  1. Day 3 I put obi into his crate at 1.30am this morning before I went to bed. I woke up at 7am and he was awake when he heard sounds in the bedroom. I opened the gate and wanted to let him out to pee and to play but he ignored me and went back to sleep. He's been in the crate for about 6 hours now. Is it ok if he prefers to remain in the crate? Or do I have to carry him out to go toilet then put him back in if he wants to be in his crate?
  2. I've noticed that whenever I take Obi for walks, he's always eating grass. I've tried saying a firm "NO" and he would stop for a while, and I give him a treat when he stops. After that he starts to eat grass again. Is this normal? How do I get him to stop eating grass?

    Cutting Nails

Obi's nails on the front paws were 'filed' as he always scratches the concrete floor on the balcony but the nails on her dew claws are very long and sharp and I often get scratched while playing with him. Now I always wear long sleeves when I play with him Does anyone know if the vet would cut it for me since his 3rd vaccination is coming up soon, or do i have to take him to a groomer. I don't mind paying for them to be cut and slowly learn how to do it. I'm a first time dog owner, so I dont think i can attempt this task as yet.
  4. Day 2: I woke up this morning to find obi awake. I thought of taking him out for a walk but he ignored me and went back to sleep! 2 hours later, he woke up. I walked out of the room and he barked once. I was thinking if he wanted to go to the toilet or he wants me to be near the crate. I waited for a while, no further barks from him and I walked back into the room and praised him. I let him out and took him into the laundry room to pee. He didnt pee so I took his lead and took him out. The walk to the park is about 5mins and he pee on the concrete sidewalk on the way to the park. I played with him in the park and did some training to get him to 'stay' and 'heel' etc. I tried to get him to poo but not successful. After an hour, I took him home and I brought him straight into the laundry room to pee. He didnt pee so I played with him for a while and took him to his crate and give him his fav chewing bone. He fell asleep in less than 5 min!! I'm also trying to feed him at the same feeding time everyday as previous we do not have any fixed time to feed him. I'm also making a record of his pee and poo time (sorry if this sounds silly  but i read in an article that if i am consistent with my feeding time, obi's pee and poo time would be consistent too) So far, his first pee time of the day is within half hour range.... i will monitor and update how I go with Obi's crate training in this forum for the benefit of others who are also going to crate train their puppy. I would highly recommend crate training. Initially my partner thinks it's cruel to put obi in a crate. But now, seeing that oni barks less in the house and we could do things in our rooms without worrying for his safety or if he pee or poo on the carpet, my partner is very supportive of me crate training obi now... The only thing we are trying to work out now how to get obi to pee on command when he's out of the crate. Cos most of the time he does not pee once he gets out. It takes a while, so we play with him and then take him to toilet again every 5 min.
  5. Thanks for all your replies. I feel so encouraged now... the past few weeks were very stressful as we have to constantly keep watch on him and felt so frustrated everytime he pees on the carpet. Seagate, you're right in saying that the key is waiting for it to happen. 'Cos often, even when we let him out of the crate, he does not pee sometimes. We'll have to play with him for a while and then take him to pee again and during this period of time, he may hv a miss. So, we will have to be watchful over him. But we are delighted that he loves his crate. We gave him his Christmas present an hour ago and he played with his Santa soft toy, running laps around the apartment and then retreated to his crate by himself. When we first bought the crate, we only put cushion and a blanket in it and used a carton box to block the excess space as the crate was a little too big. We started to introduce him to go into the crate by giving him treats and toys to play. Initially, he was ok to go into the crate but does not stay in there for long and would bark. Then last night i thought that maybe it'd be a good idea to put his doggy bed in the crate instead and let him sleep in the crate. The doggy bed fits perfectly into the crate and there was no need for the carton box to block the excess space. I guess Obi finds it more cosy too. We were surprised at first when he didn't bark or whine and fell asleep almost immediately.
  6. Eventually I would prefer Obi to pee and poo outside when I take him out for walks as we live in an apartment. So far, I have tried giving him the command 'toilet' (that's what I use to get him to pee on the training pad in the laundry room) when we are outside but he didnt pee. He does it when he comes home. He just poo on the concrete sidewalk on the way to the park just now and I forgot to give him the command when he does it Should I use different command for pee and poo? Or is it ok to use the command 'toilet' for both?
  7. Phew... good to know that it's normal for him to sleep everytime he's in there. I am actually crate training him in hope that he will housebreak sooner. We live in an apartment, so the laundry room is where obi goes to toilet. He does it correctly sometimes, but other times he refuse to pee in the toilet and the moment we let him out, he will pee on the carpet. He refuses to poo on the training pad that we lay in the laundry room either and would always do it on the carpet. We have started to take him out for walks in hope that he will pee and poo outside instead. So far he poo twice outside, once right in the middle of the small street where we live when we were coming home frm a walk, and the other time on a concrete sidewalk. I thought that dogs would normally prefer to poo on grass instead. I dont keep him in the crate for long. If he's awake, i would put him in there for half hour then let him out to play and hang out in the lounge room under supervision. If he's asleep, I will let him out to pee once he wakes up and then play with him. Eventually I hope that he can stay in the crate for a few hours when I am busy with household chores or when I need to be at work and he's alone at home for a few hours before my partner comes home from work.
