  1. I just find the iPet Care app handy coz it leaves the angry red reminders on my screen and I always see it. Nothing wrong with calendars either though. I just figure most people are on their phones these days!
  2. No No No! Your pup doesn't need anything for heartworm until they are 6 months old. It is not that hard to remember, phone apps, big red crosses on a paper calendar. I use valuhart for my dogs and administer every 6 weeks. I use a paper calendar. Thanks for clarifying Rebanne. So many people just don't realise this and I can't believe the vet would even suggest the injection on a puppy. Mine told me not to HW until 6 months then the choice of product was up to me. I also use Valuheart but on the 1st of every month.
  3. The app is called iPet Care. It's the most handy thing on my phone and stores all 3 dogs listed individually, my cat, their microchip numbers, diets, weight chart, birthday, next vet visit (can set date reminder) and even upload any PDFs you might want. There's also a very handy general notes section which I keep all breeder details, sire/dam rego numbers which I need for entering shows and agility. Plus it's idiot proof because I can use it!!
  4. How old is the pup because from what I just went through with my little boy is that he wasn't required to have heartworm prevention until 6 months of age. I've used Proheart in the past without any issues but I've since decided to use monthly tablets (Valuheart) instead. I use a pet care app on my phone which gives me reminders when each treatment/vac/ etc is due and also what it is.
  5. Same problem they keep telling me that my dogs dont exist. Ive got a litter of puppies papers here that went home last week and I was hoping I could just notify change of ownership Ive received notice from council that they are in the system but the Pet registry says no such animal. I just signed up and worked out that YES. Phone format DOES MATTER. One of my dogs, the phone number is xxxxxxxxxx The other two after being "not found" have been input as xxxx xxx xxx Still can't find my cat though after trying all number combinations possible. She was registered in 2003 though. Edit: if you still have your pet's council registry certificate like I do, it's easy to check what format your phone number is in from that.
  6. That's great news and odds are we possibly crossed paths without even knowing. I was at North of the Harbour with my dogs too!! If you ever need help and your breeder isn't available gimme a yell to see if I'm at the same show. Our group of friends consists of terriers, English springer spaniels and a Finnish Lappie so we're an odd bunch!!
  7. He's a smaller breed dog too -- they just don't pack weight on quickly. Both Kirah and Ruie my small terriers would put on around 100-200 grams per week.
  8. Also, head to the ANKC Regulations and read section 5 (I think) for conformation rules. What state are you in? I've only been showing since January and am completely addicted. I started by going with a friend who was also just starting out and her breeder mentored her through the start and is a really good friend now. Puppies can start conformation classes from 12 weeks of age. If your Frenchie is still 5 months old he can enter Baby Sweepstakes (3-6 month all breed judging) and also Class 1 (Baby Puppy Class). Once he hits 6 months you'll need to enter him in Puppy Sweepies (6-12 months) and Class 2 (Minor Puppy Dog 6-9 months). Definitely speak with your breeder. If they're a showie hopefully they can help you out!
  9. I'm so sorry to hear this Anne. I think Olivia was just beautiful and perfect and ever so lucky that you found her.
  10. These will be the longest 6 days of your life Eza! I remember counting down until Rupie came home with me and now he's nearly 10 months old already Can't wait for you to be with him and for tonnes of pics!
  11. If you're training her with food rewards I'd be cutting out her meal/dinner altogether. My guys might get 2-4 cheese cubes each for agility training (1 cube squishes into about 10 treats) but then that's it for the night, no dinner. If I'm at a dog show we're usually travelling in the early morning of the hours so no food before a trip and as they're sleeping in a crate most of the day, no breakfast either. I do understand what you mean about trying to reduce bugger all food into even less. My own little girl Kirah gets 1 tablespoon of kibble twice daily and it keeps her fit, lean and on a constant weight but I can hardly imagine trying to give her even less! My philosophy with weight loss is energy in to energy out. If your dog is lying around all day doing sweet bugger all then minimal food is required. If they're hardcore running around, more food required. Also, I used Royal Canin Light on my cat with awesome results. She dropped the kilo she needed to lose and has been at a stable weight ever since.
