  4. And she was loved by many She was truly a Heavenly Dog, that was always happy I miss you so very much my Gorgeous Girl. You were the life of this house hold, the gentle leader, the creator of much noisy fun first thing in the morning and so many laughs, the instigator of many rituals like taking out the bins and conning biscuits out of the neighbours in exchange for doing theirs. You will be home soon where you belong with us and then true peace will descend on our home once again. Until we meet again at the Rainbow Bridge. Travel safely. Enjoy the warmth, the water and the toys. Be kind to your brother and sister and look after your niece and nephews until we are all together again.

  10. tdierikx of course they love to give kisses to strangers. Don't all well socialised and trained Rotties :D
  11. Absolutely stupid Dyz. Of course I want to have my dogs attack another dog, incur large vet bills to treat them, ruin 3 years of intensive training with Dee and then defend a dangerous dog order for both dogs. Not bloody likely
  12. Walking my dogs on leash and under control, down a public road, when a GSD x rushes out of a property, hackles raised, barking and snarling. I ask the owner to contain his dog, yet again, and his reply: "Why don't you let your dogs teach him a lesson?" Seriously.
  13. What do you mean Molly is not a Rottweiler I do think that it is time for Miss Naughty Nova to be updated in your siggie don't you???
  14. They tend to have that effect on people. Something to do with the leaning on people while smiling like a spaced out clown
  15. As a kid we had a Doberman and then I owned a GSD x Lab who travelled with me through my teenage years and kept me sane. She was the best dog who went everywhere with me and was the first to ride in my car when I got my P plates :D When she passed away, due to old age, I was given my first Rottweiler by a friend. Yes a BYB dog but I have since learnt. Sam introduced me to the sport of obedience, even if we never got out of Class 4. Sam as a puppy Sam just before he was PTS due to really bad arthritis I waited 3 years for my first pedigree Rottweiler to come along and so started a fantastic friendship with her breeder and my everlasting love of the breed. Baylee arrived whilst Sam was in his older years. Puppy Baylee Sam and Baylee Baylee introduced me to the thrill of Obedience trialling and the heartache of showing. She broke a seasmoid bone as a puppy which affected her gait I now am owned by her niece and nephew, Dee and Zeph, who have taught me so much about training and dog behaviour. They have introduced me to the sport of herding and tracking. They have taught me patience and persistence. They have taught me to laugh at myself and that there is always another trial. They keep me fit and sane. They give great cuddles and constantly keep me amused. Dee Zeph I love the Rottweiler because they are versatile, loyal, entertaining, challenging and more cuddly than Dobermans. :D I cannot see myself changing to another breed.
  16. There are programs run in Vic, NSW and SA covering exactly this for both pre-school kids and their parents and primary school kids. http://www.pets.info.vic.gov.au/ http://www.pets.nsw.gov.au/ http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/248905-parents-teaching-their-children-how-to-approach-dogs/
  17. I got asked if my Flat Coat was a staffy. TWICE. Sure guys. Same same...? Lol, I'm half expecting someone to have a story about the time someone thought their dog was zebra. She is. See :D
  18. Just like you Remarkabull my girl Dee was attacked three times by off lead dogs that were free to roam from their houses. The dogs were predominantly smaller terrier type dogs as well as a Lab x. She was between the ages of 7 and 13 months. The third attack I had her collar so tight that her front feet were off the ground in an attempt to prevent her from biting the attacking dogs. There were three smaller dogs and the Lab x. I was spinning her around in an effort to stop the other dogs biting her. Once the owner finally came out of his house to round up his dogs we stopped spinning, and poor Dee threw up all over me. Consequently she became reactive. For the next 8 months I was so hyper vigilant on our walks that neither of us enjoyed them. I had no confidence in myself to keep her safe and she had no confidence in me. So for the sake of both our quality of life we started back at obedience training to reduce her critical distance and reactivity to dogs that were barking and lunging at her. This helped to restore my confidence as a competent handler and Dee's confidence in me to keep her safe so that she did not have to react. We also kept walking around the neighbourhood remaining calm as we went past barking off lead dogs. Of all sizes. I quickly learnt that the more reactive I got, the more reactive she got and therefore the more reactive the off lead dogs got. So when the roaming terrier dogs and currently the Shepherd x come out and bark at us I get Dee to heal closely and to calmly walk on. Do I hate off lead dogs, hell yes. Do I hate small terrier type dogs? No. Their inconsiderate owners are another story. Do I walk the streets and go to obedience armed to the teeth in case off lead dogs approach us. No. Why? Because I need one hand free to pick up poo and carry the bag. Also it means that I go out on a walk ready to fight instead of relaxing. Do I watch for off lead dogs? Hell yes. But I remain calm and walk on with Dee calmly by my side on the far side of the road. So maybe Trudy08 all that energy that you have in the form of anger and rage could be used is a positive way like a dog sport to increase your confidence and lessen the trauma?
  19. Another consideration is if the pets also pass away during the accident, try to organise for the pets to be taken to the local vets so that the NOK can decide what to do with the remains. We attended one fatal car accident where the owner and the dog passed away. I took the dog to the local vets where the NOK were able to collect him. They had his ashes buried with his owner as their bond was that strong. The NOK were so grateful that they were still together at peace. It helped their grieving greatly.
  20. May I suggest Dynamic Lifter/blood and bone has been applied to one of the neighbours' gardens and the smell is wafting over your place. A bit of rain and it will be gone in a few days.
  21. kirty, the way I have reduced my anxiety about being attacked whilst walking my dogs (one reactive, the other not) is by keeping to familiar routes, where I know all the dogs and whether they are adequately contained or not. I avoid areas where I know the owners don't contain their dogs. I have spoken to two owners about containing their dog, instead of going straight to council, and we have worked out an arrangement that they have their dog on lead whilst out in public (their dog ran out of the beer garden at the local pub and attacked us in the main street twice) and they contain their dog during the times that I am likely to walk by with my dogs. It is not perfect but at least I can walk that way and mostly not get harassed. I do not walk the local streets at popular times (weekends and after school), instead I drive to more isolated walks where all I have to contend with are rabbits and wombats. When we do encounter roaming dogs I maintain distance, remain calm and tell the dogs to "walk on" in a quiet firm voice. The calmer I am and the fact that we continue to walk, if possible, the calmer the dogs are. I am vigilant, especially on sunny days when people and their dogs are out, but I have learnt to plan ahead and breathe. I am also very wary of off lead areas because some people do not see a problem with allowing their dogs to approach three Rottweilers that are on lead
  22. Dried liver or liver bread, BBQ or roast chicken, left over roast beef, chicken sausages are also a huge favourite. All of these are used in high distraction situations or if I am teaching something entirely new. However, more and more it is the isqueak or Cuz that is desired by Dee and Zeph is shifting from the balls to food, which is strange as he has never been food motivated and is very fussy.
  23. Yes, they have tried and tested many different breeds in police and protection roles to make comparisons so perhaps finish the story by telling us why they didn't continue with those breeds in the mainstream roles..........in fact, the only breed that has ever replaced the GSD in police/protection roles is the Belgian Malinois.......no formal K9 units have replaced herding breeds with Bull breeds which for the most part is down to versatility trainability and consistency in working aptitude. The Rottweiler is a usable breed however lacks endurance over the herding breeds, the Doberman like the Giant Schnauzer lack in bloodlines producing required traits and character..........the rest are not even close, fact :D Rottweilers are a herding breed. They were originally bred to herd the Romans' cattle as they invaded countries to ensure their armies were fed. Then they herded cattle to market and carted the meat to town to sell it.
