New Puppy With Young Child? Am I Asking For Trouble?
ash&elar replied to vernie's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think its fine as others have mentioned i was raised with labs and sure sometimes as we got older one of us would accidently get knocked over but it was nothing to us we knew the dog didnt mean it and we didnt know any diff it was all fun and games and i think labs just make the most awesome family pets. Just make sure you do your homework with breeders and ask all the right questions there is alot of dodgy ppl breeding them as well as alot of great ppl. -
I have had a few pm's and now i am confident that he is ok, but will be getting a few extra things for his diet just to make sure.

Bad Week For Irressponisble Dog Owners
ash&elar replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
HaHa yes fb the joys!!! I usually dont bother giving ppl advice too much anymore because i just get frustrated at the lil ppl know or understand about their animals dogs esp. Like this comment that i have heard too many times to remember "oh look that dog has a boner (sorry bit rude) he must be excited hahaha oh put it away you dirty dog" ummmmm imo the dog maybe excited but not in that way!!! ppl who dont understand animal behaviour always try to put a human emotion on it. Its sad about that lil pup (that they dont seem to know much about the breed or dogs in general) my parents jokingly call me a hard a*** cause i crate my toy poodle puppy at night time and dont let him sleep in my bed.... my bed is my space and if i can help it at all i dont let my children sneak in there in the middle of the night so why would i let my dog? (thats just my opinion ;) ) my parents whippet puppy sleeps in my lil sisters bed at night.... it slaps her in the face to go to the toilet in the morning i have kids to do that :D ;) -
I thought maybe someone here might be able to help me with some advice At the min i am staying at my parents farm, we bought our first flock of sheep in feb (we are all new to the farm scene) anyway one of the ewes was in labour on friday so i kept an eye on it but it just couldnt get this lamb out so i herded it into the holding yard and managed to pull this lamb out (its nose and toes had been out for over an hour by this stage and its bag broken for even longer so i thought it would surely be dead) once i got the lamb out i held him upside down and roused him and to my relief he started to wriggle and breath!!!! but im assuming because of the truma of the birth the ewe wanted nothing to do with him so after hours of trying to get her to bond with him i took him away after a nasty head butt from her, i milked her for the colustrum (sp?) and all up he had about 200mls of this over the rest of the day. we bought Palastart milk replacer for lambs and kids, his first few poo's were fine the normal black/dark tarry ones but since sat morning he has had the runs at first bright yellowy and watery, then a lil firmer and more of a green brown colour, but today he still has it and it is worrying me as i thought his stomach would of settled down and gotten used to the formula. I have raved on more than i planned sorry if you have read this far i was wondering whether any of you knew a home remedy that maybe you use on your new born pups that might work same for a new born lamb? i know dogs and sheep are very different but i thought seeings how they both can only sirvive on milk at the start that maybe someone might be able to help? I really dont want lil timmy to get sick or die he lives inside wears nappies and sleeps in the lounge in my spare dog crate at night. I will of course take him to the vets if he seems unwell which he doesnt at the min. Thanks in advance for any help.

Bad Week For Irressponisble Dog Owners
ash&elar replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
aw geez seems alot of you have had alot of bad experiences lately! The only thing that has happened around me lately has been on facebook where i have a couple of "friends" getting RID of their dogs one guy has recently bought his partner a lab puppy, now he has pics up of his mix bred dog which must be around 2 to 4 yrs old now saying "FREE TO GOOD HOME NEED TO GET RID OF HIM" in the photo's you can see its tied to a kennel on a conrete slab (prob under a car port) just had another look and apparently he jumps the fences and the guy doesnt have time for him.... Another "friend" recently bought a cav puppy from a byb it is not 4 and a half months old and the woman has decided she wants to move and as she is renting it is too hard to get another house with a dog so she is selling it "hopefully i can get back most of my money" obviously alot of thought went into that decision.... -
Discusting, and as others have said the culprit will prob get away with a slap on the wrist if that.

Good luck, glad you decided to stick around i nearly didnt either lol but ppl here do want the best for your dog even if sometimes they do come across the wrong way

