  1. So you think it is ok to bring food into dog parks but not squeaky toys? If dog owners are expected to call their dogs away from food, shouldn't they be able to call them away from toys as well? Food is something you control and normally a reward that is given and eaten right then and there. Not something that is thrown away from you and into a mix of dogs that you have no idea of their drive. And I did say it should be Ok but that I won't bring food into an off lead dog park anymore due to past experiences. I don't expect anyone elses dog to do anything. I have a certain level of behaviour I expect from my own dogs but I can't be certain of how other owners have trained their own dogs in a public park, so why take the risk? I agree - no difference between food and toys, if other dogs are expected to ignore one type of reward then they should be expected to ignore all. I'd like people to call their dog if it is annoying me and my dog, whether that be because I have food or any other reason. My dogs cannot leave others toys alone so I won't go in if someone is doing this (or training because people who train in dog parks are nazis IME). My ideal would be for parks to be used just for dog play - no training, no private ball games, no on-lead walking with dog to be left totally alone, etc - but for all dogs to be well socialised and owners knowledgable and observant.
  2. I too won't let a dog graze no matter what age. Depending on working hours I found I could feed 3 meals a day when needed by feeding at 7am, 4pm and 10pm. Though by 8 weeks most of my pups (BCs) are used to just 2 meals (6:30am, 6:30pm) and we stick to that for life.
  3. No way would I go to a regular (non-emergency) and wait around until a vet is available. Not only is my time more important to me than that, I think it is a safety risk having lots of animals in the waiting room at once.
  4. Thanks MrsD and jinkispirit, our equal 3rd at the Nationals was huge - it was only Jazz's second competition with her first being the day before the nationals qualifying rounds. But then I let her get fat and she couldn't get off the ground for the WDG qualifying. MrsD, I thought one of the dock dogs was Jarrah at first, looked a lot like him I thought.
  5. The World Dogs Games was like a grand final, so you had to actually qualify to make the grand final - people might not realise that. So although there might be a lot of other dogs trialling, you only saw the ones that qualified. That was mostly BC's for flyball and frisbee - it wasn't intential just how it happened. For frisbee, we would love to see more types of dogs participating but yes the sport does take training and not all dogs can catch a disc - those with smalled noses like boxers might find it more difficult. But have a go and hopefully next time there will be more types. But again, it depends on who qualifiers. If you have a breed that wasn't in there, then start training and make sure you get there next time. Should we complain that disc dogs is a male only sport since all the qualifying handlers were male? Don't worry about your throwing guys, that's a big part of a training clinic. And though you'll probably get dirty looks from your dog, they always forgive your crappy throws. In fact, some say that it makes a better disc dog when they have to watch the disc carefully to know where it will end up rather than having a great thrower who puts them in the same area each time.
  6. oh good! Wouldn't want to give the butcher any more "evidence" you're nuts.
  7. The flank is the hind leg kind of area - not what you want. You want lamb ribs and these are sometimes called lamp flaps. This is what the dog bones in bags you get in the meat section of Coles are - you would just need to trim them.
  8. I'm not sure. Dog has torn ligament off bone so two bones are no longer connected. Vet has suggested an L-shaped plate across the joint to stabilise it. I guess that's fusion of it, yeah.
  9. I'm after experiences with how it all went (healing times etc.) and how successful it was.
  10. This years is being called the "inaugural" one so it sounds like they intend to - and of course, we all hope it does.
  11. That is very true AD. It's a shame it's all US footage, hopefully next year it will be locals.
  12. Every time I see your fantastic photos, I always think just how under-utilised Duke is!
  13. Jibba - Yes! That it is very much a dog weekend, not just a sports competition. :D The website has a link to buy tickets and all the info you need.
  14. Oh I just realised that one of my dogs qualified for Dock Dogs! Brock the choccy BC is from my first litter. For anyone looking for accommodation, I have found a place, Burwood Lodge and Burwood B&B. They both accept dogs and are only 6km from Acer Arena (and under the allowance competitors are being given!).
  15. As far as I know there is just a few people in Sydney who are doing dock diving in this country. I'm sure they want to build it up but for now there's nothing. For the upcoming World Dog Games they have put together a team by calling for try-outs rather than already having people so it may not even be running in Sydney yet. Your biggest hurdle in getting something started here will of course be finding facilities.
  16. My opinion too. So sorry you've had to go through this.
  17. Yes, on channel 7. eta: Not live or maybe even soon after, "over the summer" is all the timing they'll commit to at this stage.
  18. I got mine through Amazon.com - not in Australia but they send here.
  19. Safe landing is landing on all four paws at once, not only back or only front as many dogs tend to do naturally. The most common exercise we do to teach them to jump out rather than up and to land flat is called "overs". You start out sitting down with your feet against a wall (so the dog can't go around you - not everyone needs to do this nor continue to do it). You hold the disc above your legs and give a command to take the disc. Your dog jumps over you legs taking the disc out of your hand. They have to lift the back end or hit your legs. You do this from both sides - you the start making the jump higher by lifting your legs and eventually moving into a standing position. The Getting Started page on our club's website has a PDF brochure with more information as well as Training Tips (including a far better descriptions over Overs ). There currently are clubs in Townsville, Gympie and the Brisbane area. Congrats on qualifying AD.
  20. I still disagree completely but yes, I understand what you think "editing" means.
  21. Ah ok, a difference in definition of what "editing" is then.
  22. Oops- what do I need to fix??? You don't need to fix anything I simply don't have any options that fit me - I'm neither a "purist" nor do I not have an editing program. How can you possibly class what a camera does in creating a photo file as editing a photo?
