You Know That "doggie Smell'?
KitKat replied to Becky in Oz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If my boys get a bit whiffy i tend to give them a good brush which usually takes care of the problem...tho i do have both the Squirt spray and shine and the PlushPuppy Odour Muncher for special occasions -
What T-Time and Ellz said :D You can either go a raw diet and see how that goes (Dr Billinghurst's books are the way to go ) Or try the tough love thing with the dry food - don't give him any of the wet/raw foods until he's eating the dry food happily else you'll end up back where you started. Stick the kibble in a bowl and offer it for breaky - give him 10mins to eat and if he doesn't then take it away - don't give him anything else, no treats no nothing - offer the bowl of dry food again for dinner...again 10mins to eat, if he still doesn't then take it away again - continue the next day. It can sometimes take 48hours for a dog to realise you aren't going to cave in to their whims and eat - when they doo have the next several days as just dry food then slowly re-introduce whatever else you want to give him I did this with my GSD pup when he was 4months - he tried the 'i'm not going to eat that! I want something else!" trick that early...lol...so with some 'tough love' he hasn't turned down anything since

Well...quality wise you are going up a few steps if you go to Nutrience :D However i would suggest you get a small bag and see if your dogs like it. One of my two dogs wouldn't eat the puppy formula - he'd literally eat around it and leave it - luckily for me my older dog woofed finished it off for me
-
Hehehehehe! If you are after a good food for skin conditions try the ProPlan sensitive - it's based on salmon
-
Can't add much more in regards to Nutrience then Pix has But...it is considered one of the premium/super premium foods so the prices do reflect that. If you wanted to stay at much the same price range as Supercoat, Bonnie and pedigree performance is pretty good stuff and at about the same level as Supercoat :D

I think i have a lead for all occasions... everything from lil snub leads to lungelines But i got some very nice ones from www.fordogtrainers.com - snub lead, police lead and basic 6foot lead. I also find the rogzdogz leads brilliant...comfy to use, hard wearing, long lasting and very very strong! And there is a variety of types to choose from

I'd only be concerned if the mouse pee'd or poo'd in the food (seeing as the mouse didn't look sickly as it did a runner) - otherwise...i'd be considering the mouse lucky he wasn't just an added bit of protein in the food ;)

Vitamin C Aloe Vera Juice Apple Cider Vinegar ;)

I am always amazed that the dogs don't end up bald after all the fur and fluff that comes off them
-
I actually find grooming Bronx very relaxing...and he loves it as well. Sabre (AKA Brat) is a different matter altogether I brush him...and he sulks because he can't get away while i'm brushing
-
That sounds like one hell of a dryer!!!
-
yup yesterday i got a shopping bag full of my Bronx and that was with very little effort - and using a double rowed rake  Got to love it when they drop their coat :D
-
I've not had problems with my dogs and withholding of water - if water was left with them they drink and need to go to the toilet earlier - not to mention Sabre is likely to tip it everywhere. Which is why they have 2 loo breaks, of which the 10.30 one doesn't give them access to water, which leave them as empty as possible - and i'm up at 6am to let them out again. However they have plenty to drink thru the day, and in their other breaks - it's just the last break they don't get any further water -and it seems to have been fine for them - perhaps i'm just lucky.

I'm not pro or anti anything - if something works for hte dog in question then that's great. My boy was about 5 months old when i changed him to raw - i was told it was the best thing for him and 'fell into line' as it were - it was the worst thing i could have done for Bronx. I was feeding waaaay more then the recommended amount for a pup, his coat was dry and course, you could easily feel his back bone and hips bones, he couldn't keep weight on, etc. He was on barf/raw for about 7-8 months as i tried to see if it was the protien source that was the problem - within weeks of putting him back onto dry with a side of raw he was looking better, actually putting weight on and keeping it. Dogs are individuals some do better on some things then others, indeed my dogs do better on some brands of dry then others. It's just one of those things...when you find something that works go with it, if you think your dogs could be doing better then try something else.

He can cope without a drink for a few hours more...it's only if he needs to pee/poo that he gets let out. Give him his dinner at around 6pm-6.30pm and give him access to water up until two hours before you go to bed. Give him his last pee break just before you go to bed with no access to water - he will get the idea. Both my boys know not to drink on their last break so they have full access to whatever they want - but they hold out till it's time for me to get up and get ready for work.

I did. I changed back to dry food because my GSD was loosing condition terrible and just wasn't doing very well on it at all. I know this isn't answering this question as you want - but thought i'd answer it as i can anyway. I've been feeding dry with a side of raw for about 12 months now and my GSD is 2yrs old now. Due to my personal experiance on Barf i chose not to feed my new pup on the same diet. Both are doing very nicely on dry with the side of raw. However - peer pressure is no reason to stop feeding something that your dog is doing great on - whether that be barf/raw or dry. If you dog is doing nicely on it, and you are happy to continue on it...then stick to it  "The best food for your dog is the food they do best on - packaged or unpackaged"

Erny - The vet range of Hills is supposed to be very very good...a few steps above their retail range.
-
Also dogs can be vaccinated with a C4, C5, C6 or C7 and can STILL get KC

What Cordy said :p
-
Basically...just keep at it - smaller dogs on average do seem to take long to 'get it' then larger breeds - not sure how much of that might be linked to larger pups having bigger bladders etc? :p
-
Hehehe...i know the feeling Sunny sometimes i get slow trying to think out my reply - only to post and find it's been said several times or written better :p

Basically? because it doesn't work. Pups/dogs are like babies...once it's done it's out of their head and they don't know what they are getting in trouble for. And rubbing their noses in their mess is just likely to cause them to mess where they shouldn't more often. Basically you have to keep an eye on them..depending on age take your pup outside to go to the toilet everyone 1-2 hours, as well as after they sleep, eat, drink, finish playing etc. If you can't supervise the pup then put them somewhere easy to clean up, or which encourages them to hold on eg a crate. Puppies again are like children in that they can't hold on for very long, and they don't get much notice about when they need to go - that's your job basically. When you take your pup outside for their loo break be very boring, don't encourage them to play etc until after they finish their business. Once they have started going to the toilet quietly and gently say something along the lines of "Good toilet" or whatever you want as your toilet word, not to excitable else they will may try and stop mid flow. Once they have finished tell them what a wonderful and good puppy they are in happy happy tones so they know what they are doing is right. Only tell your pup off if you catch them in the act of toileting inside - and even then just let it be a short growl or a 'no' and then take them outside - when they finish going to the loo where you want them to...praise praise praise.

For Brisbanites - There is a very good op shop on Adelaide Street, just down from MBF and across from the old DJ's building - it's up a lil mall way but they have a fantastic range of classy, good quality 2nd hand clothing at quite reasonable prices

I wan't meaning say a chunk of marrow regularly...more along the ideas of a big lot of the stuffonce in a while - the richness can be to much for some dogs if they aren't used to it (same can happen with lamb and roo). And i've seen dogs snaffle the innards of a big recreational bone because of course they love it...only for it to go thru them not long after...tho seems to happen more so if they haven't eaten anything else to slow it's progress
-
Fasting on a big marrow bone isn't necessarily the best idea...why? because the marrow is very very rich and if they get to much it will go straight thru them. Meaty bones such as turkey pieces or lamb flaps etc wouldn't be a problem for example.
