  1. It might pay to ask if there will be anyone monitoring the dogs overnight at your vets. Most vets I know have no one in attendence overnight and so I'd much rather a groggy dog at home with supervision than at the vets alone all night.
  2. I've not yet seen any scientific studies that found a link between age of desexing and incidence of incontinence. Only that desexing can lead to it. As for my anecdotal evidence, my first litter had 5 bitches spayed at 7 weeks old and not one is incontinent. One bitch was desexed at 2 years and *may* be incontinent (we're still working through possibilities). I wouldn't concern yourself about spay incontinence in making your decision, there are other much more important factors. I would have no problem having a Staffy done at 5 months and I would certainly be listening to the breeder of my dog as to what is best for her.
  3. This place seems to. Or you could try contacting this company as it claims it is the "Sole Australian Agent" for Nutrience (it's parent company Hagen that is). No local distributers for you?
  4. Word of warning: don't rely on their "special order" service - your dog could be left very hungry.
  5. Yes, it turned out to be a bad thing. Meat, veggies and pasta mix - no bones.
  6. They seem to be teaching people how to feed their dogs a BARF diet (or at least a home made raw diet). I've not seen it all, so not sure if it's a good recipie being advised but if it is, it could be a good thing???
  7. Picture of label here. Picture of cage/compost bin here.
  8. I was told they were a one off purchase that is done for the whole country. Once the supply sent to each store is bought there is no more. They've been trying to source more stock since December last year. I managed to find a local store hiding two away in May that I got but it took a bit of ringing around. Quote the product number 3160000 (LC002 Waste Storage Cage) when calling so they know exactly what you are after.
  9. There was an article in Dog's Life not so long ago. It explained the sport and gave details to contact the person who wants to start Aussie clubs. But I can't seem to find the magazine, maybe try emailing and asking for the details?
  10. You could, if you wanted to, compete with your crossbred dog. You'd need to register it as an Associate Dog with the CCCQ (after this dog, no other crossbred you own could be registered) and then you can compete in agility, obedience, tracking etc. ADDA agility does not require CCCQ registration, nor do sports like flyball and canine disc. ANKC Obedience Rules (PDF) Page 10 says "All verbal commands must be in the English Language unless approved otherwise by the Judge."
  11. My topic from a few weeks ago has a link to the natural option - Spay Incontinence. It's a very good idea for anything IMO. Good luck.
  12. Be prepared for lots of opinions. Do do your own research, speak to a professional you trust and go from there. I believe the most commonly used is Stilboestrol tablets. A cheap medication that is synthetic hormones (basically HRT for dogs). Some dogs may need to try something else as this is the most conservative medication option. I was given a list that were significant but my vet also said in 30+ years he's only had one dog suffer side effects that resolved when the treatment was stopped. That doesn't mean that your dog won't have any though. ;) Many people will say no, many will say yes. I haven't made the decision myself yet but I probably would (due to the experiences of trusted contacts). Seven is middle-aged for a mediumish dog IMO. A GSD's lifespan is around 13 years and Kelpies around 14 years. While searching for incontinence treatments a few weeks ago, I came across it. It's supposed to work after a 28 day treatment (costing $50). Which would be great but if it didn't premanently resolve the problem the Stilboestrol would work out cheaper (if you are happy with the possible risks and their likelyhoods).
  13. Oh ok, phew! We'll stick to using the verb version then, no god there. I think my dogs do think I'm godlike, I don't mind.
  14. Does "esp." not stand for "especially"? What have I inadvertently said?
  15. I'm loathe to use the word "respect" because I think it implies thinking that just isn't happening (like saying "jealousy" instead of "resource guarding"). And I guess others can't say "fear" because of the extremeness that can be implied which isn't happening.
  16. PF, I think the key is to ask yourself WHY the dogs defers to you ("respects you"). Because it "fears" the consequences otherwise surely (perhaps "dislikes" is the better word given the definition you've posted of fear)? Maybe alpha-wannabes need to actually perform the correction rather than just posture it will happen (like a true alpha will) because tha pack doesn't "fear" the consequences, meaning the dog won't submit and thus forcing the alpha-wannabe to actually challenge. I'm not a good dog trainer but I love discussing and theorising about behaviour, hope you all don't mind.
  17. Really?! So do you have some intelligent words on why my post is all those things or have you, like Tarmons and noneybur read what you think is there instead of what is actually there. I'm quite happy to withdraw my concerns over the raffle if it can be shown that something was done to guarantee that every entrant was suitable for the dog in question. But I can only assume from the lack of interest in answering the questions that there was nothing. As above:
  18. Exactly why Purely-Positive Training is destined to fail IMO. To me there is: Purely-Positive Trainers: No corrections at all (negative consequences), just praise for doing the right thing (positive consequences). Balanced Trainers: Uses appropriate corrections and praise for doing the right thing. (I'd class you in here Leopuppy04). Negative Trainers: Uses corrections but very little or no praise. I think to a certain extent the word "positive" when it comes to dog training is now being used to say you aren't a negative trainer rather than that they actually train via the "Purely-Positive" method. I'm a positive trainer but I don't train the Positive method. ETA: Do dogs really "respect" people or wouldn't "respect" = "fear" for animals? Back to just reading.
  19. No, yet I knew about and could quite easily have entered the raffle by buying one of the magazines mentioned. I didn't. I have no idea if this person is "one of Australia's top working Kelpie Kennels" but if they are then they already have. What were the entry requirements other than filling out the form available in the magazines? What was the method used to check each entrant's suitability to owning a dog and owning this dog? I have neither implied the dog won't be worked nor have I passed judgement on the winner. Go have a bex and a lie down to see if the hysteria passes then try actually reading my post before replying again.
  20. Ah no, it doesn't. That simply shows you have no idea what the objections were about. It doesn't matter squat that this time the dog *appears* to have gone to a suitable home (how are you "sure he has gone to a good home", do you know the winner personally?) nor that the person who won it recently lost a dog. The fact is, a live creature was a raffle prize where any unsuitable person could have won it. And if they didn't want to give it back to the breeder, unless they were RSPCA reportable, there's nothing the breeder could do about it. Just how pleased would you have been if the dog went to someone who intended to use the dog for eating? Or to the suburban family with no yard who just wanted a free dog (who insisted on keeping said dog miserable in their yard because it's their prize)? It had nothing to do with the dog being a working kelpie and no one ever said that there's no chance it will work out for the best. The problem is there are many many chances it can work out badly. So I repeat: The breeder and everyone else involved should be bloody ashamed of themselves.
  21. Don't forget to treat mum at the same time. She is ingesting the worms from the pups poo all the time and can pass worms straight back to the pups.
  22. Just in case the Flyballers haven't seen this:
