  1. C5 - Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Kennel Cough, Bordetella. C6 - C5 + Coronavirus and Leptospirosis C7 - C6 + Bordetella bronchiseptica There's quite a lot of evidence that KC/Bordetella components aren't nessecary nor particularly useful. Leptospirosis can be a problem in Australia, mostly in Qld according to statistics. It's a very big problem up around Mackay according to this vet. But in saying that, I've never heard of a case in all my years. Coronavirus: SourceI have been looking into the PetPlan insurance and noted this: Most of us would not be vaccinating against this and so wouldn't be covered for it, if on a PetPlan insurance policy.
  2. :D Wait until KitKat sees this thread, I swear her boy must have the record for the most amount of evacuation at the beach. My girl Molly seems to learn a little from her mistakes. She rarely throws up (isn't it foamy?!) these days and only gets a little whoosing out the bum.
  3. It's called the doggy beach total interior evacuation. Dogs drink the seawater and all the salt makes them drool and vomit (cleaning out the front end). This also seems to rush right the digestive system and give them watery poo (cleaning out the other end). Some say that a dogs anal sphinctor is a little loose and that all the waves push water up there which drops back out and causes the poo sprays. Not sure. Either way, it's all fairly harmless to them, although trying to stop them drinking the water and giving them a clean water drink afterwards to rehydrate is important. The worst part about it is standing there while your dog sprays and then having to pick up a bucket-full of sand to make sure you pooper scoop while have the beach watches. :D
  4. No info on the food sorry but this typo on website: ...had me Damn typing skills.
  5. They don't remove the penis but the testicles are removed and as KitKat says the scrotum will eventually tuck up and dissappear. Here's some good information.
  6. The rear dew claws are not always only attached by skin. I've had a few rescues with rear dew claws (some skin, some bone) and all are removed at desexing time. It costs about $30 extra with our vets to have skin dew claws removed, up to $75 for bone ones. I have never had front dew claws removed, they just don't seem to be as prone to catching on things.
  7. The first level of ANKC herding is an Instinct test for which the dog gains a certificate not a title. Two passes under two different judges is required (dogs must be 6 months or over and an approved herding breed to compete, bitches in season can still compete but run last). After that is the Herding Test for which a HT title is awarded (again two passes under two different judges). Instinct Test Description and Test Elements The dog is brought into the arena on a long line approximately 2 – 5 metres in length. At some point while on the line, the dog must demonstrate a stop (down, sit or stand) and a recall before the line is dropped or removed. A dog, which cannot be recalled, shall not be let off line. Dogs must be immediately removed from the ring if physical force is necessary to protect stock from the dog. It's best to get some professional lessons before entering, just to make sure you know what needs to happen.
  8. Oops, must have been thinking of someone else. Yup at 5 months, you've still got a few adult teeth coming through and so the ear may well be up again tomorrow even. It's a pain thing, not every dog will do it, but quite a few will get a funny look to their ear with pain in the area (due to infection or bruising).
  9. Ears are very much influenced by teething, they will drop and lift until teething is completed. By 7-8 months this should be done. I belive your pup is older than this and if, like you said, his ears have been up, perhaps he currently has an ear infection or sore jaws or something like that which is making the ear droop.
  10. Do you wait until your lab cross pees and poops EVERY morning before you bring her back in? If she does not go, what do you do? How often do you take her out for breaks? Is it only in the morning that she forgets? How long is it between her pooping outside and then pooping again inside? How regular is your routine in the morning?