  12. Could be she's eating lizards. They give my Kirah the random runs for a day.
  13. Where abouts are you located? There are quite a number of awesome dog people who can be recommended for you.
  14. I've just been looking into that. Yes we can. This is the form: https://www.car.com.au/sites/default/files/Subs%20form%20with%20payment%20option%20Nov%202015.pdf'>https://www.car.com.au/sites/default/files/Subs%20form%20with%20payment%20option%20Nov%202015.pdf Does require a vet to confirm the microchip number. And there's info on the CAR site. https://www.car.com.au It's very easy to register with CAR in NSW. All 3 of my dogs are on both the NSW Companion Animal Registry and the Central Animal Records. You just fill out the form, have a vet verify the microchip number and send it away with payment. I travel all over for agility and confirmation showing and using a national register is peace of mind.
  15. Is there a reason he feels compelled to drink so much water in one go? Does he drink in bits and pieces throughout the day or just gulp in one sitting? If he's been vet checked and nothing is wrong, I'd start only offering him small amounts in a bowl at a time and not leave fresh water around. As in, put down just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl each time. Edit: my Zeusling has a habit of gulping water while I'm preparing his dinner. He doesn't get sick from it but it's just a weird thing he does
  16. Another thing is don't be afraid to contact a few closer breeders if there are any and work on building a really awesome relationship if there are no puppies currently available. There's nothing better than making a breeder friend for life and often you'll be rewarded with the best puppy for your family/lifestyle. :) Good luck in your search!
  17. Not being a breeder myself but because I'm very interested and looking into becoming one some day, provided Mr Fat's only fault is that he's too big for the standard, couldn't he be mated with a stunning bitch who is smaller than the standard? From what I've been reading about finding good breeding matches aiming to even out size by using one larger and one smaller seems like a good thing to do. Regardless of that, you must be super proud of this litter. They're all absolute darlings and stunners!!!
  18. I won't mention all the myna birds and pigeons he managed to catch and eat! ;) I call him my 7 year plus WIP (work in progress) -- we're still working hard but it's paying off! The absolute best where's the duck? moment was at our local dog park. He ran off with the duck and darted across the highway to maccas (I didn't know this at the time) and 5 minutes later he comes back without the duck. I just ask him "where's your duck?" and he zooms off and comes back seconds later with it in his mouth. All I'm thinking is thank goodness coz it's a $20 duck toy!! Edit: he'd apparently left it in the carpark before heading to maccas. He's also not allowed off lead at this park any more because maccas is sadly now a frequent ritual.
  19. I understand what you're saying and agree, which is why I feel that for these sorts of tests to be accurate, they'd need to involve dogs with little or no prior training. Many people train via luring which in turn teaches a dog to follow hand signals -- me included. I do little scent training with my beagle x and it's something my little terrier is actually better than him at. Zeus (beagle x) relies HEAVILY on his memory so if we're playing hide and seek/where's the duck? he never really sniffs me or the duck out. All Zeus does is use a process of elimination because he checks every single place I (or the duck) have ever hidden in the past. His memory is amazing and would probably rival Chaser had I put time and effort in. For me personally, I'm a lot happier doing agility with him and showing off with the masses of tricks he does know!
  20. I have been thinking of that as well ... It just goes to show how explicitly clear you have to be. I know I'm guilty of not being specific enough at times. One assumes he realizes she/the dog can smell it... Yes but I guess against smell would be to point at the cup without the ball and see what happens. Would the dog follow the pointing or ignore based on their smell figuring out you're pointing to the wrong cup?
  21. If you're thinking of agility I personally wouldn't recommend a hound or gundog. Don't get me wrong, they have the potential to be AWESOME agility dogs -- a girl in my club trials with a Wei -- but they are a LOT of work. There are also a lot of GSPs who compete in agility and they are delightful to watch but boy do they give their owners hell at times!! On the other hand, I run agility with a beagle cross and he's also a massive challenge, however, I have learnt far more about agility, handling and building a relationship with him that I would have had I owned a breed more willing to work and please (kelpie, koolie, border collie etc). I've learnt far more about trialling than I think I ever would've if it wasn't for Zeus the naughty beagle cross!! You'll need to work out how much work you're willing to put in and how much time you'll be spending on training. A friend of mine will be getting a Lappie soon to show and compete in agility with and being a working breed, will quite enjoy it. They do have a dense coat and the spitz attitude though. I personally love terriers, but you've mentioned you'd prefer something bigger. Poodles are awesome at agility as are shelties (but can be barkers) and all the varieties of Belgian Sheps are quite popular choices too. In the terrier category there are the Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers but I don't know much about them. DOLer Sheridan owns and possibly breeds them so if she doesn't poke her head in and you're interested to learn more, I'm sure she'd be happy with a PM! Also, where are those Iggy photos!!
