  1. Yes, but now the 1D series has crept back on to the radar, too LOL However does one choose between all the very cool toys available?
  2. Here's two more for dance...these were taken in January but I didn't get a chance to add them to my shot a day, so here they are Montevideo...practicing for Carnival Buenos Aires...Tango dancers
  3. You'll love the 10-20! I had it and adored it, now have the Canon 10-22 because the Sigma swam with the fishes and insurance covered the changeover. It's an awesome range (I also have the Tokina 11-16 2.8) - so much fun and way more versatile than one imagines at first!
  4. Can you use a flash? Adding an external flash and bits might be the ticket if you have some control of the area you will be shooting in. Takes practice to not get that total "flashed" look, but it is definitely another option if it's allowed. Outside is great if you can!
  5. Sorry! Lenses that have a wide aperture - so they let in more light. They are typically heavier, have wider front elements (the front part) and are more expensive than standard kit or zoom lenses. The closer to 1 the number, the faster the glass is. Don't faint from sticker shock They allow you to shoot in darker conditions. The tradeoff is a shallower depth of field though. Tamron and Tokina and Sigma make very good versions of fast glass that are less expensive than Nikon's offerings so you might want to check them out, too. IS is image stabilization ... I can't remember what Nikon calls it (VR maybe?). I'm not very well versed in Nikon offerings so can't point you to specifics.
  6. me, too ...and their service is fabulous in at least two countries
  7. Fast glass Look for lenses with 2.8 at least - 1.8, 1.4, 1.2 etc are even better. You'll have a really shallow DOF though IS will also buy you some wiggle room.
  8. Thanks, Rocco I won't join the Nik Canon debate - both produce great systems and you can't go too wrong so just jump in!
  9. Great stuff, keep it coming! The poll is oh so close right now - vote even if you don't comment
  10. There are some great shots here - awesome job, Guys! I haven't been able to get through the whole thing yet, but I will! I'm adding this one - I shot it in February and I was thinking about the daily challenge even while I was away and I'm late to the party and I don't really know any kids, so I'm counting it Child one down, 26 left to go?
  11. I'm tossing up whether or not to add a Canon 5D II to my lineup. Why? I dunno, I'm intrigued with it, I guess. I love it's high ISO/low light abilities. I have no particular burning interest in full frame per se. It's just a tool to me. Do I *need* one? Not really. Would it make some things easier? Sure it would and I would use what it has to offer. Will my photography suck without it? Probably no more than my photography sucks now  I have the cash, but it means I wouldn't be able to spend it on something else should it catch my eye down the line. I can't see that I need to add any lenses right now (OK, the 135 f2.0 is really calling my name ... especially if I get the FF camera). Canon's prices are going up in Australia come early March - prepare for a 10-30% increase across the dslr line - so if I'm going to do it, now kinda makes sense from a strict dollar point of view. So why the wishy washiness? probably because I know I don't need it. I'll be tempted to then try to find another 5Gs to buy the underwater housing for it LOL I don't know if I'll have enough "business" this year to fully justify the cost and I don't think it will actually add it's value to my business ... I do just fine with my current set up, I believe. Sigh, I don't know ... to pull the trigger or not. So jump in with anything that springs to mind...anything at all. I want to hear.
  12. OK, I'm just back ... are we not doing a photo a day anymore?
  13. Can you post it so we can see?
  14. I think you will be happy with any of the big players. I probably wouldn't consider a Sony for myself as they do not have the lineup of lenses and other bits and bobs (like underwater housings etc) that I need but if you have looked at their offerings and see what you need, go for it. They are a good solid company and their cameras/lenses are just fine As for courses, it's hard to recommend one as they are so very different and it can often come down to the instructor and how tailored the course can be to each student's needs. I would start simply by having a browse through your user manual and start pushing buttons. Find a Sony forum for specific Sony questions and check out some of the web forums for photography for general stuffs - often there are a group of pissants on a forum, but *most* members are very helpful. wwwthephotoforum.com isn't a bad one to check out. You can also pop questions up here - we're a small photo community, but there is a lot of great advice & many opinions to go through! Have fun!
  15. I'm so going to miss checking in and seeing all these great shots each day! I have my last one before my holiday...I only got one frame as hubby moaned and rolled over, disturbing them. Lobo and Til wasted no time taking over the bed when I got up this morning. I can't believe Lobo lets Til sleep with her head on his tummy like he does...it weighs a ton (which is surprising since it seems so empty!) With the baby Oly 720SW Keep shooting and I will check in when I can!
  16. My older underwater stuff is here -> www.oceansbyanderson.com ... it will be completely updated in early March My day to day life & photos (lots of doggies) is here -> www.kristinsnews.blogspot.com My working photography site is -> www.kjaphotos.com ... also getting a change in early March; the blog for it is www.kjaphotos.blogspot.com & often has extra bits I'm just off on my big adventure and both blogs will be getting updates when I can. Check www.kristinsnews.blogspot.com first as this will be the first one updated since my friends and family check it more often forgot fllickr where there's just photos and no chatter ... KristinAnderson (sorry, still don't know how to link!)
  17. wow, cool shots and edits!! Running behind doesn't really sum things up today but at least I have the urgent things taken care of before my trip. Today's photo is sad sad sad...happy snappie of round one of packing...that's our queen sized bed under all of that! Skywest's 20kgs is a fantasy, I know...
  18. Yup, you can "gel" your flash on the cheap with anything of colour! Very cool effect and a good reminder/lesson for the rest of us I am going to miss all of you guys and this thread while I am away...but I'll be having a good time and will raise a glass of South American wine to you each evening You'll be almost as sick of penguin and ice shots as you already are of my pups, cats and uw adventures LOL But I still have two more days to look and post so I'm going to make the most of them ... bring on the photos, you lurkers! I know you're out there!
  19. Rocco - thanks for the kind words! I'm loving the retro thing you have going on and I'm sure going to miss this thread come Sunday when I won't be able to check it again! Popsicle - jump right on in with any ol shot, we love to see I've done laundry and lizards and doggies and kitties...just whatever happens to be around the house when I have a minute (or create a minute) to shoot something. Some folks are taking a fresh look at their gardens - plants are always cool and they sit still! join in!!
  20. PPS - nice building shot! A trio from me today...first one is a gift from one of the kitties Then Tilly was out flinging this poor little guy all over the patio. I thought he was dead at first, but turns out he was just faking it so he could run away once she lost interest. I didn't realise he was alive until he opened his mouth!
