Harnesses That Manage Pulling
MolassesLass replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
This looks interesting in that it's not controlling around the neck which I simply will not recommend. Thanks. Interesting thoughts, will ensure their chiro keeps an eye on those areas if one is used. Yes Tony and yours is a great way to deal with something. However, since I specifically asked for information on harnesses for management, surely it would be obvious that management and not elimination of the issue is what the owners of the dog have chosen to go with (for their own reasons) so your post really adds nothing to the discussion. But thanks anyway. -

Thanks guys but I'm only interested in harness types. Or is there a Halti harness? -

As I would. But if someone who knows nothing about snake bites and was told by a health professional to take their dog home they can't really be blamed. The vet can though. Maybe but when a bunch of people tell me the health professional is wrong I would seek a second opinion or demand the original one did something more if they were the only one available. I'm not saying these two pups necassarily were in agony and cruelly treated but I can understand people's frustration at the lack of action. -

I'd have the patient in the care of health professionals. There oxygen can be given to help breathing, intravenous fluids, pain relief and sedatives. None will assist with the venom itself but all will help the patient to recover from it's effects if they are going to be able to. -

I was told that the each judges interpretation of a pause will differ which is why although my dogs did it naturally it was better to teach a more obvious indication. Maybe for those with a schutzhund eligble breed - doesn't matter for the rest of us. Anyway, I'll back out now, as Schutzhund tracking is not my thing.
-
ML - Im talking about articles on the track, not about seek back or retrieving articles/gloves in obedience. Are we talking about the same thing? The articles on the track, the dog tracks your footsteps and than finds an article (piece of leather) and is to drop (no command) once it finds it with the article between its front paws. I was adviced NOT to play tug with the articles, as apparently last thing you want is the dog actually picking it up. I havent taught the articles on the track as yet, and when time comes to train I will just follow one trainers advice. But Im interested in different methods how people teach this. Yes talking about tracking articles. Are you talking about ANKC or Schutzhund tracking though? The dog is required to "indicate" the articles in ANKC tracking which I thought I had been told can be covered by the dog stopping at or retrieving the article.
-
Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm doing but am very interested in tracking. I have been encouraging play with articles at home. Tossing the articles and getting the dog to retrieve and play tug with them. I also place the dog in a stay and put articles around the lounge room then get the dog to return each to me. I also place articles on the track when we train, sometimes with food under, sometimes not so as not to have the dog expecting it. My dogs have all so far naturally stopped to sniff longer at the article but I have been told it's not enough to guarentee a pass so I use a command to get them to wait at the article until I am there or return it to me (different methods for different dogs). Very interested to hear from others.

You can also get the official rule books for all ANKC events from the ANKC site here.

Does it matter if they are current or not? Mine hasn't been used for years, but it would still be on some dogs pedigrees, so I would think that someone else wouldn't be able to use it. The ANKC will allow reuse after a prefix has lapsed for a certain number of years I believe. -

I have a copy of the ANKC Border collie database and could give you all the prefixes from that, I couldn't tell you which are still current though. -

Topic Change - Now E-collar Question
MolassesLass replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Jack has learnt very quickly from the anti-bark collar which is fantastic, however his owners are now thinking it's unfair that their other dog barks (he is almost always the one who starts it) and are considering using the collar on him. I'm concerned as the other dog Rocky is 11 years old and is a 5kg mini-foxie cross. He starts the barking but being so small people don't tend to hear him like they hear Jack. They are using a BC-50 Innotek collar which simply states "Suits small to medium sized barking dogs". Should I be right in being concerned about using this collar on a dog as small and old as Rocky? -
I walk at my pace but I let them stop, sniff and mark as they like. If I get sick of standing still before they've finished smelling then they have to move on.

Topic Change - Now E-collar Question
MolassesLass replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I went around last night to visit and some of the information (passed to me from owners through my brother) was wrong. And upon seeing him and talking to them, I think it's just boredom too. His barking is at the neighbours dog when the neighbour throws the ball (against the in-between fence) during the day for his dog. And it's Rocky (a tiny mini foxie) who starts it but Jack barks longer and is much louder so is the one that attracts attention. He barks at the front fence only when someone walks past with a dog. The people who are complaining are dole bludging stay at homers, other neighbours don't think Jack is a problem. But I've advised to train him to ignore the stimulus when they are home and they are also beginning to use an anti-bark collar. They weren't too worried about the destruction itself, just thought it meant they weren't doing enough for him. Advised them to do more training, gave them some different types of toys to try and encouraged them to start some sports when they can. Thanks so much for the advise.
