What Do You And Your Dog/s Do?
MolassesLass replied to KitKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Alrighty then, around here we do: Obedience Half-arsed attempts at agility and jumpers occasionally Herding Lure Coursing K9 Frisbee Will be doing the Endurance test this year and putting a puppy through conformation shows. Would like to soon try Tracking and HTM. -
As you know this is the type mine have always got (different vet, different ideas). I'm thinking it might be more efffective because it's probably a live vaccine and hence goes down the nose so that it goes straight into the lungs to fire off the immune reaction. And so the injectible one would be a killed vaccine. But that's just my theory, somone like Steve probably knows exactly....

Hmm, my experience with KC - My Molly is INVINCIBLE Ok, maybe not, but this time she managed to avoid it although she was at the same place that Bronx picked it up (we think the dog beach) and was there when it manifested itself and she's in whelp and she didn't get it. Yay Molly , poor Bronx (and KitKat). Oh dear, did I have red food colouring this morning?! Think I'd better go eat some lunch, see if a full stomach slows me down.

Where Do You Wash Your Dogs?

Merson - You don't have hydrobaths in the US? Or is it just that only professional grooming salons have that type of thing? -

No option for me. Backyard with the hose. -
I believe it does make a lot of dogs sick at first as it is a very rich meat and something to get used to. But introduced slowly most dogs will be fine. I've seen it in Coles recently and humans probably get the same reaction

Hello CockerPoppins, glad to see you here! Molly might be attending, but only watching, I will be at Steve Irwin's Reptil Park - yay! Nope, don't know anyone coming from the Gold Coast, sorry.
-
Yup, although I don't recall the dog exactly he ran at the last race according to the results page. Is this one of yours?
-
So what are the low protein BARF foods? I know lamb is off the list, but what else? And any vegies or anything that should be avoided? I've never had anything but BCs and although we like to keep them lean while growing they wouldn't have ever been much skinnier than Bronx looks (but they didn't put 5kg on in 3 weeks either!).

I think that's the name of the shop, it's across the road from where the Sunday markets are held (or on the same side as the big fruit markets) shop.
-
I've tried those Greenies, would like to hear from more people who have. While Molly enjoyed it, I found 'green thickshake' in the yard afterwards. ;)

What area? KitKat and I hit paydirt at a Rocklea butcher, they had turkey wings for about $2/kg and said they get turkey left-over bits from now until about 2 weeks after xmas. I haven't noticed any problems, especially if it's only a couple as a tooth clean rather than a meal. But it's always good to keep variety in a diet.

Part of the problem you're having with getting Harvey white teeth is that it sounds like he's a swallower (don't be rude! ;) ). One way of dealing with it is to cut it into smaller pieces that he can hoover down, the other is to try and teach him to chew (and thus clean those teeth) by giving him bits so big he couldn't possibly try to swallow it whole. As far as chicken necks go, it is safe to feed quite a few at a time, I regularly give up to half a full meal of necks (so about 350g).

My point is that I dispute most pet owners with entire dogs do check them over properly. But agree to disagree. Sorry Kit! ;)
-
There's a big difference between humans and dogs. Most humans will check themselves for cancer and go see a doctor as soon as they find a lump or feel unwell and as such can be cured generally before it becomes terminal. Most dogs - a) Don't have the opposable thumbs to do adequate mammary or testicular checks themselves b) don't have the vocal ability to tell their owners what they've found c) don't remember the directions (nor know how to drive) to take themselves to the doctor/vet d) Don't have owners that do these things for them Tell me, do you roll your dogs balls between the tips of your fingers weekly to check for any lumps? And do tell me how you'd check a females uterus? Mutilation?! ;)
-
You think a sexual being is happier spending it's whole life with unsatisfied urges and unessecary hormone shifts? No, but it's kinda hard to check for uterine cancers myself, so perhaps I'd rather it wasn't there, possibly slowly silently killing my bitch (with a tumour or pyo). And who the hell would want a bitch that cycled unless they were breeding from her, do you really understand the pains they are! How many owners of entire dogs do you think actually check regularly that their bitch isn't developing mammary tumours or is giving their boy dogs a thorough nut check to feel for cancers? There's no "may not" about it, if you have testicles you have a chance of getting testicular cancer.

I'm assuming due to the smiley you are joking, but just in case..... Why would you care if he didn't lift his leg, what difference does it make to him being your companion? I really don't get all this macho crap with regards to male dogs, he has to have balls and has to 'piss like a man' - cripes like the dog cares!

I use Squirt (fairly new line, made by the Fudge hair people as the CEO is a big dog lover apparently) for my guys. I use Dr Harry sensitive stuff for all the rescues that pass through (it's a lot cheaper). Plus I got Plush Puppy extras (coat conditioner, coat sunscreen, etc). I probably spend 100 times more on dog 'beauty' products than I do on me beauty products. ;)
-
Charlie the rescue was done about 3 months ago at the age of about 5 years. He not only has a lump (someone suggested the tied off bit gets scar tissue around it) and still a lot of excess skin. Probably nothing to worry about.

1. what do you feed? Lamb - ribs, neck, shanks Pork - hocks mostly Chicken - necks, wings, frames Turkey - necks, wings Beef - neck mostly Organ meat Fruit & Vegie mush Supercoat Active 2. how often? Every night 3. how much? %3 of bodyweight 4. what breed, age, sex and weight is your pet? Border Collies, 15-25kgs, 2-6 years, males and females 5. where do you purchase your ingredients from? Supermarkets and butchers 6. have you always fed your dog this diet, or did you change over to it gradually? if yes, how did your dog react? Always fed. But I have to change all the rescues over and I do it straight away. I've had no problems. 7. what have been the advantages and disadvantages? Advantages: Cheaper for multiple dogs, smaller, firmer less stinky poos, better condition on dogs. Disadvantages: can be hard to find right stuff, takes time to prepare 8. have you seen changes in your dog, ie. coat, energy levels? Better condition overall
-
Hehehe, I don't think so. If they are putting on weight with the current feeding amounts though you probably don't need to. Or else change the type of food and feed more. Age has a lot to do with it too. KitKats 45kg Rottie X eats less than half of what my 20kg Border does because he's about 8 and she's only 2.
-
Isn't 3% of 40kg 1.2kg (and 2% 800g)? Doesn't sound like the right amount as my 20kg girl gets 600-700g a day (she is super active).
-
An Australian site would be easier though, try http://www.drianbillinghurst.com/order_aus.html - print the form and send it off.

I feed at night because I don't have time in the morning, especially when I have a few rescues about as well. I don't like self feeding as I feel it makes life hard, your dog learns that it doesn't have to eat straight away which can be a problem when you take them to stay somewhere or you need to know exactly how much they are eating.
