There's a lady who does agility in NSW with her Keeshonden and they're great to watch. I call them the Flying Fluffballs and they have an absolute blast!!
-
MonElite as tough as it was to see that I'm glad you did the right thing. Perhaps still make a call to RSPCA even if they do end up doing nothing -- at least you've tried right?! I'd be jumping to the same conclusions about the poor boy being in trouble; dogs, especially staffies, don't just shut down like that over nothing. In fact, I've seen the exact same behaviour and this was in a 16 week old Amstaff puppy at puppy school. The poor boy was terrified of his owners to the point they couldn't get him to recall. He'd slump in one spot and just not move, but he'd recall to anyone else in the group, just not the family. I can't imagine the type of punishment these dogs get in order to make them fearful to return to their owners. Sure, my dogs don't have a great recall either but that's because they're too busy having their own type of fun, but they don't shut down at the thought of coming back to me. To me, there seems to be a huge gap in the way recall training is taught to puppies. I see it at the off lead parks all the time where owners start growling/yelling at their dogs to "get the **** back here NOW!!" and even I'm thinking that I'd rather run the opposite direction. I was always taught to make coming back to me a really fun/ZOMGAWESOME experience and that the best way to instigate a recall is to run in the opposite direction as if you're leaving.

Widget: From Big Belly To Babies!
RiverStar-Aura replied to Kirislin's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
I don't know much about breeding but if you are concerned about the size of them, can they be delivered early like say a human baby can be induced for whatever reasons? Best of luck with little Neko -- she's looking really fab (if a tad uncomfortable!). -
I've found with my three that they love to burrow and would therefore destroy any type of raised bed available. I had my dad make me a pine box to the measurements of a Snooza D1000 (but the sides higher) and going on 4 plus years now, no bedding destruction. The D1000 acts as a mattress then I top with blankets, which they make snug little nests in. And bonus points because the timber is good for teething puppies! We still even use Poochie's (dog in my sig) old box which is just single small dog size. It's now heading well past its 20th year and still going strong. It has Poochie, Zeus, Kirah and now Rupert teeth marks!

Where Did Your Breed's Name Originate?
RiverStar-Aura replied to RiverStar-Aura's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's really fascinating and I want the ANKC to change the name from just Borzoi to the entire Russkaya Psovaya Borzaya as I think it sounds lovely! There are so many interesting backgrounds between all these and makes me kinda sad that I'm stuck with the non-descript Aussie Terrier! -
Pro Heart Injection Vs Tablets
RiverStar-Aura replied to Willowlane's topic in General Dog Discussion
Most vets I've found ask if you've been giving regular treatment. If not, then testing is ideal and is usually offered before giving a treatment dose. If you've been regularly treating your dog for heartworm protection up until now, it should be highly unlikely for him to be infected. -
Typical late night shower pondering and it struck me ... How did some breeds get their names? Mine are pretty self explanatory: Aussie Terrier (a terrier developed in Australia) and Norwich Terrier (a terrier from the Norwich area), however there are some that aren't quite so simple. Ones that have me stumped (only as I'm too lazy to research myself!) are: Whippet, Greyhound (were the originals really just "grey hounds"?), Kerry Blue (Kerry?) and Beagle to name a few. Also, I remember reading (or being told) that Australian Shepherds are only named Aussie because it was to help increase their popularity in America (due to all things Australian being awesome!!). Is this true?

Has it really been 2 years since little Neko joined us on DOL? Holy has that time just zoomed on by!! Congrats on this up coming litter -- so exciting!!!! And many fingers crossed for smooth sailing from here!!

Am definitely planning on taking a crate. I understand we're supposed to pretty much stay in the dog pavilion for the day to talk to show goers etc, but I'm unsure about things like lunch. Do they let us leave for food or is it best to take my own? I'm kinda just winging everything and still learning to groom too; it's hard as there are so few Norwiches around! I might pop over and say hi if I'm up for the 24th (greyhounds). I have a friend entering her English Springers so I'm possibly planning on heading up to watch then too. :)
-
I've just entered my very first Sydney Royal and now I'm seriously thinking I'm an idiot. I only have one dog entered who'll be in the Puppy Dog class -- I didn't bother with the sweepies as I just couldn't commit to 2 days at the show. I'm only new to showing myself and so far have only been in one show a few weeks back. I do have an all weekend show this weekend though so yay! Is anyone else here entered/entering?

