The Official January Photo A Day Challenge
kja replied to Ashanali's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
Wow, some great stuff here again today! Clicking - I love that shot of Chester Here's mine ... a quickie of my brand spanking new cold weather jacket that arrived today. It ain't art, just a snippet of my day. Only 9 days until I am off on my adventure! It was too funny trying this sub zero jacket on in our 43C degree heat today -

Thanks I had the logo portion created over at designoutpost.com and have since modified it after living with it for a while. I like it a lot now and think it works pretty well for both branches of my photography. I made the watermark bar in photoshop using the logo and some text. It's now an action in Photoshop so I can batch a whole folder or do individual shots and I've made it a droplet in Lightroom so I can do the same all in one click without having to open photoshop myself at all. -
The Official January Photo A Day Challenge

Wow! Four pages already! I just got home so will have to have a look at all of the images properly tomorrow. Here's two from me: Underwater and Dora at the beach waiting for Tilly to charge her -
Not silly at all. Right click the photos and check under the Advanced settings tab. If the EXIF hasn't been stripped you should see all the info on the photo. If the EXIF has been stripped (it gets stripped when you use Save for Web in Photoshop, for example) then you'll be out of luck ;) There are EXIF readers on the web that you can download, too. I haven't used any, too lazy to deal with it, but it sounds kinda cool. These will let you see what settings etc other people used on images posted on the web.

I uploaded some photos to my flickr account just to check things out. I have no idea how to let people know where they are or how they can look at my flickr stuff and I can't figure out how to grab the img code for images without clicking each individual one and getting it that way. In photobucket the codes are all under the thumbnail images, which is must faster! Ugh...maybe I haven't found the right solution yet. help please?

Why can't you have folders called "lions"? I have "puppies", "underwater", "land" (talk about a jumble of stuff!) etc ... Do you have a vision of how you would like things organized?
-
I would get something that has a nice big lcd screen and adequately large buttons as some of the very small cameras can be a pain to work. Any of the major players have good offerings for what you need and virtually every compact/point&shoot camera out there has a "set it and forget it" mode (P or Auto or the green box etc, depending on the model). I love the Canon range, but the Casios are quite nice, too. I find my Casio is easier for my own Grandmother to use as it has a bigger screen and a bigger shutter button. Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji ... can't go too wrong!

Here's a bird that was on the boat ramp when we got back from our dive the other day. His leg is all busted up, but didn't seem to phase him too much. Have no clue what he is. Taken with my crappy baby Olympus 720SW

I dunno where to start...I'm a bit the same way since the crash and backing up to what seems like 20 different places and trying to double check things! Here's what I'm doing...I'm importing the photos at their own location in LR and then adding keywords etc. there. As long as the folder structure remains the same, I will be able to find things again. If I change the folder structure, I can hit the ? button and point LR to the right place. So far it's saved my bacon a couple of times since the crash. As for where to start with folders themselves, I did things in date order ... the oldest stuff first. I think anywhere you start is a good place coz that always seems to be the hardest thing for me! I even got carried away with some folders and deleted stuff that I knew in my heart I'd never bother with but just hadn't taken the time to deal with ...

Love the action shot!! Hehehe, I figured, but both lenses give pretty much similar results after you leave their maximum apertures so I thought it would be a good excuse for me to play wide open since usually I'm too lazy and set something that gives me more depth of field (read - more room for a wee focusing miss ! )
-
Awesome!!! Have fun!!
-
Awww, look at these guys! Too beautiful all of them - and I thought *I* had the most beautiful doggies...turns out we ALL do! Thanks, Clicking...it's great to get feedback on what you like! I love playing around and as the colour versions don't add a thing, imho, I've been wandering around in Split Toning World Here's a couple more...not at 1.4 but still with the 50mm 1.4 lens. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 -
-
Woohoooo!!! Enjoy your new toys!
-
You shamed me into it ... here are a few from today with my 50 1.4, all shot at 1.4. There are others with other apertures on my blog (linky's in my sig) 1 - Dora with her new football 2 - Til biding her time so she can get the ball 3 - Til beginning destruction 4 - Dora pleading for me to save the new toy

Chezzy - I'm pretty sure Canon makes a housing. It will be a WP model. Perfect for snorkelling, splashing water, inclement weather and if you ever decide, diving, too. It's the only option I'd consider coz the other option really is that plastic baggie. I've got the Olympus SW 720, two friends have the 770 and one has the 1030. I use mine on the beach with the dogs coz Tilly can't hurt it. Image quality across the range is not on par with the Canon offerings (or the Fujis, which are really good, as are the Panasonics, though there aren't many housing options for the Panas). The Olympus SW series has focus issues...even in good light, high contrast, no movement situations. But they are rugged. I wouldn't buy another one just yet...maybe they will address the negatives in the next release, one can hope. To me, they're an <meh> OK camera, but for the same money one can do much better.
-
Noooo, run very fast from the baggie. Unless you don't really care if you flood your camera, then it's worth the punt, I guess. Defo snorkelling only. One problem with the baggies if they don't leak is that when you dive down, even snorkelling, the bag can depress onto the buttons and it will make them virtually impossible to use. Seems like throwing $100 away on a chance, especially if you're going on holidays, but each to their own. I'd rather spend a bit more and know it's going to work, know I'm going to bring home some OK results and be fairly confident that unless I do something stupid, my camera will not become a salt water logged paperweight.

