The Least Expensive Super Premium Food
KitKat replied to DobermanDave's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Proplan isn't badly priced and is a very good product...it's still around the $80-$90 a bag but you're getting 17/18kg's rather then the 13/15kg's for your money. -
I wouldn't say it's a 'definite' thing...i had a vet tell me that about my Bronx, he saw the age and weight details before he saw my dog (while me and dog were still in the waiting room) and decided he was obese and proceded to tell me his thoughts in detail. He went on to tell me that GSD's should weigh, at most, 20-25kg's at my boys age instead of the 39kgs that he actually weighted in at. My pup has always been lean and was actually a touch too ribby at the time. The vet made a point of doing the rib test etc with a disappointed sounding 'oh...he's not too bad' before we managed to leave. ETA - I do realise my dog is of heffalump size but he's not overweight

Perhaps that's a whole new thread? As to the kibble issue...it's up to each person what they feed their dogs...some breeds are more prone to the chances of bloat then others, also not everyone has the time and freezer space for BARF, nor does everyone which to feed such to their dogs. And that's their choice. You dog has a predisposition to bloat, it's a shame but you have found a food that doesn't cause such a problem with your dog and that's great. But others don't have constant bloat as a problem for their dogs and if what they are feeding their dogs works for their dogs then who is to gainsay that?

With regards to food my dogs cost me around $10-$15 a week which covers the pair of them. One dog is a 9yr old Rotti X (38 to40kg's) and the other is a GSD (somewhere between 42 to 45kg's, haven't had him weighed for a few weeks..lol) who is a couple of weeks shy of a year old. They are fed mostly RAW/BARF and supplimented with kibble (when i forget to defrost stuff..lol) ETA - weights

It is interesting to see the 'Meaty Muesli" The corn is whole pieces of dried corn, the puffed rice and at least some of the grains are whole etc. The meat pieces look like dried shredded meat that have been made into meaty pellets etc. I bought a bundle of the sealed bags for emergencies (while out camping, or crashing over night unexpectedly at friends etc) and of course had to open one to check it out. And apart from some colouring (red on some kibble and green on some others, nothing else 'looks' artificially coloured) it doesn't seem sooooo bad. I've also seen some dogs that are fed that only and they seem to be doing ok. However it's not something i will personally be using for other then the odd ocasion. Especially since a cheap ready made BARF supplier has been found (check out the BigDog thread)

There isn't a huuuuge range of dog foods available in Australia like there is in the US...they are starting to creep across the waters but it's a slow process :D
-
Check out Greyhound food suppliers...one of the ones up this way already has a premade barf type mix which they sell in 2kg packs...might be worth seeing what's available down your way.. (and no i don't have greyhounds but the food is available to the public...it just seems to be a bit of a secret lol)

Supercoat works for some dogs and doesn't work for others, I'm guessing if the breeder recommended the stuff it works ok for them. Supercoat is also a reasonable product that isn't too costly...and puppy buyers are more likely to stick with it rather then starting off on a high premium product go at the cost and drop back to Pal puppy etc etc. ETA - I've looked at Nutrience and have spoken to a few people that use it and they've not had a problem and were willing to recommend it to me so...

My Rotti x Lab tends to get hot spots on a regular basis...sometimes he'll go weeks and weeks without one and then one will pop up out of nowhere. But to get rid of them i clip the spot and will use saline and ACV and they are gone within a matter of days, then it's just a matter of the fur growing back..lol. One of the last ones he had took over his entire cheek but i think that was started by the two dogs having a bit of rough play, he got a scratch/something, and it went from there. The lab i had when i was a kid also had problems with hotspots and the vets gave us this fluoro yellow cream to use....the spots used to take a lot longer to heal with that stuff then Harm's do now with the ACV or saline. ETA - he has had a few changes of diet and the frequency of hot spots hasn't changed.

Hey Wagsalot...how did you go with Mac's tail?
-
Lil Pix...keep an eye out for turkey wings and legs as well...my boys love em! and it takes longer then a second or two for them to be munched crunched and swallowed ETA - we get them for around $2-$3 per kg up here...
-
Whole carrots are great for the teeth and to give something for the dog to do...but it doesn't break down enough for them...hence the reason to smush it for them..lol
-
yes...normal people use the necks and frames to make soup stock with But they have become more available because us dog people are taking over the world mwahahahahahahahaha Chicken feet are also good crunchy snacks for dogs
-
Hehe the only time my dogs have gotten greenies is when they've conned them out of the suppliers at the pet expos etc etc. But yes...green yogurt type poo is the end result
-

Stick some peanut butter over the little hole that will keep it 'capped' long enough for everything inside it to freeze

My two large dogs love the chicken frames and lamb necks...and haven't had a problem with them. I used to prefer giving the whole lamb necks as i was a tad unsure about the sliced ones because of the hole in the middle of them. But they are easier to get so i tried them and the boys just munched and crunched and they were gone without a problem so...all is good with them  I also get some little roasting chickens whole and cheap which the boys get and luuuurrrve to eat.
