Some Questions About Dog Ownership
MolassesLass replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
where does your dog live? My dogs have access to outside whenever someone is home but otherwise they're shut in the house (since the psycho neighbour threatened us). How often do you walk your dog? Pretty much never, they don't need walks for mental or physical stimulation. Do you walk your dog rain, hail or shine? Nope, if I am going to take one for a walk, it will be in perfect weather conditions only. -
Poor Chase and poor you Kaffy!

The picture doesn't look abnormal to me, it looks likely regular medium/long coated dog hair. I have Border Collies (medium coat) and have never had dags unless a particularly bad case of the runs happen. I've also found, wherever I've cut dog hair, it always grows back longer and thicker than before.

Motorhomes are so fantastic to travel in, be great if that company does allow dogs!

Getting Serious And Charging Appropriately
MolassesLass replied to rocco's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
Sorry but I hope everyone ignores this! The "shoot and burn brigade" are the only ones I buy from. I want photographs not artworks - so no one is stealing my patronage from your business, if the hobbyists aren't around then I just won't buy anything. IME, it's not the hobbyists or cheap businesses that de-value artwork photography. It's the ease of creating nice photos (to the untrained eye) with the technology in today's cameras and editing software. Why would you see great value in something that you feel you can do yourself? -

Ever Snuck The Dog Into A Motel?
MolassesLass replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
Time to review the forum rules FF, that post was way out of line. -
And then you have the opposite! My vets xray machine is broken, so we have to go to another practice for that atm. My vet wrote up notes on why the xrays were needed but the vet at the other practice wasn't happy with that. So I showed her my boys limp by gaiting him outside and she proclaimed there was no limp (it was clearly visible!!!). She then started giving me a lecture on unnecessary GA's and how she'd taken an oath to "do no harm". I insisted they were done, pointed out how young and healthy he is - and she begrudging agreed. Well, didn't she have a back-peddle when the xray showed he'd clearly injured his knee - told me all about how when he was sedated they could see the limp. Worked out fine in this case but if I were a more submissive person....the poor dog, left with a painful injury.

Ever Snuck The Dog Into A Motel?
MolassesLass replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree with the others - if you break rules like this, you are a bloody scum bag! Every time some idiot tells themselves that the rules don't apply to them and their Fluffy - they make it that much harder for all dog owners. And motels should just lump it if your dog gets a dose of the runs or vomits? Or despite it being the worlds most perfectly behaved dog, just this one time it chews a hole in the wall? If your dog is so perfect, why don't you just explain this to the motel people and have the dog inside "legally"? -
What do you want to do with your dog? Are you a definite die-hard sports competitor or is she a companion dog only? Many dogs are desexed at 7 weeks by responsible rescues and breeders. Generally as long as they are 6 weeks or older and weigh 1kg or more; they can be desexed from a medical point of view. Like so many topics, people have very strong views about whether this is "too young" or not.

Are you in Qld or have you not set your state on your profile?

Oh, so fashion forward Jed! We did a test at obedience training once, with the dog heeling off-lead but the handler held the chain and made the zip noise to see if the dogs would correct their position. Some dogs did but not mine - not well trained enough? Probably.
-
I've never had a dog take any notice of any check-chain noise, so it wouldn't defeat the purpose for me. But I don't think the shoe-lace decoration adds anything either, so I wouldn't be getting one.

While I love my dogs and dogs in general I don't really agree with this concept of police dogs being given the same "rights" as human officers. I hope the pooch comes out of it ok.

Working/working Line Dogs As Pets
MolassesLass replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
In BCs I believe the majority of pet owners who end up with a non-ANKC dog, do so because those breeders don't give a hoot who gets a dog. And some because they thing a smooth coat is less mess than a rough coat. I like my breed to look like it was originally. -
Do You Do Heartworm Tests Before Using Meds?
MolassesLass replied to sandgrubber's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I don't lapse and start at 8 weeks so no need to test. When I was doing rescue, if I didn't know a dog had been on heartworm meds then I would test before administering. FYI the below message is on the HeartGard website. -
Thanks for the reply. Are they stiff like they would support the joint or is they only good for heating the joint? What size fits your greyhounds?
-
I've just seen these on CleanRun and am interested in them. Even if you haven't used them, what do you think?
-
I'm not competing at all at the moment but back when I was dedicated... I got out of my car for a tracking competitors meeting (at the ungodly hour of 4:45am) I slammed my pinkie in the car door. And I still competed with two dogs and laid track for a friend.

There is one on the north side as well. Starts with D. ETA: Dakabin

I asked for your solutions because I was interested in what you had to say. You were posting like someone who felt they had the magic bullet and if you did have it, I wanted to know. I didn't "rip you to shreds", I disagreed with your ideas. That's what people do in discussions - ask questions, share ideas, agree and disagree.
-
ETA: And I'm way ahead of ya, here's the first meeting for our first cross of the Toy Pug and Standard Pug.
-
Sounds very expensive and unworkable. Given that councils can't even enforce having every dog registered with them, they'd never manage anything else. They can't even enforce no Pitbulls - I was driving behind a car yesterday with a great big sign "Pig Dog Pups - Pitbull x Arab x American Bulldog" the owners are ignorant to the law or don't care - either way, it isn't working. Re #4 - Not everyone has access to an obedience club - have you ever lived rurally? - nor access to a club who's methods they can agree with. I agree that manners training (not obedience club stuff) is important but it simply isn't workable to insist every dog owner goes at all, let alone monthly. Do you really think that obedience training would prevent bites though? I'm certain dogs with obedience training have bitten before (and will in the future). Re #5 - Again, not every breed has a breed club at all, let alone one in every state or one accessible for every owner. But why do you think paying money to a breed club and being forced to interact with these people would stop dog bites? You seemed pretty sure earlier in this thread that the breeds were any that could be considered a bull breed - I'm really glad to see you're listening to the discussion and are retracting based on your lack of factual information. How would you see the determination of breeds to go on this list? By your earlier criteria of dogs that could cause fatal injuries, that would be just about every breed. And then, why do we not care about severe injuries and mental scarring. Even a 2kg Chi. can rip the bottom lip from a child's face leaving permanent disfigurement - this should matter too. Which would lead to making ALL breeds come under these very strict, time-consuming and expensive regulations you've suggested. Which leads (assuming pigs fly and they are enforced 100%) to a reduction in dog ownership and dogs IMO - not something I'll ever be asking for! No that's incorrect. Bite rate is the number of bites per number of dogs, this accounts for popular breeds. i.e. If there are 100 Toy Poodles in Australia and 99 attacks by Toy Poodles then the bite rate is 99%. If there are 10 Pitbulls in Australia and 1 attack by Pitbulls then the bite rate is 10% If there are 1000 Bullmastiffs in Australia and 10 attacks by Bullmastiffs then the bite rate is 10% When talking simply of number of bites, then breed numbers can bias the stats.
-
That's a very broad answer - what type of regulation?
-
Thanks for your answer but my question is for poodiful1. :D
