  1. Precious eh? Perhaps you'd like to point out the bit where I've whined about repeated posts from newbs asking for advice or ones about dog parks, puppy problems etc?? Let me help you out. I haven't. I'd never complain about a post seeking advice. Bloody tempting at times to point out that the forum has a search function but I haven't done that either. HW I agree. This thread isn't about all the repeated "which dog food is best?" "which flea/tick treatment?" etc. It's about the starting of numerous threads which serve no purpose at all -- except to maybe contribute to the "OH NOES! There's a labracavoodle for sale on GT" brigade. That's not helpful discussion at all and doesn't serve any real purpose at all. Everyone on this forum is well aware that GT is home to thousands of BYB and cross breed dog sales so unless there is general interest in rescuing a dog, there's no need to post about it.
  2. Oh! I didn't mean that you were venting -- I worded that poorly. I meant the people who do come here to vent about what they see on GT. Sorry I'm not going to comment further; it's late and my brain is struggling with coherency.
  3. I've actually used both the Gentle Leader and the Infin8 halters have found that I much prefer the Gentle Leader. Zeus being part beagle likes to put his nose on the ground to smell, which I don't mind him doing, but this caused him to protest over the use of the GL. Every time his nose went down, his head jerked sideways so he'd crawl along the ground trying to rub it off. Eventually he calmed down and accepted it. The nose band on the Infin8 I found rode up into Zeus's eyes and the plastic adjuster actually dug into the bridge of his nose very near his bottom eyelid -- I own both a size 2 and size 3 for him but the size 2 is too small and the size 3 is a too big. I feel I've more control with the GL as I need to concentrate on what both myself and my dog are doing, otherwise, his head continually jerks around. That being said, we still have a long ways to go in regards to mastering loose-leash walking; I'm not the best teacher.
  4. That's a bit restrictive don't you think? I've heard from members here that registered breeders also advertise on GT because they know that it's a popular search engine for the purchase of pets. That'd be like the Telegraph saying "sorry, we can't advertise car sales because of all the dodgy cars being advertised." Perhaps instead of venting on here, email the sellers and give them some options; sometimes what's blatantly obvious to others, isn't so obvious to the sellers.
  5. I use Advantix rather than a tick collar. When off leash at the dog park, my two love to go swimming in the creek, which would render the collars ineffective. Also, I'd worry about Kirah chewing on Zeus's collar -- or her own for that matter as she's chewed through many of her own nylon collars overnight.
  6. Personally I don't get the whole up in arms over Gumtree. (As in why such focus on GT as opposed to other sites etc). The site is no different to someone placing a classified in the Telegraph; Gumtree is simply one classified site of many on the Internet. Sometimes the GT threads do pile up but there doesn't seem to be matching concern over the animals listed in the newspapers? If people don't know alternative sources for buying a pet, of course they're going to turn to something easy to google. It'd be a similar thing if amazon.com started selling pets. People know about Amazon and it's an easy site to use and navigate.
  7. I think you still can. You just can't contribute to threads you haven't started. You can thank the breeder bashers for that. I think Troy was having issues with the forum script when it was updated or something because I'd asked about it. As it stands, I don't have any posting access but I'm cool with that. It does help me hone my googling skills when searching for the answer! :D You can always still ask in General. It would break up the Gumtree ads. That's an excellent point and I can't believe I was so dumb to not think of that I'm naturally blonde; please speak slowly

  9. Agree 100% I read general but very rarely post as most are whining type topics with people not even taking advice, it's very annoying. Personally I don't like how the breeders have been sectioned off in their own little area because a few non-breeders made them decide to close ranks. Alot of knowledge and learning was lost that way but I can understand why. It's sad that the ones that actually financially contribute to this forum by having listings on Dogz can't even express their opinion freely anymore. Bring back the good old days! No more subforums! :) Oh I agree about the breeder's forum. I used to love that I could start a thread to ask a question regarding breeding because I find it very interesting and want to learn. I don't think I'll ever be a breeder myself -- I really admire the work they all do with their breeds of choice -- but sometimes something I've read will prompt a question and I don't want to PM people because I fear I'll be annoying them with what I think is probably a silly question and that they'll get annoyed for being PMed about it.
