  1. My house seems to be overrun with geckos. The dogs have now noticed they exist and are waking me up at night scratching at the walls and trying to climb on things and I've had enough. So, what can you do to rid your house of geckos?
  2. Kind of. I don't say things like "come to mummy!" to the dogs but when pretend talking to the dogs about my partner I refer to him as "Uncle ..." and he refers to me as "mum". He gets "Uncle because they are my dogs only and so like a human mum might get her kids to call her new boyfriend "Uncle", that's what we do.
  3. He could be sitting slightly differently on his bum (to relieve soreness) and the angle is pushing it out. Nothing to worry about unless it gets stuck out.
  4. My Bullmastiff finished growing height at around 8 months and finished widening by 3.5 but a Mastiff is a much bigger dog and these things vary greatly from line to line and dog to dog. Having sperm is the least of the checks you should be doing before deciding to breed. Are you intending to breed DogsNSW registered Mastiffs? It is not very common for a male dog to be used where he is not a show champion (or at least out in the show ring proving his worth). Have you considered how hard it is to find good homes for such large dogs? As others have said, you need to speak to the breeder of your boy. It is a massive responsibility you are considering, please don't take it lightly - and please please do not believe anyone with dollar signs in their eyes. It doesn't work like that unless you have no care for the dogs involved.
  5. And though I early desex some pups, I fully support you having your opinion that it is bad (even when it's expressed in such a confrontational manner). There ARE subjective issues in so many decisions we make for our dogs, so it is easy to find people with opposing opinions that are just as valid as each other. And I was more talking about the standard cry that "you don't know the full information" rather than just your post; so I think we're both trying to stop the merry-go-round starting. Though without them, DOL probably wouldn't exist.
  6. As long as the pro-choppers continue to tell people the only reason they are against these things is because they are "illogical" or "ignorant to all the information" there will never be a change in stance from anyone. There is just as much logic in your reasoning that they are no different (or that desexing is worse) as there is in seeing a difference based on intent.
  7. It's far more palatable because it isn't done for looks. There are certain health advantages to desexing; it is impossible to get cancer of something you don't have (uterus, testicles) and desexing also reduces the chance of mammary tumours if done before the first season. There are other debatable advantages, and yes there are disadvantages but at the end of the day it is felt by most to be an advantageous thing for the dog. Most people equate docking and cropping with chopping off a leg because you think tripod dogs look cool. It's the intent and need that is important to most, not the scale of the surgery.
  8. I am confused. Are you saying it's alright for certain groups to say they're better than other groups of breeders so long as they don't say those other groups are bad? Yep thats pretty much it. Promoting your own group isnt the same as kicking hell out of anyone who in your opinion doesnt do what you do. But the very act of saying you are "better" than someone, means that you are also saying they are "worse" than you. You are splitting hairs if you think what the MDBA does is any different to what you're getting so upset about here. You don't need to "kick the hell" out of someone to bag them.

  10. Yes it's illegal and it has been for many years. Many are for it but I think it's ugly and unnecessary.
  11. DogsNSW have an issue there, while the litter registration form says what you've quoted, the Regulations document for naming dogs doesn't list the same restrictions. As far as the regulations say "of" is fine in Qld but there is a rule about not using other prefixes in the dogs name so you aren't supposed to have "prefix blah of <other prefix>" - but I've seen names that have gotten away with this.
  12. I'm yet to see anyone who's missed the assumed point of the article; only people who think the point isn't valid or think it hasn't been made by that article. still standing by your statement ML? Did I not get something? If I didn't, it's because I wasn't really that into it. I did skim it. Bad me. No idea Dory, I've gotten no answer. I have a feeling there was a mistake with the term "missing the point" vs. "disagreeing with the point"

Yes. Feel free to post or PM me which posters have not understood the point the article was trying to make.
  14. No, he's not that kind of vet. He explained that he vaccinates at 2 months, 3 months and then 15 months old and then leaves it until the dog is about 6 then vaccinates 3 yearly (we were talking C3/C4). He said the dog still needs to have a yearly check-up but doesn't see the need for KC vaccines (though at the same time, he doesn't believe there is any proof of harm from using them).
  15. I had decided not to vaccinate my older dogs (2 vax as puppy, at 14 months, 4 years and then stop - they are covered until at least 7). But my vet was hassling me about getting vaccinations done recently and says that he feels vaccinating young and old is required but missing in-between is ok. So now I'm confused again.
  16. No probs. That might be the more useful page, since it has all the DogsNT rules documents on it.
  17. Here you go (page 4 of the PDF doco).
  18. Oh wow, I've seen a dog have a mild case of that (matches the video anyway). I never would have connected it to EIC given there is no collapse though! I have no doubt that the example I've seen was simply a case of the dog pushing itself too far (and the owners letting it). It will be an interesting to hear the results of that study.

  20. Did his doctors tell him it was caused by secondhand smoke?
  21. I used to smoke and I would try to go outside and keep the dogs inside whenever I smoked. But there were times when they were exposed by myself or others. I think it's best not to expose dogs but it's not something I think bad enough that I would ever say something about or think badly of someone for.
  22. So if its steps, you'd have an "avalanche"!! Most definitely!
  23. Many Border Collies would be a "rush". The more you have together, the more they try and outdo each other and get wherever it is, first!
