thanks for the link! With the dollar so very high, I'd still be checking US sites - B&H is still kicking the ones I cross-checked in the teeth price-wise, even with shipping. So saying, I have dealt with photo continental and they are very good. I'd certainly use them again if they were competitive.

How is the real life low light and high ISO performance? I've only read reviews - be good to have info from real world users.

Yup, my SD1200 IS (also known as the Ixus range) goes everywhere - it's so teensy and does a fantastic job for what I want it to do
-
I haven't fully decided yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to simply do 52 Weeks of My Pets - some weeks that might be two or more together, some weeks it might be an individual, some weeks I might get overly ambitious and shoot all five! I am going to commit to a photo a week, though...just not 100% on the actual subject LOL

Too big and bulky for me - if I am going to have a go everywhere camera it needs to slip into my pocket really. But from everything I've heard about this model, it's a winner

I have a slingshot, too, but these were two others. the one with the extra pocket I was talking about also has a slot for the laptop - forgot that!

I have two Canon backpacks that were inexpensive and have lasted for years. Super comfy and not expensive I have two different Lowepro backpacks but the one I use the most is the flipside. the zippers are in the back making it very safe when you are out and about and if you hook the waist strap up it sits open like a table so you don't have to put it down to change lenses or get stuff out. the other lowepro is ... hmm ... can't remember the name. But it has a side opening so you can leave it on your back, unzip the side entry and pull the camera out. Pretty neat. And it has a separate compartment on the top for all your other goodies.

We could always have two threads: one dedicated to the same dog, 52 week = the pure thread and one for those who are committing to a photo a week of a particular theme that isn't the same dog for the 52 weeks = the unpure thread but as long as we don't have to do the flickr thing as I know that's not going to happen for me!

I'm not a flickr user really (I know, I know, I'm so very unhip and uncool) so will you/we be posting here, too? I'd like to do a 52 project but mine is most likely going to be a 52 weeks of my pets since I have five I'm not sure I want to narrow it to just one of them Perhaps I would be welcome here? I understand if you want to keep things "pure" though!

Yes, use the flash if you want to see their faces :p It's called fill flash. I use it a lot at the beach with the doglets so I don't get really dark shadows on their faces, for instance. Or you can put your exposure selection on spot and set that on the faces (if your camera has this feature). This will expose for the subjects dark face. Remember that doing this will blow the background as it is already bright and you are telling the camera to expose for the dark areas. I can do this with my baby Canon SD1200 - I just put the focus box over the part of the scene I want to expose for and then move the camera to reframe the scene the way I want it to be. Note that you need to make sure your subject is on the same focus plane as what you focused on! If your camera will let you, try lowering the power on the flash if it is frying everything you are trying to shoot. If not, then back up a bit so your light has to travel further and is less intense when it hits your subject. It's tough to balance exposures with a point & shoot that has limited adjustments and with a fixed flash, but it can be done. Just takes some experimenting and practice. The only way to prevent red eye is to not have the flash go straight into the eye, really. It's a bear with pets as there's no good way to remove it once it's there. Experiment with angles and I've also heard that a piece of the kinda cloudy sticky tape will diffuse the flash just enough and still give you the power you need, but I haven't tried that.

How much fun are they having!! I doubt my Girls would have a clue what to do with bubbles LOL I love your action shots - their little faces are too cute!

Now that's an excellent present! Have fun!

Practice practice practice. And remember to take more than one frame if you are shooting wide open or almost wide open. That depth of field is a biatch. Check out this Depth of Field calculator - it's a little shocking when you do the math Just keep at it - you'll get there. And not every shot has to be shot wide open, stopping down a bit can still give you the nice isolation but make your life easier.
-
Shooting a fast lens wide open takes practice. Be patient and keep shooting. Accept that you will always toss frames when you shoot wide open, it's the nature of the beast. Never shoot just a single frame. The depth of field (what's in focus) is VERY VERY narrow. It can be difference between the rim of the eyelid and the eyeball itself. Stop down to 2.2 - you won't lose much and you might find it gives you just enough leeway to nail the focus. And keep practicing - once you get 1.8, you'll love it.

Momento. Clickon Print. Redbubble.

I shouldn't have gone back and looked again - I like so many of them but I'm trying to resist.

Love these! Such lovely shots and such variety - well done! And I totally love that you all are keeping to the three! It's so easy to "cheat" and not narrow it down and just put up a whole bunch. huga - love the pug in the suitcase

Tell Me Where You Buy Your Gear. Time For A New Toy :)
kja replied to becandcharch's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
congrats on the new toy!! -
Often, with the price savings even if you aren't covered with a "grey" market item what you saved on the initial purchase will cover any service you may actually want done. And your insurance would cover the rest.

Silly puppeh! Mine are so spoiled sookie lalas that they won't even go out in the rain. They stand at the door and look back at me all forlorn. I virtually have to force Tilly out to pee - and then she does the lightning fast squat, pee, run back to the house while still kind of squatting and peeing...she's pathetic!
-
That sucks! I have no idea what a screen costs to replace, but do contact Canon to find out. Hope you get something sorted quickly!

Surprisingly, even though it's usually hot here, both girls do like a blankie snuggle. Though sometimes just the nose and a leg will do
-
LOL you need to shop elsewhere - only 6Gs from B&H you can almost have two!