  8. Hi, I have just started crate training last night. I have introduced Obi (13 week old cavalier) to his crate a week ago by giving him treats when he goes into the crate and encouraging him to go in there to play etc. I also left a few toys to keep him occupied when he's in the crate. I managed to put his doggie bed into the crate... so it's really nice and comfy. Last night was the first time he slept in his crate. He was really good, didn't bark or whine when we left him in the crate. At first I sat near the crate where he could see me (I had the crate under my desk! hehe... so that I could use the computer and watch over him at the same time ) This morning I wanted to take him out to the toilet but was interrupted by a phone call. The gate of the crate was left open and Obi came out, and pee on the carpet. That was my fault... no excuse In the afternoon, I took him out to the park for a walk and also to play  . We spent an hour in the park but he did not pee and we went home. I play with him for a while and took him to the toilet but he didn't pee so I put him in the crate for about 45 min. He slept in the crate and when he woke up, I let him out to pee but he didnt pee. So I played with him and every 5-10min, I guided him to the toilet to pee. After half hour of trying, he finally pee in the toilet! yipee I allowed him to play in the lounge room under my supervision for about an hour and as I was going to guide him to the toilet, he pee on the carpet. i didnt make a fuss of it and i quickly clean up and then allow him in the lounge room for a little while before putting him back into the crate. He slept for an hour. Questions: 1) I noticed that he doesn't play with his toys when in the crate. He would just lie down and then fall asleep. Is it normal that Obi always sleeps while in the crate? 2) When I let him out of the crate and take him to the toilet, he doesn't always pee. Should I put him back into the crate or should I play with him then take him to the toilet again after a short while. 3) Am I doing the right things in the above for crate training? Would appreciate some advice from those who has successfully crate trained their puppies. Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas
  9. i remember him scratching a little before bath... it could be the shampoo maybe. today he hasn't scratched as much. i will monitor the next few days.
  10. CavNrott, i'm feeding him meaty bones for main meal. Sometimes i give him raw beef mince with vegetables. He has been on this diet for the past 3-4 weeks. Jillybean, we had just given obi a bath 2 days ago. Digressing a little......It was his first bath since we had him and I hope it hasn't traumatized him. we try to make it fun by having toys in the bathtub and encouraged him to play with the toys but he was whining throughout. After the bath we gave him a treat and praise him. Stormie, he has not scratched as much today as in the last 2 days. It it doesn't stop in the next day or two, I'd take him to the vet as suggested by Persephone.
  11. the interceptor spectrum does cover tape worm. i have checked through obi's legs, groin, tail and back area. can't find any flea or flea dust. he doesnt scratch or bite all the time but i noticed that when he scratches, he does it for a long while and then will attempt to bite his legs to ease the itch. anyway i think i hv to start on flea prevention soon. just wished the rain would stop so that i could go out
  12. Thanks for all your replies. The vet recommended Interceptor Spectrum for worming and I'm using that now. But I have not started on flea prevention yet. I will go and check out the flea prevention products later today. How do I find out if Obi has got fleas? Sorry this seems like a silly question to ask, but it's my first time having a dog
  13. obi is 13 wks old and we've had him for 5 weeks now. we live in an apartment so we use a training pad in the laundry room for his toilet. until now, he still pee on the carpet even though we have trained him to go to the laundry room when he needs to pee. we have been consistent in bringing him to the toilet but sometimes he simply refuse to pee in the laundry room and the moment we let him out, he will pee on the carpet. he's still a baby so we are very patient with him and hopefully he will get it fully one day
  14. hi, my 13-week old cavalier puppy, obi kept scratching and biting his own legs in the last 2 days. does anyone know if something is wrong with obi? also, need some advice on flea treatment for puppy. what type is most suitable for puppies and when should i start? thanks.
  15. Hi, I'm thinking of crate training my cavalier puppy obi as i heard that it's effective for toilet training as well as keeping the pup safe for short period of time when we are busy at home and can't keep an eye on him. I have been very consistently taking him to the laundry room (he's an indoor puppy and we live in an apartment) where his toilet is whenever he wakes up, after a meal or play. He was doing ok initially but lately he simply refuse to do it in the laundry room. He would try to tear or chew the training pad that we lay on the floor and sometimes he even lay down on the training pad! we would let him out of the laundry room when he does not pee after a while... and he would then pee on the carpet the minute he walks out. sometime when i try to guide him into the laundry room, he would stop at the entrance and then run away. when he does pee on the training pad, we always praise him, pat him and give him treats. we're hoping that with the crate training, the situation will improve and also the crate will keep him safe during times when we cant keep watch on him. I have come across 2 sizes of the crate which I think would be suitable for obi. i think the medium one should be just right when he's fully grown, but i need a second opinion before i get one. the dimensions of the 2 crates are : medium 30" - 76cm x 50cm x 58cm large 36" - 90cm x 60cm x 69cm Thanks