  11. I use the big toe-nail clippers on young pups, but they all soon need doggy ones. I got a $2 pair from Solly's or similar many many years ago and with regular oiling they are still going fine. They are the guillotine type rather than the parrot beak type (which I really dislike for no particular reason ). EFS
  12. I'm a very nervous trialler, in fact I don't think I take more than 2 breaths the entire Novice run through. Oops! I've had a few judges say "Smile" or "I'm not going to kill you!" I look and act so terrified. Apparently, it's quite funny to watch....KitKat? Due to this (and a lack of practice) my girl and I have only gained her Sweepstakes and haven't been back. My excuse is I'm currently trying to get her herding back on track and obedience work tends to work in opposition. Rescue Remedy (the spray) enabled me to get that sweepstakes, as before that, the moment I stepped through that little gate I completely change my body language and my poor girl goes "OMFG! What the hell has my poor mum so scared" and the forging girl I have in training, lags a couple of metres behind. The edge of the anxiety is taken off and your brain is a little clearer. Good Luck and let us know how it goes
  13. GSD is short for German Shepherd Dog. This and plenty of other terms are explained in the DOL Forum Glossary I'll let KitKat answer your other questions.
  14. Have a read of this site to begin learning about a fully balanced home diet for your dog. It can be a lot of work, but very rewarding in terms of results shown with the health of your dog. You can buy some books from the site to help learn about BARF as well. American (I think) word for dry dog food. Edit: Corrected link
  15. PetWise is a very good pet store, very friendly staff who really care about the animals. I love taking the rescues in for the cheap self-serve hyrdrobaths and they love the attention they get from the staff. I really like the look of the Advance dry food, it is one of the more expensive ones though. I think you'll find if you ask one of the staff at PetWise, they will be able to give you some help with a new food brand and if you take the pup in, feeding amounts. BTW - I was at PP not you. Try not to be so worried about people being mean, you're getting worked up over nothing.
  16. Unless you have money tree's out the back, I'd find another place to buy my pet food at (in fact, buy everything at). PP not only is a pet store chain that sells live animals (not good ) but they tend to be very over-priced. Which side of Brisbane are you? We can probably recommend a good alternative.
  17. Sounds like my housemate. He whinges about the fresh vegie mush the dogs get while I cook microwave vegies for us too. EFS
  18. Turkey tails (and plenty of other good BARF supplies) can be purchased at the Brisbane Meat Markets at Rocklea (butcher). They're on Sherwood Rd across from where the markets run. My BC's can sometimes finish the whole lamb neck bone, sometimes it's too big, they seem to be right on the edge of being consumable for a dog their size.
  19. You're not upsetting anyone, we're just trying to help. Now I'm really intrigued. I can't imagine any brand of tinned dog food not going off for 6 months. And even for a very small toy puppy, surely more than one teaspoon a meal?! How much does you puppy weigh? (I'm not accusing you of anything Moogs, just a bit mistified at the advice you have been given so far) You should probably stop softening the dry food, he needs to start crunching it to keep his teeth clean. And at his age he either is just starting to get his adult teeth or already has them, so it's important to keep them clean.
  20. An older diet? Your pup is 3 months old and should be being fed on the "Puppy" range of commercial foods (if your are going to feed commercial foods) until about 12 months old. Perhaps earlier with a toy breed (6-9 months) but certainly not at 3 months! Please do post back with the brand name and amounts of food you are feeding your pup.
  21. DREMEN - ;) sorry to laugh but sweety, that's a healthy dog poo! You may have over done it a bit, but in general dog poos will get smaller and harder when on a BARF diet. I'd almost pick them up without gloves they're so innocous. This is for a few reasons, but basically they're smaller due to not having a lot of grain filler like commercial foods that runs straight through and they're harder because it's full of a lot of digested bone. It is good to see a dog straining a reasonable amount to poop. This means the anal sacs are being emptied too. ETA: You do need to feed other types of meat as well as fruit and vegies and a few other important ingredients. Have you been feeding these or has it been 100% chicken for 2 days?
  22. What are you currently feeding and what do you want to change to? In general however, food changes should be done gradually to prevent upset tummy's. Start by 3/4 current food with 1/4 new food and feed for a day or two then go to half current, half new for a few days then 1/4 current, 3/4 new for a few days and then all new. Taking about 7-10 days to swap is probably a good time frame, some dogs can handle faster but it's probably better to take it slower rather than end up with an upset puppy.
