I dont agree with that. I got my dal pup on Sunday. He was put next to his crate when he came home with all his toys in it. Within an hour he would go and claim my other dogs toys and take them to his crate. It was also where he has been going to go to sleep (or the sofa). So if he was scared didnt show it. Also with crate training, I wait for him to cry before i get up. On sunday night it was at about 230am and again at 6am, Monday bout 230am and 5am. Last night it was only 5am. This is also the only time that he has cried at all while being in his crate. I also believe it works wonders. I open the door he walks straight outside does his buisness, get praised (the only time i talk to him), then he goes back into his crate. The only time i have had problems getting him back in is at 6am when the sun was up and i think he thought that it was time for the day to start. Other than that within 20min i am back in bed and so is he. It has meant Kruzer (who by the way is sleeping in his crate right now, door open) has peed inside about 4 times (6 weeks old, mainly because i have missed the signs, or havent heard him at the door), and NEVER pooed inside. Now i never crate trained my beagle, (got at 8 weeks also), and there is no way she took to it so quick. So Crate Training!!!

7 days until i get my pup, but i have the same question, i 2 had a crate (bought on ebay), but stupid me wanted the biggest i could get so ofcources it aint gonna fit in the car. I do however have an old cat carrier. I was gonna use that instead. I thought holding him would be the wrong thing (with 2 in the car ofcourse). So am i worng and should have someone with him on there lap? (sorry to hijack Chaconne)

That suxs Charli. My dog use to chase at my cat and the cat would retreat. But i also had a beagle, so when she was 8 weeks old the cat was actually slightly bigger, so i think that might have helped a little bit. But when the dog got older she did actually stop chasing her. So helpful your german shepard grows out of it. Try to make every interaction possitive. There will be people on here that can help you more. But is the dog being aggresive towards the cat?? Or more wanting to play?? If its aggression you might wanna get some profesional help. But here is hoping your dog grows out of it.

I am no expert, but i can tell you my experence with my cat and dog. My Cat must have been about 4yrs when i got my 8 week beagle. Unlike you though my cat was badly abused as a kitten, so she didnt (and still dosent) like other animals. She wouldnt even come and sit on you or next to you at this stage and i would have had her about 3yrs at this stage. When we first brought Coby (beagle) home the cat hid for a couple of days. She got extra attention and thankfully the beagle couldnt get to her as she was confined. However the Karry (cat) could get to coby. So evidentually (days) Karry would come out and sit high up and watch coby. She did this for weeks. There where times when i thought they would never get along. However i never forced Karry to go anywhere near Coby until she was ready. After a week or so Karry would come on the ground in the same room as coby and sniff at her when she was sleeping. After a while she came down when the dog was awake. However Coby would get excited and run at Karry. Karry would hit Coby on the nose with her paw. Never any claws, just a dominace thing. Anyway the dog learnt not to run at the cat from this, and the cat was never in trouble for doing this. So over time the cat started to chase the dog and play with coby. However too this day if the dog gets too close or out of line the cat hits her. Right now they are both sleeping on the sofa next to me, one on my left, the other on my right. They never curl up together, but when the cat wants to play, the cat will play. But she has control over the dog, which with the size difference i find important. On another note, having the dog i think has actually brought the cat out of her shell, she now is much more trusting of other animals and humans. Sorry for the story. I aint trying to scare you and say it will take weeks like it did for me. I aint saying i didnt anything rightm but i thought you might get something out of there that might help you in some way. My cat and dog are about to be introduced (10 days!!) to a new Dalmatian pup, so i am as nerves as you about them all getting along again. So good luck

Some of your are amazing. Mine isnt that amazing but i was very proud. My beagle was about 6mnths old (now 6yrs) and we where at the shops. She had always been hit on the nose by the cat when ever she got too close to the cat (never cut her or anything just a dominace thing). Anyway walking back from the shop there was a much larger dog walking with a guy, without a leash thay came running towards coby. Like any owner my hard went into my mouth. Any way so this do runs up to my pup. Then my pup just sat down and wouldnt move. Then when the other dog got to her, WHACK, Coby just hit her right over the face with her paw, just like the cat always does. This fully grown much larger dog has turned and ran. The owner is then chasing after him going "My dog, my bloody dog". I couldnt help but laugh. Lesson have your dog on the leash or control it. I have never seen coby do it again. But it is the proudest i have ever been of her. Needless to say she got an extra special treat when she go home. -
