  1. I'd be really interested in a solution to this too because I've always taken my two out together and now to work on their loose-leash walking, they need to be separated. When taking Kirah out to puppy school, Zeus made such a noise and carry on I felt bad leaving him behind. The next week I gave him a chicken wing and this seemed to work. Maybe you could try something similar with Tess or Fleming.
  2. Personally I'd still be rationing out the food but instead of during the day, just feed morning and night. An adult dog doesn't really need to eat throughout the day. You can also try cutting the meat down further if need be and add in vegetables: carrots are fantastic and other people on the forum also use sweet potato and pumpkin. When it comes to the diet can you be absolutely certain that no one in your household is sneaking her anything extra? How much did the vet say she should weigh? My Aussie Terrier weighs 7 kilos and is fed 1 tablespoon of Royal Canin for breakfast and dinner. My 13.7 kilo medium sized beagle cross is on 1/4 cup of RC twice daily. I usually think its not much but they're doing fine!! Good luck. Diets aren't easy!!
  3. Belgian Sheps are also fantastic at agility so I'd have those on my list!!
  4. Very gorgeous. I'm sure it'll be hard for you to say goodbye tomorrow. What a cutie patootie!! I call them Have-a-sneeze!!
  5. Gotta love auto-correct!! I use a Zoom Groom on Zeus, a horse curry comb, shedding blade and furminator and he still sheds too! I've also found that using rubber gloves to gently hand strip has been a bit helpful but generally I just brush with a metal pin brush.
  6. I live in a really bad tick area so for the course of the summer months they get Advantix fortnightly. I pretty much stop over autumn and winter. As for worming ... Drontal maybe once a year Heartworm, both my dogs had the injection last year but won't be getting it anymore. A monthly chew seems to be the way to go for us now.
  7. Could I please have the link to that video. I have a friend who would appreciate it this morning too. I'm on my phone so have no idea how to find it.
  8. OMGosh that was so cute!! Thanks for sharing and making me smile this morning!!!
  9. I have to keep mine frozen. Kirah gets chicken wings because she's smaller and Zeus has turkey wings. By feeding frozen they both finish eating them at the same time. Unfrozen, Zeus takes three bites and it's gone. Are frozen chicken/turkey wings just as beneficial for teeth cleaning as non-frozen?
  10. When I picked Kirah up from her breeders' property, I took with me plenty of blankets and a solid plastic cat carrier. Kirah got put inside and we got as far as a block down the road when she started complaining and fighting to get out. She spent the rest of the trip home (about a 2.5 hour car drive) on happily on my lap before she finally settled over my shoulder and fell asleep! We also took plenty of pit-stops along the way to give her a pee break (we had no accidents on the way home) and to give my dad and me time to stretch our legs.
  11. I've just been searching the Internet for online dog/cat stores and came across The Clear Dog Shop. While looking through their foods I came across a New Zealand derived dry food called Zeal Holistic and was wondering if people here have heard of it or even tried it. I also found a link to the ingredients of each of the flavours although they have listed the ingredients for the Seafood Risotto under the Lamb Risotto and vice versa! What do you all think of the ingredients list: Zeal Holistic Ingredient Make-Up
  12. I'm still in awe over Chaser. Such a gorgeously, smart girl. Zeus's poor head would explode with a toy pile that big!! I'm really not surprised about the pointing thing, however, I found it interesting that chimps really didn't have a clue. That was fascinating to watch; thanks for sharing!!
  13. Aussie Terriers will always be my breed of choice but I love all breeds. They each have their own uniqueness and their own quirks, which makes them gorgeous in their own individual way!! I find terriers very easy to live with and sure, you need to be firm but that's part of their charm. I've also posted on this forum that after Zeus (beagle x JRT) that I'd never own a hound. I've since changed my opinion; I'd love to own another hound. Sure, I found training Zeus much more of a challenge than any of my Aussie Terriers but I believe that came down to experience. I'd never owned a hound before and my usual training methods, though fine for my Aussies, weren't suitable for Zeus. He's nearly 3 and whilst every day I'm still working on his recall and loose-leash walking, he's a delightful boy with a zest for life, love and learning. He's eager to please and will do what I ask because he knows it makes me happy. It hasn't been easy sailing all the time, and quite often I've been frustrated to the point of tears with him, however, I've learned alongside him and we're the best of friends. It's been a real experience and eye-opener but I wouldn't change it for the world!! Maybe one day I'll have the guts to take on a Saluki, which I would love to own one day!!
  14. I've seen the word "stacking" used a lot in this forum and in just wondering if someone could explain what it means. I have images of "stacking" being a doggie pyramid!