I just did a google search and it looks as though Maxine has passed away: http://www.heavenaddress.com/Maxine-Dorothy-Chappell/1099706/

Bugger on me then. All this time I've been thinking of entering Kirah in neuter shows and to find out now, 4 years down the track that I could've done it all along! Thanks for the clarification everyone!!
-
This is what I'm thinking too. Thanks Kirislin! I had a look at Zeus's Associate Reg certificate and it's yellow, so I'm thinking they're both mains registered.
-
Short of calling Dogs NSW and asking, is there an easy way to tell if my dogs have been registered on main or limited? A friend told me that her ESS was issued a yellow pedigree, which she said meant he was on the limited register. When I purchased Kirah, I was sent out a blue pedigree certificate but I always assumed that as there's 'non-breeding' stamped on the back, that meant she was on limited. When I got my new puppy's certificate (he's been mains registered as I show him) it's also blue so I'm a bit confused. As they both have blue pedigree certificates from the ANKC does this mean they're both mains registered?

Jack Russell Grooming

You really need to move to the NSW coast so I can get you to strip my Aussie and Norwich terriers. You do an amazing job and Gruffy the Scruffy is just such a gorgeous model!! -
Question For Breeders
RiverStar-Aura replied to Breeding_Questions's topic in General Dog Discussion
I find it interesting you talk about the "vast majority" then start referring to Labrador Retrievers. One only needs look at the most of the UK terrier breeds to realise the "vast majority" are nowhere near as common/popular/in demand as you make out. In fact, many are probably on the endangered list: Dandie Dinmont, Sealyham, Glen of Imaal, Norfolk, Norwich, Skye just to name a few. I'd go as far to say that it's really only the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire, Mini Bull Terrier and Bull Terrier that are really classed as being popular and in demand. -
Question For Breeders
RiverStar-Aura replied to Breeding_Questions's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm not a breeder, however, I don't believe responsible breeders breed to meet demands at all. I think most breed their dogs for themselves in order to hopefully have puppies they'd like to run on as future for their own prefix/stock. Of course, this means there will be other puppies in the litter needing selling. A puppy I've recently purchased is considered an extremely rare and vulnerable breed here in Australia and in its home country England. Very few puppies are registered annually and there is risk of the breed dying out. A large litter is considered 3 puppies and not all of these will be suitable for breeding. I'd place little to no stock in any "research" done by the RSPCA as they are against ethical responsible breeders. To me, people breeding for supply/demand = backyard breeder. -
K9 Pro have also started stocking cooling coats made from shade mesh -- I'm looking at buying these for my two to use during agility trials. Mesh cooler coat

Looking For Advice Re: Choosing A Breed
RiverStar-Aura replied to Catfishers's topic in General Dog Discussion
Catfishers what about a Belgian Shepherd? The Groenendael are pure black and can look quite menacing or there's the Mal like Huski's gorgeous Wiz and Blaze. I love the look of the Tervueren though: fluffy like the Groenendael but the colour of a Mal or GSD. -
I love seeing and hearing about everyone's dogs; they're all special in their own unique way. All the goober rotties make me smile so Dyzney and Grumpette need to keep posting. I adore the adventures of all the greyhounds especially Stan and the Madster! I have fallen head over heels for the cute-pie Ping -- thanks for introducing me to this breed. Podengos are very interesting :D Erik the Tall -- his name always cracks me up coz he's so short!! My heart though was taken by Panto. She was the most beautiful dog and I thought for years she was a Lappie and I fell in love with the breed because of her. I loved following her life adventures and will miss seeing regular photos of her.

Five-Year-Old Girl Was Bitten By Dog Inside Bunnings Store
RiverStar-Aura replied to Two Best Dogs!'s topic in In The News
...based on how the incident happened this thread has not much to do with misbehaved kids; however, your language and generalizing negative description of kids shows that it is obviously very important for you to let everyone know that you don't like kids. Well, think about this: the world is not as it is because of the kids, if it is messed up it is because of us adults. Kids don't rule the world, they don't make the policies for Bunnings, they don't vote and don't govern countries and so on..... So if you see something you don't like: you can be pretty sure that it is something we adults stuffed up. Depending on our age and health - and our skills - our time and capability to make this world a better place is likely limited, I guess we have to leave it with our kids if there should be any progress. Therefore I ask you to make an effort and be polite to kids as they read this forum too - and they need all the support they can get, otherwise they might become a miserable adult character like so many. I've been a member of this forum a lot longer than you and I'm pretty sure that most users here are well aware of my stance on children. I've never hidden the fact that I dislike sprogs but I don't begrudge those who choose to have them. I'm just asking for a little respect for my choice not to wish to interact with them. I understand that it's the past, which has shaped our today, however, I'm pretty sure that my blip of an existence (and that of those around me) have had very little to do with shaping today's society. Perhaps technologically wise, but regarding politics etc, a mere blip. Finally, the kids on this forum probably aren't the feral shits I see running around, getting in the way, stealing things etc.
