  1. According to CHOICE which tested a number of dog foods in 2002: And that all the following foods are AAFCO trialled ("This product has been tested successfully in feeding trials undertaken by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). It has the right amount of nutrients and energy and can claim to be a 'complete and balanced' pet food."). However, there are notes on the site about what this trialling includes. But use the information or not, it's an interesting and useful read IMO even if you don't think it applies.
  2. Not really. Australian dog foods get AAFCO certified too, which is the standard the site talks about rather than American laws. SuperCoat included. True for foods manufactured here, not so for the imported products.
  3. Interesting. I notice two items with "preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid" against them in the Nutrience Wholistic Giant Breed. Argh! Bloat already scares the heck out of me. But I guess the fact that it's fed as a small portion of the meal, the rest of which contains high protein fresh meat and bone should cancel it out. Good to know though. Sorry sandgrubber, for taking your topic off on a tangent.
  4. A large number of people have noticed the SC stopped working for their dogs, despite no change in ingredients on the bag. It was discussed in this thread. I only say "believe" because there has been no official statement that things have changed. Lucky you, I couldn't get the supplies at good prices so it is much cheaper for me this way too.
  5. Advance (Adult Chicken) contains chicken by-products, corn, chicken tallow and poultry by-products among it's ingredients though. I was surprised to find RC didn't stack up as well as I thought it would to the ingredients check. Nutro, Eagle Pack and Nutrience were the top three from my checking. ProPlan was also quite good. I haven't been able to check Optimum as it doesn't list ingredients online. ETA: Miranda, I'm not trying to be argumentative, but have you had a look at the dog food project site at all? There is some interesting information there about how ingredient splitting and dry vs wet weight can be used to make a product appear differently on the ingredient list. Given the foods you list above, probably not much surprised, but it's still good reading.
  6. Can't take credit for finding it, I found it when someone else posted a link here on DOL to it. One thing you might like to try is the Weaner or Edge products from Big Dog Pet Foods which is a "commercial" BARF mix (made by the same people who manufacture Dr Billinghurt's official product so they know the right ratios;)). It may be too high in fat for less active breeds and I'm sure it won't work for everyone, but it does wonders for my guys (and is so much easier for me). Me too, was quite insane really! SuperCoat has recently changed formula we believe. This has been noticed by a number of people who've fed SC for years (me included). It was a very good filler for a reasonable cost but I feed Nutrience now. My local pet supplies store gives 10% discount to CCCQ members, so it's not too bad in price.
  7. I take notice of the information from The Dog Food Project and picked the best food that I could afford from there.
  8. They will need a power adaptor to plug into our wall sockets and change the voltage.
  9. Which shop is this (PM me if you'd prefer)? Don't want to recommend it to anyone!
  10. Great toys, but definately must be removed before overly recycled. My dog's have a specific order in which to destroy a bottle. Chew the lid off first, then the lid ring, next rip off label, then chew bottle flat and ta-da, it's no longer interesting. My dog's don't seem to have had any issues with feeling unworthy either. :D
  11. Have you spoken with your herding instructor (or a herding instructor) about luring? I was told that luring should not be done with any dog you wish to herd with. Really don't want to encourage the chase drive.
  12. A DOLer who has seen this before, took what appeared to be fly larvea (maggots) for testing. They were larvea all right, DUNG BEETLE larvea. Makes sense for my situation.
  13. I had bought this toy for Duke, but he only likes to bark at the girls while they play. Ideally I'm hoping to make a stand to fit in the hole the clothesline uses to give the dogs more height and swing room, but this will have to do for now. YouTube Video
  14. Because my camera encodes in QuickTime (which has massive file sizes) I have just been uploading to YouTube and posting the link. YouTube loses some quality and makes it smaller but it's my best option atm. ETA: That's for videos to show on DOL.
  15. I certainly can tell the difference and last week located a hidden poop behind my shed. Not sure how long it had been there, 7 days at maximum. There was definately a mass of maggots inside (or under really), other poops only have dung beetles if anything. I had wondered whether it meant there was some undigested food coming through, but I guess it was just that I had missed it and given it a chance to 'age'.
  16. Which Royal Canin type are you after, you can usually get the info from the non-Aus RC sites. Maxi Light - This product contains 3100 kilocalories/kilogram or 270 kilocalories per cup ME (metabolizable energy) on an as fed basis (calculated). (cup = 88g) Mini Light - This product contains 3100 kilocalories/kilogram or 296 kilocalories per cup ME (metabolizable energy) on an as fed basis (calculated). (cup = 92g)
  17. When I got Molly I was feeding PAL dry and tins to my dogs. She did awful on it, always had upset tummy (gurling) and lots of wind. Moved to SuperCoat because it had no chemical additives or preservatives and she did much better. Then I read about BARF and thought it would make Molly do even better with no artificial items at all. Changed over and haven't looked back (although I do feed a "commercial" BARF mix and do still feed dry in addition although in very small amounts. Pink Panther, have a read on Dr Billinghurst's sites for information on feeding. He has books available too if you decide to give it a go. Dr Ian Billinhurst BARF World
  18. Yup, he looks great. Where do you get your Livermol from?
  19. Are you feeding her kelp/seaweed or livermol? Chocolate dogs usually require these to keep nice dark coats (as dark as genetics can accomodate) especially if they spend time in the sun.
  20. It seems to be too dark after it was loaded up. She has a weird habit of licking her crate and then she rests her mouth on it and exposes her teeth. Sometimes she continues to lick the bars with her mouth hanging open, it's really quite funny...when you can see it.
  21. Anyone know if this when purchased with the handle would still have the metal d-ring to attach a lead too? I hope to be able to get something with this order, just gotta eat Maggi noodles for a while.