  15. But that's the rub though isn't it? Drink driving, speeding, running red lights and stop signs, illegal u-turns are also against the law and how often is this policed? Not every offender is caught -- I'd wager that almost 98% of speeders never get caught by police. If you're going to put breeding laws in place how would this be policed? What's to stop a BYB from shuffling the bitch and pups all over the neighbourhood to stop from being caught? I agree that far more education is required -- the amount of owners I've seen who want to breed their "special <insert wimpy dog name>" on the basis that she's so cute and will make cute babies. They'd have no idea what's involved. I also don't understand how these numpties can deal with a bitch in heat. I look after my dogs but at this stage of my life I could never look after an entire bitch. Another issue with aggressive dogs is the amount of numpty male owners who won't desex their male dogs because it plays on their own masculinity. I don't get it. Just because your dog is neutered doesn't make you any less male. This image of neutered dogs needs to change.
  16. Kirah lies to walk over our cactii so maybe the pup was exploring and got stuck then started to squirm to get out causing more prickles to get stuck in him. Poor little Cactus Jack
  17. I asked the vet if they've made epi-pens for dogs that I can carry around in case of more stings. He laughed and said sadly no, there's no such thing. It's a total blessing that at least now I know Zeus is allergic to bees so I can be prepared. I was worried he had a tick on him and that he was dying. My brain went into worst case scenario overdrive!! So now I know that if he gets like that again and his muzzle goes bright pink/red it's an allergic reaction. Being stung is the same in humans too. The first sting might not have any effects whatsoever but the next one could flair up allergic reactions. I'm just glad I know. And it's good that little Mimi pulled through too. It's such a horrible thing as an owner to witness. I did get annoyed with my dad because he thinks it's amusing Zeus is allergic to bees. When I told him Zeus passed out he started laughing "oh it's funny". Umm ... No its effing not!!
  18. I've been researching this too and I decided not to treat with Advocate and Advantix simultaneously as I feel it's a huge overdose of flea prevention. All spot-ons are recommended monthly for fleas and fortnightly for ticks. If you're applying a flea/tick treatment every 2 weeks, why add another flea treatment in the mix just because it's a womer too? I'm quite happy using Drontal every 3 months and am switching to Heartgard rather than renewing my dogs' heartworm injection. I was contemplating Advocate for a while as I worry about ear mites and mange with Kirah (my last Aussie had a bad case of ear mites and mange), but living in a high paralysis tick zone, I worry about that more.
  19. I feel your pain. My poor Zeusling is allergic to bee stings and I found this out the hard way. We were at the dog park when Zeus starting chewing his foot and was limping. I called him over to look and found nothing; he then proceeded to hoon off like nothing happened. A few minutes later I noticed he was lagging behind and when I called, he very slowly walked over. I offered him a treat, which he refused then he collapsed on the ground and was completely unresponsive. I was panicked; his muzzle went red and he was a limp, dead weight. Luckily another lady at the park offered to come with me to the nearest vet clinic. I had to carry him the length of the park and into the car where he still didn't move. He vomited in the waiting room, I was shaking and in tears whilst trying to fill out the paperwork as we'd never been to this vet before. The vet was lovely and explained that he'd probably been stung before, which is why it's worse this time -- he's become allergic to stings -- and gave him a shot of something. He took Zeus out the back and had me wait with Kirah in the waiting room to see if he improved -- if not I was told he'd be spending the night. We were very lucky it was only a "mild" reaction and Zeusling was led out all happy and bouncing about an hour later. It was the longest hour of my life. Since then, I've been paranoid about bee stings because we've got a lot of flowering natives in our backyard and I worry that something will happen when I'm at work. Luckily my 2 of my brothers are home all the time and I've asked the youngest one to keep an eye and ear out. Long story short, I don't hate bees as I love honey, but I hate their stings!!
  20. I can't believe that all of them fit in a single bed. I struggle with just Kirah in mine; but then she does stretch out and takes up more space than me!! Totally a good excuse for no school!
  21. There were 2 standard poodles at our dog park tonight and they are FAR from being a prissy breed. They canter with such an air of elegance and hold themselves as if they're saying "we're too good for this place". I love how proud they look when running around and they are such big, sweet buffoons!! As for oodles, there's a few at the dog park too -- one was born with only one kidney and the other has horrible skin problems. And personally I don't think they're all that great to look at.
  22. Thank you do much for sharing this painting. It's stunning and I'd love to think Poochie gives me invisible love like this. Gone but not forgotten and here in spirit. Just beautiful!!
  23. Does anyone here on DOL participate in this event? As I understand it, there are lots of mixed feelings on DOL regarding the RSPCA so I was just wondering if people are getting involved this year. Edited for spelling!
