elar was half the size she was supposed to be and had been kept in a games room her whole life i dont think she had ever been outside in her whole 14weeks of life, her mother was 7-8 but looked 10-12 and a bad example but the stud she had gotten to use on friends favour was brilliant so i took her n hoped for the best, she had issues from the start and still does have, her eyes arent right either, she kind of looks crossed eyed and has hair trigger aggression and the same things dont always set it off, because of that she lives with my uncle and aunty who have grown children and not alot of visiters, my uncle takes her for a walk/jog/run everyday and she is very happy but because my home life is very hectic with alot of ppl coming and going i wouldnt take the risk with her here. in all other ways she is a great loving dog. my lesson learnt. -

A chicken, pig, cow etc are all livestock, dogs are canines and the two cannot be compared they are very much different types of animals. I do not think that MOST ppl condone the mistreatment of any animal livestock or other, BUT this is a dog site ppl are here because they love dogs, most ppl unless they live on a farm or a country town have prob never even seen a chicken close up let alone a pig and though ignorance is not an excuse they prob do not know of the conditions that some of these other animals are kept in, look at how many ppl who own dogs didnt or still do not know of brb and puppy mills? or how many dogs die in shelters everyday? they own this type of animal and are still or were un informed about all these things. I am prob going to get flamed for this too but.... it is not ok to treat any animal with neglect or cruelty BUT i believe it is worse to do it to a dog, DOG= MANS BEST FRIEND. PIG=BACON. Ducks for cover..... -

Joel, i do kind of agree with you here on the main level of no animal deserves to be treated like this BUT i think it is worse for the dogs as they are a different type of animal to a chicken, I have no problem eating meat as long as the animal has been humanly killed, i live on a farm and so have my own eggs, BUT next door they have the hens for 12months then chop off their heads once they slow down on the amount of eggs they produce, where a chicken can be happy in an enclosure with adequiet food and water etc and lil human companionship and dog would be misserable, every animal has its place i guess and every animal has its needs and they are quiet different from animal to animal. hope i have worded that right... -

Should Aggressive Dogs Be Taken To Offleash Parks?
ash&elar replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
when i was younger my dad had a black lab, i took him to dog ob from 6months old he was great with the other dogs until one day a gsd the same age (about 12months) but at least twice his size jumped him as we were doing zig zagging through the dogs, from then he became more n more dog aggressive, but i knew what he was like and kept him far enough away from the other dogs as to not be a problem, we got up to the last level in dog ob in the off leash classes, being able to drop stay him in the line and walk away leaving him sitting next to the other dogs, i was always looking for any body language that would indicate he was uncomfortable or possiblie going to do something, he never attacked another dog at dog ob because i never gave him the chance. BUT if i hadn't of had that control over him i wouldn't of had him there, so think it really depends like others have said the level of DA and the level of control. -
also noticed this but what my last bad experience was last time at the vets, i had my lil daughter there as i couldnt not take her that time, there was a fella in there with a huge dog had the look of a pig dog type kind of pointer/ great dane/ gray hound ish my daughter is just on 100cms tall and this dohs head was way higher than her face, now my daughter isnt scared of dogs and at 3 yrs old can be a bit full on and not listen but i held her hand and said no you cant pat the dog you dont touch other ppls animals, walked her out to the car and as i was unlocking it the guy came out wit the dog towing him on the end of a long leash we were parked closest to the clinic so he had to walk close past us to get to his car, now he clearly could not of stopped this dog if he had of wanted to, i dont know that the dog is good with kids or whatever and it came within inches of my daughters face, now i am pretty laid back bout having my kids round animals but i got shivers as that happened what if she made a high pitch sqeal as yaya is known to do just as it passed n gave it a shock? anyway just wanted to also rant about ppl not having control over their animals!!! i know it happens with all sized dogs but the potential for damage is so much higher the larger the dog.
