Topic Change - Now E-collar Question
MolassesLass replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks for the reply Erny. A 30 min morning walk and in the afternoon a small amount of fetch training (he's not proficient at this skill yet) - that's Monday to Friday. On the weekend he gets 45 - 60 minute walk one day and an hour long visit to a dog park the other day. They do 5 - 10 minutes of training a day 4 - 5 days a week. Things like sit, drop and stay. When they leave he is happy - tail wagging, tongue out. As they drive out he runs to the fence towards next door's dog (doesn't bark but he used to). He's very excited when they get home and fairly regularly urinates. What I observed of him in his first home was pacing and snapping at imaginary flies. Dug up and chewed apart irrigation system. Chewed the outdoor furniture and anything left outside with him. Knew sit, shake and to come to his name - nothing else. Was barking at night at seemingly nothing, could have been bats though as I observed him at my place chasing birds across the sky and barking at them. ETA: I know I should probably be getting a professional in person in, but right now I can't afford it and would like to get started until I can. -
16 month old desexed male BC Was kept in a small backyard and seldom walked, no toys, minimal human interaction (though someone was home 99% of the time) up until 13 months old when given bacl for (totally suprising ) destroying things, digging, being out of control and barking. Has since spent one month back with me and then one month on trial. Has started sitting at front fence while owners are at work and intermittently barking (calling for owners?). Has also destroyed cane chairs, cane basket and ripped up all bedding. Lives with another dog, gets walked morning and night and is being trained at home. Owners are at work approximately 10 hours a day weekdays. Does it sound more likely that he's not getting enough stimulation still or separation anxiety?

Agree with PF about the lack of bone and also that offal should be a fairly small part of the diet as too much can cause issues (esp. liver). The diet may be lacking and perhaps that's why after a short time your dog went off it. May feel like it's not giving her what she craves and so she doesn't want to bother eating it (being a fussy eater means the food itself probably doesn't motivate her). Sometimes heating the food a little can help, put the food in a bowl which is placed in a larger bowl with warm water in it. I find this the easiest way to warm the food without risking cooking anything (esp. the bone).

I think any of those dog rolls are akin to roll sandwich meat. i.e. full of preservatives, fat, sugar and salt. Plus for dogs, there is no crunching needed to clean the teeth. Not a fan. EFS

The ANKC agility rules state that the height card must be gained "not more than two months before the trial" (rule 4.2). Do you train at a club where you could access two judges to do the measuring? ANKC Rules page

I train with jinkispirit (though I've been REALLY slack lately) so they'll give you all the info you need hilaryo.

ADAA Shop Order Form lists a measuring stick for $120.

Not if you're tracking a pups growth...or get a new dog etc. I've only been able to find them for sale from the US, I'd really love to know of any selling in Aus. ETA: There are (US) instructions here to make your own.

Sorry to hear of his passing Cala.

Dry food for breakfast and BARF for dinner.

Most rescue organisations (RSPCA, AWL and private) desex puppies before they go to new owners. Some breeders also do this, as they feel there is no problem for the pup and desexing contracts can't be enforced legally. I desex my BC pet pups at around 7 weeks of age. There are many articles available on the web with information on the pros and cons of desexing at this age. I would be a little hesitant with a RR, as they are quite a large dog but I would speak with the breeder about it and ask about other pups that were done at that age (after educating myself).

Bathing Large Dogs?
MolassesLass replied to Miss BeRidgierent's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I wash my Bullmastiff outside with the hose. -
It depends on the vets policy, some will ask, some do unless you say not to and some won't do the op without doing the tattoo.

No probs Jey, I like to spruik any business I find worth it. We have a nice big deep freezer just for dog stuff so we can get the cheap bulk deals.

Nup haven't tried camel. Duke is on the Duck mix, it keeps him looking really solid. The BCs are on the Aussie mix which is roo and emu.
-
I get all our dog meat from Canine Country, I can see roo chunks for $4.30kg in 1kg lots or $4.10kg in 5kg lots. I feed the composite (BARF) mixes and various bones to my lot. They have a store on the north side at Burpengary but would probably deliver to you for a big enough order.

Placement Of Tracking Items
MolassesLass replied to afromaiko's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
In trials the rules state that an item must not be placed on a turn or within 25 metres either side of a turn. So if the dog learns to expect a turn where there is an article they're going to have troubles in a trial. Are you using the articles to signal the turn to yourself or are you using flags for such? -

Need A Bark Control Collar
MolassesLass replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
As I don't have the time for lessons, I was intending to get the type that auto-adjust. I've found a cheaper one here. -
Situation: I have a puppy I bred being returned to me (my first one  ) and he's being returned due to destructive habits and barking -- both issues due to not enough stimulation. He will be staying with me for at least a few months so that I can train him but I have a very picky neighbour on one side and can not wait for him to learn, I must not have any barking immediately. I've got a thread in the marketplace to hopefully borrow or buy a second-hand one. I've only ever used a citronella collar to try and control excessive barking but that didn't work in the slightest with that dog, so I'm hesitant to go that method again. I believe the other methods are sounds, ultrasonic vibrations, cold air jet or electric. Comments on what is the most likely to work in any situation? Recommendations on brands/models (remembering that I will probably only use this for this one dog for a few months)? Perhaps this one: http://www.dreamdog.com.au/canipulse.php
