  1. Just remember that with the kibbles being different sizes and weights that size will cause issues with weight unless you are checking the amount on the scales. The Royal Canin cups list weight amounts for each food on their cups...so that 180gms of one food is going to fill their cup more then another type. Eg their lab food is a big light-ish kibble with a hole thru the middle where as their 4400 is a smaller flat dense kibble - if you filled a normal cup with it you are going are going to get differing weights 'per cup' of each.
  2. All can depend on what causes the allergy for your dog... Perhaps switch foods for a bit to see if the issues continue or not? A couple of good foods to try are Royal Canin GSD, Royal Canin Sensitive (can't remember if that's the name of it!), Proplan Sensitive (Salmon), Proplan turkey, Advance turkey, Euk Lamb and rice.
  3. Are you using a normal food measuring cup to measure...or the RC measuring cup? But in general much will depend on how much exercise they get (should list with a couple of exercise levels as well) and how the metabolise their food. But usually the guide on the bag is more they need...lol. Also it does work out cheaper to buy the bigger bag...it's a larger outlay but per KG it's cheaper And nab one of the frequent purchaser cards to go with it.
  4. The same could be said of GSD pups My Sabre came very close to being a nice bathmat a few times
  5. Not necessarily a surprise...can also depend on where you live and what you have access to. Could be they have food delivered and it hasn't arrived by the expected date - or they miscalulated what was in the freezer when they arranged the delivery date. Could be the bag of food that the OH was supposed to pick up and put in the cupboard wasn't picked up and they forgot to mention it. It's no biggie really...i'd just have left my dogs with a no food day...but my dogs get that occasionally.
  6. So...MDL...what did you end up giving the pooch last night?? ;)
  7. By the sounds of it...he's been demanding 24/7 attention...and perhaps getting it? At least during waking hours? remember any attention is still attention in his mind - good or bad. The only problem with things like water spray etc...is that you have to have it with you - toys can even be a scrap of something, whatever - however your 'attention' is with you always...and can be taken off of the dog easily no matter where you are.
  8. No one training technique will work for every single dog...much depends on why your pup is biting, what they get out of it, and what they have gotten out of it in the past. Find what works for you and the pup and be consistant ;)
  9. My GSD's want my attention above all else - what i did with the biting was if they bit me or my clothes i would immediately stop what i was doing - eg playing with them/paying them attention. I'd then get something appropriate for them to chew on and give them that ...if they took it lots of praise - if they went to bite me again i would ignore them for a smidge then offer the toy - again lots of praise if they took it and then we would play again. My older boy Bronx was more receptive to it...Sabre would wait for his chance and nip my butt Unfortunately i couldn't help but laugh which encouraged the behaviour But i got him out of doing that to me...now it's a matter of him not doing it to my OH and others ;) Sabre is much more play focused then Bronx is...Bronx is food focused instead ETA - all dogs are different...but the trick is being consistant...firm but fair and all that With him getting more excited...then stand up and ignore him - no eye contact, no noise no nothing...or get up and walk away which ever is easier for you - take away from him what he is after - your attention. GSD's are more people orientated then many think they are...but removingtheir persons attention because of the dogs actions is a very effective 'punishment' for them - and they learn quickly. Unless you have a dog like my Sabre who then chucks a tantie - mind you i ignore those as well
  10. I'm not sure that BL was targetting you with that info....but it's good for people to read. And a lot of people do read these threads without ever becoming a member of DOL - and it's great info for them to come across. I've spoken to oodles of people about dog choices...and so many of them say Lab - until i tell them about Labs ;) (I grew up with them). And usually the response is "but they are supposed to be well behaved easy dogs" - i usually reply that they can be...with effort from the owners I love labs...and they are seriously wonderful dogs...but there is a reason why i have GSD's now Perceptions of dogs are amazing...eg Greyhounds must have lots of excersise - not so true, Labs are guide dogs so they must all be calm and well behaved - also not so true I'm glad that you went into the purchase of a Lab with your eyes open and knowledge of what you are in for (so many don't - lets face it...Lab pups are amongst the cutest in the world!)...and looking forward to it as well - bodes well for your future happy doggy fun filled life