  10. I don't even remember my reason for joining DOL back in 2007. I think that maybe I had started my research into buying another dog as Poochie was getting on in years but I certainly wasn't an active member until well into 2009 after Zeus was purchased. Zeus is everything this board doesn't support -- he's a pet shop designer dog -- but I still chose to come here seeking help and advice. I'm not ashamed to admit that I knew nothing of BYB and pet shop puppies when I'd bought him, but if I could go back in time, I wouldn't change a thing. I'd also like to think that I didn't bombard the board with cries of "woe is me, I just bought a dog and know nothing of either of his crosses" but I also won't apologise for any help I sought out. I do know I did a LOT of reading up about beagles and JRTs to find some sort of mould to fit Zeus into; the result has been a well adjusted, intelligent and loyal dog who is the pride and love of my life. DOL did help my a lot in my search for another Aussie after I lost Poochie and I'm grateful for all the information shared in the Aussie Thread. Kirah came through DOL research and I couldn't be happier with her. She's everything true about the breed and her tough as nails attitude is everything I've come to know and love about the breed. She wouldn't be here if I hadn't discovered DOL back in 2007, because without it, there's no way I would've known how to search out an Aussie breeder. I'm also grateful for the wealth of knowledge regarding health and dog sports too. I've learned a lot about dog health and agility too and I'm definitely going to give it a go now I know that Zeus can compete. Most importantly of all, I value everyone's input and opinions because this place would be boring if we all agreed on everything!!
  11. I don't think there was anything wrong with starting your dingo thread, mixeduppup. You weren't crying over the injustice of a FTGH dog or x cross breed being sold, you were asking a legitimate question. It's a general dog discussion thread in which you asked if native dingoes could be sold legally. It does pose an interesting question as most native animals require a licence to own and I'm surprised that dingoes are okay as pets in NSW and WA.
  12. That is such a crappy situation for your aunt, Thundercat. I don't care what religion or nationality these new people are; it doesn't give them the right to threaten or impose it on others. If they don't like dogs, fine. That gives them no right to demand your aunt get rid of her dogs. Why don't they just stay away and ignore your aunt if she's so distressing to them? No one is forcing them to interact with your aunt. Definitely get your aunt to keep a journal of these events to her best ability. Also, does she have friends within the community too who could help stick up for her and the dogs? It's such a horrible situation to live in and she shouldn't be forced out of her home because of a**hats.
  13. When my two have the privilege of sharing my bed there's never enough space for me! Two dogs and one human in a single bed = three-way bitey face game over bed rights!!
  14. Give me a home among the gum trees, With lots of plum trees ...
  15. I too will be interested to read opinions and thoughts on this topic as it's something I've wondered myself. I've always wondered how breeders were trying to "better the breed" when there are already breed standards in place. As I understand it, breeders breed to aim as close to the breed standard as possible and aim for "bettering the breed" in terms of health (either trying to minimise the chance of hereditary diseases or by keeping better records of diseases). I'm not a breeder, nor know anything about breeding dogs, this is just what I believe the term "bettering the breed" to mean. Will definitely love to hear what others think!
  16. Take her to the vet. My girl Kirah had a bout of the runs that came on suddenly and with no change in her behaviour. She was prescribed an antibiotic to help calm the gut lining and she came good after one day of tablets. She's only just finished the full weekly course but everything is good so far. Please get your girl checked out; she might not have a temperature either. Kirah didn't.
  17. Kirah's eye cleared up over night but I've been keeping a close watch on it for the past 2 days. All seems to be going well and I appreciate all the helpful suggestions. Looking back, the sauce bottle probably wasn't ideal, but I couldn't think of another way to flush her eye -- I was worried so brain sort of stopped functioning. I did use lukewarm water though because I was flushing it at night and it was a cool evening. And I'll definitely head out and buy an eye dropper to have on hand incase I ever need to flush an eye out again!
  18. Ditto for both my dogs. Except during winter I ease off the Advantix.
  19. I edited my post because I see what you mean! I did get the eye ointment too and have administered that for overnight. I'm really hoping this turns out to be nothing. Poor Kirah's been in the wars this past week; first an upset stomach and diarrhoea and now this
  20. I tried my best to flush her eye out; she's not the most cooperative patient as she gets scared. I used a spare sauce bottle I found in our Tupperware cupboard and washed it (the bottle) in boiling water to sterilise. My poor girl!
  21. Thanks for that Kadbury. I'll go flush her eye out now with saline and pop out to the Chemist for some of the eye ointment you've mentioned. I wish I wasn't working tomorrow so that I could get her to the vet.
  22. I get home from work about 30 minutes ago to have my youngest brother tell me to have a look at Kirah's left eye. I do and this is what I see: and I won't be off work until Tuesday, however, I'd prefer to know what it is I'm dealing with here. There isn't any discharge coming from her eyes and they seem pretty clear -- this problem doesn't even seem to be phasing her at all either. Since I live in a house of morons, who couldn't even be bothered to call me at work (I could've told them to take her to the vet today for me), I thought I'd post here to get some opinions and help. Is there anything I can do for Kirah between now and Tuesday?
  23. Could you maybe call him Tiny Tim instead of Tiny Pony? He's the most cutest little thing I've ever seen! TP does seem quite white though. Where did his palomino colouring and white patches go?
