  1. The swelling didn't go down much at all today and he looks very uncomfortable...will try to get an early appointment at the vet tomorrow. I hope it is just an infected salivary gland, although the vet checked his temperature during the visit last week. Can he have an infection without running a temperature? From what I've read on the net, if it's anything other than an infection, treatment can be quite invasive
  2. About a week ago, before an early morning walk, I noticed that my 8 year old whippet's face was swollen under the jaw on the right side. I took him to the vet a couple of hours later but by that time the swelling had gone down. The vet thought it may be an allergy (Bobby has also occasionally been making these odd nasal honking noises - NOT reverse sneezing, sneezing nor coughing) for the past month. He was given a cortisone injection and the swelling and "honking" didn't reoccur ... until this morning. I've taken photos this time - the swelling you can see is simply fluid. The vet checked his teeth, heart and lungs and all are OK. Has anyone experienced this before?
  3. Does anyone have a dog currently being prescribed Trental? I have a 6 year old whippet who was on the medication for 4 years because of thrombosis of the ear tips. She suffers from ulcers that have progressively eroded away the tips of her ears. 12 months ago I took her off the medication because of a prolonged bout of diarrhea (Trental is a known intestinal irritant). Also, I was becoming wary of the continued use of the drug because of some statements made by the vet dermatologist. For example, he suggested trying an alternative (known cancer causing) ointment on her ear tips to reduce inflammation, and he had mentioned another dog that was taken off the medication because the dog had liver problems and he thought that it was "on so many pills, we took it off the trental". She's been off Trental for 12 months now, but has just had a relapse (although she also relapsed while ON the medication - another reason for me deciding to discontinue its use). I trust the vet specialist but had a feeling that my whippet was becoming a "guinea pig" (if you know what I mean!). Am I worring unnecessarily - does anyone have a dog that has been on Trental for many years? Does anyone know of long term side effects? I don't want her to suffer liver or kidney damage in old age. Thanks
  4. I have a 6 year old whippet who was spayed at 8 months of age. Occasionally (once, twice a day) she'll start furiously licking her vulva. She'll be in her bed at the time or on the couch, so I don't think the licking is anything other than a form of self grooming. However when checking to see that she wasn't attempting to clean up some sort of discharge, I noticed that a pink shiny lump was protruding from the vagina. It's about 5mm in diameter and will retract back into the vagina a few minutes after she's stopped licking. I should say that I first noticed this about 12 months ago but have been wondering whether I should raise the issue with the vet. Could she have some sort of vaginal prolapse after the spay operation? Or perhaps this is this a normal part of her anatomy? Sorry - I've only had males before! P.S. Attached is a picture of my sweet Emma (who has numerous health problems - pineal thrombosis, PRA and a mouth full of broken teeth after trying to break out of her cage at the vet), but is otherwise a happy joyous companion who isn't happy unless she has a toy in her mouth!)