  11. I'd probably work on the giving him something else to chew on idea - eg say no, take your hand out of his mouth then give him a toy and tell him he is a good boy. Depending on what you want to do with him in the future you don't want to chase out all desire to hold stuff in his mouth - and doing so would stress him as Labs loooove to retrieve stuff...toys, socks, undies, you, etc ;)
  12. Make up rice in chicken or beef stock with some frozen vegies - unsalted stock if you have it...otherwise whatever you have - and mix a raw egg thru...shell and all. Mind you...they can go for a night without food...it won't hurt them - however they could haunt your every move and cry until you feed them if they aren't used to it
  13. A good wash for the eyes is either cool black tea or cool chamomile tea...jsut make it up as you would for a cuppa and let it cool down - then use as an eye wash. As for the nose...it could be that the grass seeds or pollens are irritating him? But then the antihistamines will make a noticible difference. As to teh scabs on the nose...perhaps check out where he has been digging eg for ants, or roots in the ground as he could have scratched himself as much as bitten bitten. Could also be flies? they tend to bite the nose and ear tips - so check them for crusty bits. (The best thing i have found for the flies is Advantix - lasts for about 6-8 weeks or so - doesn't make the ear fur go manky like a lot of hte stuff i've tried and you don't have to put stuff on a few times a day to work) Good luck with finding out the issue!

    Few Questions

As to lifting the leg...it depends...lmao...some dogs do...some don't...some do if they feel like it but not all the time and i've known dogs to not lift until they are 2yrs old...so...depends on the dog
  15. You think it smells going in....it smells much worse coming back out! The only tin food I ever use for the dogs is Natures Gift.
  16. Yup...pet cafe's usually do sell them in a smaller bag 'home made' bags You can also usually get a 'mix' which will have a variety of kibble thru it cheap as well. Which PetCafe were you looking at going to?
  17. Give them honey thru the day and use the cough mixture at night...it doesn't quicken the time of it...but it eases the coughing...so you can sleep as well as them!
  18. Hehehehehe...i know my GSD's are boys...but...lamb shanks don't last long...perhaps around 15mins?? More if frozen...lol
  19. 2nd-ing what Wolfgirl said  This is what i've done with my GSD's
  20. You'll probably find that PurinaOne and Optimum work out at about $15-$20 less per 15kg's then Euk etc - Bonnie Working dog and Cobber are quite respectable foods and are both cheaper then supercoat...but in my opinion much better. However you can't get them from the supermarkets - but your local produce type store will stock them. Chook frames are quite cheap and you can often pick up pig feet/hocks, turkey necks etc quite cheap depending on the size of yours dogs and how much they need per meal etc.
  21. It's a dominance thing more then a sexual thing She's telling the pup that she is the boss in the nicest way possible ETA - Nicest as in non aggressively
  22. I just with they'd let staff do this as well I get cranky each year as i can enter pretty much all the rest of it...but can't do the dog stuff!
  23. I work on the idea of...if they are going to get it they are going to get it. Especially since dogs are contagious before, during and after symptoms are seen.
  24. If it's stinky then it could be infection...however it's likely just to be just the normal stuff - smegma i think it's called. Very common especially after they've been showing off the lipstick and all is withdrawn back into the sheath. And don't worry...there have been numerous threads about this very topic
  25. There are a number of the in QLD - i'd be curious if Council is liable for any injuries that could happen due to uneducated use of the equipment etc Not to mention if a dog is going over the equipment and another dog rushes in and they collide, or same bit of equipment is accidently used by different dogs at the same time causing injuries or fear of said equipment etc So far have seen weave poles, see-saws, tunnels, jumps, tables, hoops, bridges etc.