Ooo, pick me pick me! I have, use and see a variety of underwater systems :D IMHO you cannot go past the canon offerings...and there are three options: SD/Ixus series with Canon WP housing ... if you just want to putter. Some of them have manual white balance control, I think. Manual white balance is essential if you are not going to spring for a strobe, too. A series. My personal choice. Small, easy, AA batteries, excellent images, easy to get the hang of, variety of auto modes and full manual control if you want it. RAW hacks are also available which is awesome for underwater. Canon housing for these, too. G series ... G9 or G10. Both are great cameras. RAW, full manual or auto modes. G10 is wider natively so that is a good thing underwater; G9 has a wider zoom range which many find more useful on land. Both of these are bulkier and more expensive than either of the first two choices. IF you don't mind the extra size and extra cash, excellent choices. I do not like: Sea&Sea, SeaLife or Olympus SW series. The image quality when compared to what I consistently see from the Canon A series just even isn't in the ballpark. You can use the internal flash effectively as long as you use it within its limitations. In macro mode, at your closest focus distance, internal turned down one click (on the A series)...sweet

You guys are rocking the 50s!! I've been bad and haven't been using mine at all lately ... of course, I haven't been using many of my lenses lately LOL Not doing anything this arvo, maybe I'll pop it on (though I really should pop on the brand new lens I bought a couple of weeks ago and have shot exactly three frames with!)
-
I think I will recognize my own work most of the time no matter how much time has passed, but I know that my people stuff has changed and my PP wanders all over the place right now...I go with my gut instead of with a dedicated way of processing. I see quite a few photographers that do have a definite style, though they also have variances...I can pick 'em out at 50 paces. I might be at that place one day...as long as I stay fresh and happy with myself, I'll be happy! I like to try new things and I love to see some of my favourite photographers do the same thing, even when they already have fabulous styles!
-
What a great thread! I don't have a particular style yet as I am constantly evolving (or some days de-evolving). When I shoot for a client, my style is what I believe will make them happy ... it isn't about me. They have hired me because of what they have seen and although some of my work may have a common thread, each time I do a client shoot, I try new things, too. When I shoot for fun, it's all about me and right now I'm just trying everything and everything some more!
-
First, it is an interesting shot. Well done! Second, parents will often react most strongly to an image they identify with rather than one that is "technically" or "artistically" more correct. Just go with it and enjoy The point, if you aren't just shooting for yourself, is to make your viewer happy. If you have done that, then don't sweat anything else for that image ... take the advice and constructive criticism you receive about a particular image and maybe apply it next time, just to have options. There is more than one way to skin a cat and you will never please everyone - so experiment and learn what pleases you. I like the original and I like the crop version. I'd probably play with it a bit more and make it even more "pre-teen boy" ... but I might end up liking the orignal the best anyway! Yes, I'd love to see some versions with his eyes
-
Unfortunately, I think from the shutter making the funky noise that sending it to Canon was the likely end result Hopefully they'll be fast. They did a great job - and fast - with the lens I had to send back a while back.
-
Woohooo!!! It's a beautiful camera Have fun!!
-
The 40D is a great camera. For the price difference, I would still pick up another 40D versus the 50D. If it were only $100-$200 maybe I'd go the 50D, but for my shooting needs, the 40D works perfectly well (and actually does better where I need it, in the highlights).

Ahh, the good ol, Err99! Yes, I've gotten Err99 on a few different occasions and it's always something new This is what I would try: - remove BOTH batteries. Including the small one. Leave it for a few minutes. Reinstall batteries. If still Err99 - try a different main battery. I had one wonky battery that didn't play nicely with one of my 40Ds. Works perfectly fine in my other two cameras so I have no idea what the problem is. But changing to a different battery solved the problem. If still Err99 - try your lens on manual focus. Will it take a photo? If yes, change lens to AF and see if it works. If still Err99 - you need to take it in My biggest concern for you is the funny sounding shutter. I just had a shutter go kaput at me at the last wedding (thank god for backups!). It made a very bad noise indeed! It's now off to Canon for repair, still under warranty.
