  1. I haven't walked my dogs around the local streets for a long time now, I know of too many attacks in this local area alone to risk it. For on lead walking I drive to quiet areas or open spaces with good visibility so I can keep track of approaching dogs. This works well most of the time, except for when irresponsible owners allow their dogs to run the entire length of the oval to get to mine - but at least I can see them coming and it gives me a bit of time. For off lead time, I give them a run on private property.
  2. Coco is about a week into his month off now, and no episodes of the intense spinal pain that he used to get before starting trocoxil. So in that respect it's been a lifesaver for him. A couple of other problems have surfaced though. He's had to start on heart meds, and he's also developed a right front leg limp. The chiro vet said it's a disc problem in his neck causing referred pain, and there is possibly something else going on with his shoulder - so he's had a cortisone injection for now, and if there's no significant improvement over the next week then it will be xrays to check for arthritic changes or osteosarcoma. Temperamentfirst, is your girl's front leg limp part of the arthritis? Hope she is continuing to do well.
  3. Sounds like she's in good care. :)
  4. Poor girl. Is it a reaction to the bite or do the vets think there is something else going on?
  5. Glad to hear he is feeling much better. :)
  6. Thanks ness. Yes I understand it's a bit hard to tell with Kenzie's issues. I'm nearly out of glyde so might try the rose hip for my older dogs.
  7. If a product doesn't align with your own ethics then don't use it. But for the people who choose to use it and are getting results, and it sounds like there are some good results here, then good luck to them. It's obviously helping their dogs, and sharing their experiences may help others too.
  8. Bumping this thread to see how the doggies are doing on the rose hip. Also, a question for those using it, does the rose hip replace other joint supplements like glyde or are they given in combination?
  9. Hi Kayla, I use Superboost spinkled over their evening meal of dry/raw food. Sonny has 1 level spoon & Stella has 1/4 spoon. I just went roughly by the directions,Sonny has 3/4 cup of dry food per day & Stella has 1/2 cup. Unless I have misunderstood them. Very possible but we have positive results here :) Thanks BC Crazy, that's good to know. I might give it a try then if it lasts that long. Glad you are getting positive results. :)
  10. BC Crazy, how much of the superboost do you use for it to last that long? Do you make the vegie mix too or just sprinkle it on their food?
  11. I know I shouldn't but I can't control myself, maybe it's because I'm a "dangerous weapon" like my dogs. I'm at a loss at how you think any of this is even remotely funny. RIP poor little Elfie.
  12. Poor boy, that's awful. I hope he gets some relief soon.
  13. I'm so sorry for your loss. Oakley and Chloe were very lucky to have found a loving home together. Run free Oakley.
  14. What a beautiful little girl. It sounds like you have some lovely memories together. I'm very sorry for your loss.
  15. Oh how awful, your poor girl. Gee it must be a highly aggressive cancer.
  16. I hadn't heard of the aggressive type of cancer that your boy had, but it sounds like he is very lucky to still be here with you. Hopefully others can also benefit from the knowledge of these vets.
  17. I haven't had too much of a problem with fleas lately, until the other day that is when Annie started to itch and bite. When she looks like she's been bitten then I'll give her a capstar and bathe her in calendula tea, and use pure aloe vera for any skin redness at the base of her tail. Most of the time this works for her, but occasionally if it gets worse and the skin becomes infected then we're off to the vet.
  18. He won't hunt for food - he will for toys but not food.. I am not game to get up and walk around at the moment. I wish he was a curl up and snuggle dog (Ollie dog was) - Zig is more of an out and about man.. A real social butterfly. Ah ok. I was going to suggest cuddle time on the couch too but sounds like that's not an option either!
  19. Treasure hunts are good too - hide the food and then let them go.
  20. What a beautiful boy. I'm very sorry for your loss. Run free Hamlet.
  21. Poor girl. Not sure if you have been there already, but I've heard good things about the Animal Eye Care centre.
  22. The lesson here, kayla1, is that you obviously did something correctly and, additionally, you were dealing with a person who, after the initial disappointment and anger, was reasonable, understanding and capable of looking at the bigger picture. That's a major factor isn't it...a different person in the same situation may not have been so understanding. There are some fantastic potential adopters that would provide wonderful homes but, in some cases, just not for the dog they applied for. All you can do is reject and explain as nicely as possible, suggest alternatives or other courses of action, and hope that they understand. I don't think anyone enjoys rejecting good applications.
  23. Lots of beautiful photos. Love this one. Wow Snook, that cemetery looks beautiful.
  24. Also re rejection reasons, sometimes it's more of a feeling - I remember meet and greets where the people were lovely, dogs got along great etc, but there was something not quite right. One in particular was rejected, and I didn't hear anything from her for a few days, then she emailed and said honestly that she was initially angry with the decision and was tempted to write back straight away and tell us how wrong we were...but she didn't, she stopped to think about it first and realised the dog was not the best match after all. She ended up getting a cat and is perfectly happy! But it is very hard to explain to a potential adopter that something is 'not quite right'. So I agree with SSM re real reasons, and when people relay their experiences about being rejected, I'd want to know what the real reasons were before making assumptions about any rescue group.
  25. Agree re being courteous, helpful etc. However I don't believe rescues send people to pet shops...people do that by choice, not by force. There are plenty of stories of successful adoptions, it's just that for whatever reason we don't hear as much about them on here. I meant that their attitude made people steer clear of other rescue groups and just go to a pet shop to avoid the hassle. Yes, there are 10s of thousands of successful adoptions over the years, but it doesn't hurt to give those rescue groups who are performing a bit of a help. Agree that bad experiences may put people off, but I don't believe rescue groups are responsible for people's choices in going to a pet shop. If people really want a rescue dog but are rejected by a particular group for whatever reason, there are other options - other rescue groups, shelters etc, remembering there are groups/shelters that don't have extensive procedures. So whilst I think there is certainly room for improvement within rescue...rescue doesn't send people to pet shops, people do that by choice.