yes puppy school is at the vet's. i bought some training pads for obi yesterday. i laid it at the same place where i laid the newspaper. instead of peeing on it, he slept on it! later that day he did pee on the training pad twice. but sometimes he seems to be in a destructive mode and seek to shred the training pad. and when i tell him firmly 'no' he tried to bite me.

If he is only 8 weeks old, he wouldn't have had all his vaccinations, are you sure that it is safe for him to attend puppy preschool? I've always waited until the final vaccination before I attend puppy preschool, but please anyone correct me if I’m wrong.... Congratulations with the perseverance with house training! obi has just turned 9 weeks. most puppy preschool start at 8 weeks. the trainer said that as long as obi has his 1st vaccination, it's alright. he said that the best time to socialise pups are between 8-12 weeks.
  19. hi sarah, i'm sending to my puppy to a preschool too. if you want i can PM the contact details to you. the one that i am going to is quite flexible. there is no fixed start date and you can start anytime. there is 1 private session followed by 6 group sessions. you can skip a class if you are busy and rejoin the following week. the pups in the class are all at different stages of the class so yor pup will get to socialise with many different pups at the end of the preschool. they are available at 5 locations too. maybe you want to give them a call to find out if they will able to get you started in dec.

obi's not very consistent with peeing on the newspaper. we did give him a lot of praise and treats when he does do it. i think he has more misses. but occasionally he does run straight into the laundry room and pee by himself without us prompting him. so we are very encouraged by that :D currently he refuse to poo on the newspaper. i will guide him into the laundry room on the newspaper but he just wouldn't do it. he would then run out and sniff around the carpet and do it there. we wonder if we should use the same method to train him to poo on the newspaper? or maybe we should get a small patch of fake turf. we are waiting for him to get his 2nd vaccination then we can then take him out for walks and to do his pee and poo outside instead. he's starting puppy preschool tomorrow and we have 1 private lesson tomorrow before he joins the group next week, so i am really looking forward to it. i have attached a few photos of obi here but can someone teach me how do i use obi's photo as my avatar? thanks
  21. obi does the same as well... he bites our hand or chew on my shoe when he's playing and gets excited. we would give him a firm 'no' and then stop playing with him immediately. when he stops, we will then praise him. but sometimes he would persist in the biting/chewing and i hv to give him a deep and loud 'no' that almost sound like a bark and he would stop. i have also tried yelping and then whining when he bites my finger during play... sometimes he would stop biting and lick my finger instead.

today obi pee on the newspaper 3 times! twice when we guided him into the laundry room, and another time he ran into the laundry room by himself after play. this is great progress. he did also have a few misses today.... because we guided him to the laundry room and stayed for abt 10min, but he didnt seem to want to pee, so we let him out. next thing we know, he pee on the carpet. anyway we're concentrating on the good part.... and he's really improving. i have to get some training pad soon as i think the newspaper dont really do a good job of absorbing the pee quickly and sometimes obi steps on the puddle.

this evening, i saw obi sniffing around the carpet and took him to the newspaper.... he did his poo on it and i praise him and and give him treats. and just now my partner took him to the laundry room after play and told him 'toilet', he stepped onto the newspaper. even though he didnt pee there but i think he is learning where the toilet is. he did also hv some misses but it's ok, we will persevere. Tomorrow I will get some puppy pad and leave a few around the apartment

Our initial plan was to toilet train him in the balcony. But we have a low bench in there with potted plants and we're afraid that when he gets older he might climb up and fall over. We're on the thrid floor. He's only had his first vaccination so we're concerned about taking him out. But once he has all his vaccinations, we will definitely take him out for walks. We're not expecting him to be fully toilet trained but we hope the current situation will improve a little with a little changes in our method of toilet training.

    Help Needed!

I did soak up the urine with tissue and left in with the newspaper in the laundry room. But that didnt help. I also bought the puppy training drops and put some on the newspaper as well. I think he might have thought that the laundry room is a punishment room. am thinking of maybe feeding him in the laundry room as well so that he will have more positive experience in that room. alternatively we can also try feeding and doing toilet training at the balcony. We did consider crating as well if the above fails. I understand that he's only a puppy and we'll be very tolerant of him. Will keep all of you posted how things goes and thanks for all your advice and suggestions.
