Reducing Exercise To Assist Separation Anxiety
MolassesLass replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Perhaps the intention was to reduce the dog's fitness levels so that when it is exercised it's far easier to tire out (tired dog is a calm dog). So intead of having a dog that is still ready to go after a 5km run, it is asleep after a 1km walk. I did a Google search but even in the wide expanses of the net, no one is advocating no exercise for anxious dogs. -
Yup, not getting the message now.

Petwise stock it, they have stores in Canon Hill, Macgregor, Rothwell and Underwood. ETA: I'm getting a request to login to http://www.forums.ozpets.com.au in this thread only - is there something in your signature that could be causing this Aaronwood?

The DNA test wouldn't be testing breed but parentage. If you have two ANKC papered AmStaffs as the parents of your unpapered dog and a DNA test proves those are the parents, then that dog is an AmStaff according to council law.

Being a habit is something I hadn't considered, interesting, thanks. There is a real dog with the described behaviour, the owners were advised before the first post was made. Any new knowledge that was gained would have been considered for future situations. For instance, I've already learnt that other people think a dog marking and a dog marking when being harnessed are two very different situations. Yes, is inside when owners are home. He's never pee'd inside other than in submission/excitement and now the marking. Thanks to all who replied.

Me saying I would do X in Y situation is an opinion. Me saying I think you should do X in Y situation is advice. There is a difference to me, but nevermind.

Why lift the leg rather than just pee sitting as the sumissive/excitement peeing usually is though? It seems to me a far more conscious action. I was wondering if he's protecting his possession from the wide world and this is why it's done as they head out for a walk. BTW they have worked on calming him and he hardly ever excitement pees for walks now. They get the harness out and let him run his sillys off, then when he can sit himself down still, they put the harness on. Then again wait for the sillyness to stop and once he's sitting clamly they head off. I only said the dog has deliberatly cocked his leg on his owners more than once and that's still the case, I've simply divulged when it happened. But that's of no consequence to me, so I'm happy to say it's totally different now. I don't want advise! I want to know what you would do if presented with the situation described. I want to know what you think is going on from the details given. Go ahead and assume and theorise to your hearts content, no dog will suffer due to it, I can promise that.

Which is why I tried my best to make this a "discussion of dog behaviour and training methods for something particular" thread rather than a "help me fix this problem" thread - though I'm not sure what's so different. I know training problems are very hard if not impossible to solve over the internet and I don't expect anyone to. I'm just looking to learn and keep up to date from a wide variety of sources to make sure I am offering the best in-person help I can and because the why's and how's of dog training interest me.

 Dog is not incontinent, does not mark in the house but does still submission/excitement pee (like when the cat scares him or when going for a walk). He lifts his leg sometimes at home and always when out. He is lifting his leg when getting his harness on to go for a walk or when getting a good pat - so I'm thinking it could be excitement but I can't imagine why he lifts his leg to do it. A few times when he first arrived he lifted his leg on the other dogs head but hasn't done that for ages. It's very interesting.

Early entries and tshirt orders close today! -
My note is a response to not being able to ask a dog training question on DOL without simply getting 50 posts telling you to go see a behavourist/behavouralist/trainer and nothing else. It's not helpful and while sometimes nessecary, it has been taken too far IMO on DOL. No professional has been or will be paid for this issue (though of course professional opinion is welcomed). Taken on board means I've considered it, decided it's not worth it and don't need to hear it again.
-
PLEASE NOTE: Recommendations to see a behavourist/behavouralist/trainer are not needed here - this recommendation is implied with everything on DOL, I'm aware of this and already have taken it on board. What would you do if your dog started deliberately lifting his leg on you? In particular this almost 2 year old boy (desexed at 7 weeks) has tried it on his male owner and was roused at and has sinced tried it on his female owner more than once.

Flags For Tracking Training
MolassesLass replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks peeps. Making them sounds so easy I'm embarassed I had to ask, I guess I was hoping for the lazy, buy them, solution. I'm not a fan of bending over and don't own an angle grinder so I've bought some 1.2m dowel and big nails. I'm drilling holes then glueing the nails into the dowel. Will fence paint to preserve the wood and thumb-tack a flag on top. Will try and remember to post pictures when I'm done. -
Britian's Ban's On Pit Bulls Extended
MolassesLass replied to tybrax's topic in General Dog Discussion
No liver, black, white or brindle dogs?! Wow. -
I need some flags for training and I've seen some corner flags (for soccer) online that would do the job but they are around $70 for 4. Where did you buy flags or how did you make your own?

Obedience Scent Discrimination And Tracking
MolassesLass replied to Kynan's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It makes logical sense that the article would be a lot stronger smelling than the track (esp. if the tracklayer doesn't wash the articles) but I haven't noticed my dogs having trouble - maybe they've just learnt how to overcome it. -

I would just train both as a retieve, nothing in the rules to say you can't. -
Do You Consider Obedience "work"?
MolassesLass replied to Just Midol's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If someone uses the phrase "my dog is working well today" then it's ridiculous for the "working dogs are the only proper dogs" people to get shirty. If someone uses the phrase "this is my dog's pedigree" then it's ridiculous for the "ANKC are the only proper dogs" people to get shirty. If someone uses the term "working dog" to imply a stock dog when it's not, then it's wrong. If someone uses the term "pedigree dog" to imply ANKC registered when it's not, then it's wrong. But to use the words as they mean, is not wrong. Thanks for asking! -
Do You Consider Obedience "work"?
MolassesLass replied to Just Midol's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Doing obedience or any sport is working as far as the dictionary definition goes but I would not think obedience dog when someone said "I have a working dog". Some people seem to have decided that "working dogs" are the only "proper" dogs and it somehow makes them better than everyone to use the term. These people thus get quite shirty when anyone else uses the word (though a correct usage) which is plain ridiculous. -
That looks like fun.