Is It Possible For Dogs Temperment To Change This Much?
ash&elar replied to ash&elar's topic in General Dog Discussion
The shelters need to be more upfront and tell the people surrendering the dog if it will most likely or definitely be euthanased. The one I worked for didn't but when I took the job on reception, I told the owners the truth. The boss (that I detested) couldn't see the point in telling them, but even though it didn't make much difference at the time I hoped at least some of them would think before they got another dog. It did constantly amaze me that people could be told "all we can do is put the dog down this afternoon" and they would say ok and sign the papers with no hesitation and not even seem the slightest bit upset. I also told people that rang for us to take litters of puppies, if the puppies would be homed or pts. Anything under 8 weeks was pts and we only ever kept one litter at a time of med-large puppies, so if any others came in they would also be pts the same day. The saddest case was a woman on a pension who took in a pregnant stray cattle cross and didn't know she could have her speyed while pregnant. The bitch had 10 puppies by c-section and the stupid vet never even suggested that they should not revive the puppies. No he worked hard and revived them all. The bitch was very ill and had no milk so this poor good samaritan, tube fed round the clock, got them weaned and finally when they were 5 weeks old she ran out of money to feed them. She had no homes lined up and rang to see if we could take the litter. I told her firstly that we were full and the shelter policy was that puppies had to be 8 weeks so they were ready to desex and home, but even then I couldn't guarantee that they would not be pts. She intended to keep the mother dog and have her desexed but I have no idea what she ended up doing with the babies as she never came in with them. She was going to try to borrow some more money from family because she couldn't handle having the puppies pts after all she had put in to raise them. Most shelters are just not set up for puppy rearing so they are not the answer for an unwanted litter that should never have been born. That is a sad story! and i did not know that about the shelters thanks for sharing and i think your idea of being upfront about the animals futures, i did not realise that most are pts so quickly, like i said the shelter i work at takes in all of the cats and dogs and tries to rehome them but this is a new shelter under new management it was originally just the pound, now we have two isle with enough room for i think about 50dogs and i think about 30 cats (including the pound animals) the animals are here for a while then if not adopted moved to coldstream.... coldstream might not be a no kill shelter i am new to this so not sure on all the facts and they have not had in an aggressive dog since i was there (just a biting pound cat :D ) -

The shelter i work at is also the local pound, the take in any surrendered cats or dogs, also the pound animals if they are not collected after 8 days. If they arnt adopted here, they get sent up to a shelter at coldstream. -

I got 1 alaskan malamute, 2 anatolian shepherd dog, 3 bernese mountain dog, 4 black russian terrier, 5 boxer. And the only one i would consider seriously would be the boxer, mostly because of the hair but also because i think 1,2 and 4 too much for me to handle training etc wise. all beautiful dogs.... anatolian shepherd would be good to protect my parents lambs from all of these turd foxes though..... -

I said i understood but did not think it is right, esp if the dog was not there for 24hrs but as ppl have pointed out it isnt a perfect world, i do not mean to sound as though the shelter is doing the wrong thing im sure they do the best they can i wish that large dogs got the same chances as small dogs. -

He was def put down within 24hrs for growling at the staff and vet when they were trying to do a health check (i asked to make sure, but this is just what the owners were told which was repeated from its original source). You say offloaded, they were trying to do the right thing by the dog the husband was diagnosed with cancer and the wife was nursing him they had to move into a block of units with no room not to mention no time to give the dog quality of life. Because the rspca is the only shelter they were aware of, i myself did not know of the no kill shelters untill i started working at one. But i do realise that there are way more animals who need adoption than ppl coming in to adopt them. My thing was he was not given more than 24hrs that seems a lil harsh. Sorry, but I would have put him down too, a 50kg dog growling at handlers is not on and a risk to rehome, why should they put theirs and the publics safety at risk? The dog may well have been fine outside of a shelter environment but that is where he was put and unfortunately he is the one that paid the ultimate price. When you handover a dog you are effectively signing over all responsibility to that animal and they would have been informed at the time there was a chance he may not have been rehomed, yet he was left there anyway. I am very sorry for your friends situation and illness, truly I am, but that doesn't lessen their responsibilty to their pet. But a 2 to 10kg dog being not so dangerous because of size alone would of been a dif story? I can understand this to a point but i still do not think it is right. -

Is It Possible For Dogs Temperment To Change This Much?
ash&elar replied to ash&elar's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sorry Jules. And to the original poster, yes, stress like this on a dog can change a lot of things very quickly. I hope you can help some dogs in your volunteering work, but please accept that there is often not a second chance for dogs. Thanks i thought that maybe stress could do it. Yeah i already want to take home every lab that comes in! luckily most of our dogs are pound dogs and they are picked up, though we do have this young pup that was brought in as a stray and is now up for adoption, i thought he must of been about 6months just from the look and size of him but he was chewing on my pants the other day when i was cleaning his pen and his tooth got stuck which made me notice he still has puppy teeth! he has the markings of a jrt with a bit of a beagle look to his face but already the size of say a medium kelpie? i named him toby and he is full of mischief but he will be getting moved to the larger shelter soon. me n my sister always try to give the dogs a walk/run each when we are there so they get a lil bit better quality of life. Please try to tell every puppy and dog buyer that "a puppy is for life" - they are our responsibility as owners and it should not be so easy for us to hand the responsibility of ownership to another person or organisation imho. We are stuck with our relatives for life, and so it should be with the dogs when people become dog owners. Souff -

