That is saying something! It's great with my fearful reactive dogs (who are predictable), and I also use it with my low threshold prey-driven dog when she spots birds etc.
-
Me too - until I started to play "who's that?" from Click to Calm. Basically, as soon as the dog looks at something that MAY trigger them, while they are still relaxed (ie you have nanoseconds) say "who's that" in a happy voice and shove a treat into their mouth. After a few goes, your dog will look at you when they see a trigger, and both you and the dog remain calm. I love the 'Look at that' game from Control Unleashed which is a similar concept. Works well with my reactive dogs.

For those that have used co enzyme Q10, did you notice any difference? Is it given before symptoms start to show?

Dolers With Brachycephalic Breeds Of Dogs
kayla1 replied to Moselle's topic in General Dog Discussion
Recently one of my dogs began choking on a lump of cheese that he had stolen off the bench. Fortunately I saw it happen and managed to get the cheese out just as he was passing out. Sorry to hear about your boy. -
I've had rescue dogs with absolutely brilliant recall from day one, whereas some others took longer to train. Not all rescue dogs have bad recall - it really depends on the individual dog.
-
Thanks Helen, I'll try that. He really is a sweetheart, and he has improved since he first arrived. I'll pick up a copy of that book too.

Couple of months now. sas: I didn't ignore him initially, but didn't overwhelm him with attention either. Though I did implement NILIF from day one. Thanks Aidan for the link. He has improved since he first came here - was quite stressed initially and very underweight. Back then he would get up during the night and check to make sure I was still in bed.

I have a foster dog that is very clingy with me, to the point where I can’t walk anywhere without him glued to my leg – not just by my side, but physically touching me as I am walking (which of course means I am constantly tripping over). He also has to know where I am at all times, and if I disappear into another room he panics and runs around the house until he finds me. But interestingly when I go out he seems fine – he knows I go out the front door and then come back in that way. It’s when I suddenly ‘disappear’ in the house that he panics. I reward calm behaviour such as when he goes to his bed, practice NILIF etc, but I’m not sure what specific things I can do to help him feel more confident when he is not by my side? He’s an 11yr old Brittany that has lived his entire life in a backyard with no stimulation. The poor boy does get confused quite easily.

Oh yes, some are more active than others - I was just surprised to hear of the extremely active field dog variety! Anyway good to know I wasn't missing something, thanks!

A Surprise In My Brother's Border Collie Litter! - Updated
kayla1 replied to Ashanali's topic in General Dog Discussion
Gorgeous puppies! I love them all. -
I've been in the breed 30 years and never heard that one! Oh good, wasn't just me then! (not that I'm an expert) I was told this particular dog is a 'field dog variety' CKCS which makes him an 'extremely active' dog...
-
Can someone tell me what a 'field dog variety' is? Someone recently told me their CKCS is a field dog variety and I'd never heard of it before. Haven't read the whole thread so sorry if it's in a previous post.

I had a similar experience when I took one of my dogs to an eight week course run by a Delta trainer. The trainer was unable to help with my dog's issues and for the entire eight weeks I had to work away from the group, with no improvement by the end of the course. I felt like I had wasted my time.
-
The Delta trainer in this area won't deal with dogs that show any aggression (dog or human). She sends them to another (non-Delta) trainer. ETA By 'this area' I mean my area.

Is there a Brittany thread in Breed Sub Forums? Can't seem to find one. Thanks.

The Ups And Downs Of Dog Training.

Control Unleashed is a great book. I ended up buying it twice - the dogs ate the first copy I bought. :p -
I haven't used them on my dogs but I know other people who have had problems with them staying on the dog's feet.
-
Yes mine get chicken wings frozen together too. One of them is a hoover and it seems to slow him down.

Crate Training 2 Dogs At The Same Time
kayla1 replied to poodle proud's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I trained two of my dogs at the same time and just rewarded when they went into their own crates. Now they know whose is whose. -
Is it possible to train a reliable recall with a dog that bolts in fright at loud noises?
