What are the dental effects of frozen turkey/chicken wings? Are they as beneficial as non-frozen? I ask because Zeus hoovers his turkey wing down without really chewing it and by freezing them he does chew them. I also have to freeze them because Kirah chews through her chicken wing slowly and by freezing zeus's turkey wing, they finish at the same time. I tried brisket bones but Kirah got tired from chewing it and Zeus took half she'd broken off. They don't fight at all which is good. So I'm just wondering if there's a frozen vs fresh debate and which is best for teeth cleaning?

Well, my Lapphund is also a laphund, or she likes to think so :) I think it's Norwich. I knew about Norwich but I was having iPhone issues :/ Thanks for the Lapphund heads up; I though Laphund looked funny but lol at yours loving the lap!! -
Kirah was like that when she was younger. She'd be in the middle of a game of tug and stop, pee, then go on her merry way. As she's only ever inside when I stay at a friend's house, I didn't really have a problem but now she's nearly 1 and is quite good inside. The best thing if you're having trouble knowing when she needs to go is start taking her out every 10 to 20 minutes. With Kirah I'd walk around the yard with her which made her follow me around and she'd squat and pee. Then it's lots of praise and back inside. Zeus on the other hand house trained himself. Being inside is such a privilege that he never wants to go out, so when he asks to be let out, or voluntarily follows me when I take Kirah out, I know he needs to toilet. He's a smart boy my Zeusling!!

Thanks for the info re the tape wormer. Will check it out at my vet when I go next to weigh Kirah and have both her and Zeus's microchips verified for CAR.

Hmm ... This could prove challenging!! Toy: Papillon Small: Aussie Terrier and Nowich Terrier Medium: Finnish Laphund Large: Saluki and OES Giant: Bernese Mountain Dog I hope I spelled them all correctly! -
I'm exactly the same. I carry treats in a treat bag as I'm still working on Zeus's recall, however, I would NEVER feed anyone else's dog. Even though I know all the owners (we're a group of regular park goers) I only ever slip Zeus and Kirah treats when the other dogs aren't nearby. I know my two aren't food aggressive but I don't see it my job to be rewarding other people's dogs. There was one instance where Zeus ran off and didn't come back. I found him sitting at a fence being fed hot chips by someone eating his lunch there. ARE YOU SERIOUS!! How could I even hope to get my dog's attention with liver treats if you're feeding him hot chips?!

My family has strictly been a one dog family until nearly 3 years ago when I brought Zeus home. We've only ever had one dog and one cat at a time but since Zeus they're a bit more open. They won't go more than 2 dogs as "two's enough" and I'd love another cat but Calypso would have a panic attack if I brought home a second cat. The only animal we've had lots of is fish and my brother currently has two tanks set up!

OSoSwift can I ask where you buy your tapewormer from? I've been looking for it before I make the switch to Advocate but am not having any luck. Is it available from vets? The staff at my local Pet Barn looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if they stocked it. I asked after Droncit but I'm not sure if there's another brand too.

I'd be interested to find this out too. Just the other day at the dog park, an entire male SBT peed all over my leg and foot. I was so angry as there was no apology from his owner!

Wow! I've never heard of a dog doing this. With all my puppies, I just clip the lead to their collar/harness and away we go; they've all loved getting out and about. Maybe instead of attaching the lead to a collar, try a harness as it'll be attached to his back rather than close to his head. You could also try bits of hotdog or cheese to see if this gets him motivated.

Boy Caught Tryin To Get In Our Back Yard
RiverStar-Aura replied to Atanquin's topic in General Dog Discussion
It may not have been sinister at all. Perhaps he was just wanting to visit and play with Zorro and he's simply not saying because he knows he was in the wrong. I'd definitely look into stopping this too and it's lovely to hear that you've got nice neighbours who help keep an eye out when you're not home! -
Smacking Aggressive Dog, What Does The Dog Think?
RiverStar-Aura replied to sallyandtex's topic in General Dog Discussion
Zeus lunges at dogs when he's on a lead going for walks because he wants to play with them and gets so excited then frustrated that he can't. I ALWAYS have treats on me, make him sit well out of the way of the other approaching dog and shovel food into his mouth. He's so distracted by the "ZOMG FOOD!!!" that he forgets about the other dog completely. He's getting much better though and is starting to look to me for food when he sees other dogs!! I find there's no point to yelling or smacking; it gets people nowhere. -
I'm only a pet owner but as far as I know, isn't the main register needed if a person wishes to show their dog? Kirah was purchased on limited because as my breeder showed and told me, there are certain things that make her not show quality (ie she has too much white on her). There were also only two bitches born in the litter and the other buyer was after a show girl and she was sold on main register. I don't mind that my girl was on limited because as I wanted a pet, it would've seemed silly to have her on main register.

I don't understand how my question could "make you cross". I only asked because I've never seen dog shows before so excuse me for my ignorance. I didn't know people have been picking dogs up like this as I've never been exposed to it before. My dogs are pets so I guess it's my fault I'm naive about the show world.

I love my dogs simply because they AREN'T children. I don't have maternal instincts and children make me cringe; I loathe them. I do refer to them as my bubbas, however, they will always be dogs to me and I love them for it.

I'm sorry to hear about your boy OSoSwift. May he run free and to you. Poochie fought and struggled when she was PTS and she was so dehydrated my vet couldn't find a vein -- he ended up missing and she started bleeding and struggling more. Eventually he sedated her and she died peacefully in my arms. I was beyond distraught once she'd gone but not once did I think the vet did a poor job. I like to think that Poochie struggled because she was a battler and was giving her all in her final moments. That's who she was as a dog and never did things the easy way. I love how my vet handled her: he offered to keep her on ice until the family could decide what we wanted to do with her and he even gave me a hug. Poochie was a favourite patient of his and because of her, he's looking to get an Aussie Terrier of his own -- he fell in love with the breed. The clinic even posted me a sympathy card with all the staffs' names (each written by every individual vet and nurse). Even though seeing Poochie struggle and bleed like that I'm not angry with the vet. She was 16 nearly 17 and had kidney failure. I was informed about my options and was given time to discuss them -- I was at the clinic for over 2 hours. I'm sorry you had such a horrible experience with Percy, but please don't let your new rescue suffer because of one experience. Animals need vets as much as we humans need doctors.

Nawwwwww Zorro looks so proud of his extra ears!! Happy Easter guys!
-
Kirah was so proud to show off her ears. She even puffed up for it. Zeus wasn't too impressed this time around though!
-
I'm wondering if perhaps Percy wasn't a healthy dog to begin with. The OP has stated that he needed to go to the vet often and just comparing that to Poochie, Zeus and now Kirah, they've only ever needed to see the vet for their annual check-up. Oh and now I'm humming the Mister Ed theme song: A horse is a horse of course of course ...
-
Happy Easter all!! Little Kirah at 11 months is enjoying playing dress-up! Big brother Zeus *woe is my life* Goofy together!
-
I guess it makes sense that the terriers would be use to it. I can't believe they all just hung there rigid as though they were standing. If I did that to Kirah her little legs would be flailing everywhere

I think my heart just melted for little Edie!

What a lovely smart boy! How did you teach the bow command with that signal? I've almost got Zeus taking a bow but I have to bring my hand under his front legs and draw it back under him. As such he gets it confused with his "drop" signal