Sorry but i dont agree with this, i believe MOST dogs deserve a second chance and even a third or fourth esp when their rehoming is of no fault of their own, the way i read this is you are saying it is better to take a dog into your vets and have it pts than take it to a shelter where it could be rehomed? even if the chances are slim i would hope ppl would make the shelter choice. -

Is It Possible For Dogs Temperment To Change This Much?
ash&elar replied to ash&elar's topic in General Dog Discussion
This is what i was thinking but didnt want to be judgmental as i dont know the stats on what dogs get pts at the rspca or any shelters, my dad also said a similar thing, pretty sad really. Another question is there a holding time for the rspca or any of the shelters? like 24hrs or 48hrs before they can pts or move on to another shelter in case a owner regrets their decision and comes back for their pet? I just think what if that dogs owner had brought him in because he had been really naughty for a long time and they were mad n angry n made a rash decision but slept on it n came back the next morning their dog would of already been pts! -
We are on acerage and only have 3 neighbours to the left and one across the road and i think only one neighbour has dogs the second house up from us, one i think is a purebred bc but not sure if its a reg'd one and a small mix breed i think, Atm me, my partner and my two kids are staying with my parents while we save etc to buy our own place and they have midget she was ment to be a miniture foxy (mum didnt know at the time but it would of been a byb) she is now 14 and old n going blind and deaf, they recently got a whippet puppy cindy, and i have my purebred reg'd toy poodle Fez, elar the lab who is purebred and on mains reg but shouldnt be, i didnt realise at the time people could still be byb with reg'd dogs.

sorry cant help you out there.... good luck though

A beautiful male lab with the perfect head and body i have always dreamed for (any colour ) with perfect manners and all the hard work with training done (because i dont have enough time which is why i cant get one yet and i have to wait till we buy our own house ) oh and a money tree so i can do all the things i wish i could, also as someone mentioned before some pills that you take and the weight just drops off.... so once i have those plenty of chocolate, ice cream, pasta, pizza all the good stuff my kids to be as obedient as my dog aaaaaaaannnnd i think that is all.... for now
-
Thats sad, i think your plans of holding him in your yard and calling the pound is a good idea MAYBE it might teach them, though i find it hard to believe that the parents arent already aware of the dangers to the dog and their wallet if he is let to roam. Good luck i hope they pull their heads in and do what is right for the dog.

I am just curious as i dont know the answer, but here is the story. Friends of the family had a big cross bred dog looked something like a mastiff/boxer cross (quite big about 40-50kilo's with similar feature of a boxer or mastiff but he could of been a mix of anything i dont know where they got him from) he was 2 and a half yrs old, had been desexed as a pup, with regular vet visits for booster shots n all that, he wasnt the best with other dogs as they didnt know many people with dogs and never did any formal training with him just the training they did on their own, but he was great with all people, my mum told me a while ago they came home to find a stranger sitting in the front yard with him drinking a cuppa (think the area was a bit on the rough side) and the dog was sitting there happily getting a pat, anyway just trying to show he was good with people kids from toddlers through to elderly (that i seen the few times we all visited for family things and catching up) but sometime this yr they had to make the decision to rehome him for personal reasons (health and having to move into a smaller house) they tried to rehome him themselves but no one was interested so they had to take him to an rspca shelter they told the people of his problems with other dogs (it was mostly male dogs close to his own size not all dogs) and they said something along the lines of if he is good with people and ok with most dogs he should be fine but he does have to pass the vet test and temp test?.......... Someone they know is good friends with one of the workers at the shelter and this person asked about the dog (i think that is how they found out i have been told this by my mother who got told by the dogs owners) and they were told that the dog was put down the next morning because he was not any good with the staff or the vet.... To me this does not sound like the dog i knew, and i thought maybe a bit harsh on the shelters side of things IF he was playing up would they not take into concideration that he was probably very stressed and scared after being left at a totally new place with no one he knew and dogs barking and all the rest that happens at a shelter? I guess what i am asking is in you opinoins and or experiences does this sound like something that is likely to of happened and do you think his size and breeds had something to do with the decision? ( i have only just started volinteering at a shelter and it is a no pts shelter and pound the animals are moved to elsewhere if not adopted but i am not sure what they do if there is a aggresive dog as none have come in) and i watch the rspca show where they rehabilitate (wrong spelling sorry) the small dogs (most of the time) but have not seen anything about the big dogs. Hope i have given enough info and asked the questions right, sorry if this post is hard to understand didnt quite know how to write it all. let me know if i need to clear anything up.
