My 2yr Golden Retriever Zoe is 26.5 kg and i wish to have her with more weight on her. She does run around alot with our other girl who is a perfect weight, but Zoe has only been with us since week and to me she does feel and looks like she needs more fat. Zoe is difficult to get to eat very much in one go, hence the reason she's on two meals daily. Zoe currently eats chicken mince, RMB, she also gets veggie slop and she will also get natural yoghurt a few times a week. She refuses to eat offal, i don't know how to get her to eat it, but she can be extremely fussy and I was wondering what higher fat meat and RMB would be suitable for her. Her daily intake is currently 3% of current weight. She will eat Chicken carcasses and she will eat lamb shanks and she will also eat small marrow bones. I haven't had her long enough to try other things yet. Any help diet wise appreciated.

I have also heard good reviews for it, one of my girls wont eat dry food and the other gets the runs with any dry food. I would have tried it out possibly, but i decided to go the natural way and give the raw diet. My 3yr old has been tried on several different brands, and currently she is eating half Bonnie Adult and half raw diet and her poo is considerably smaller and quite a bit harder than when completely on dry. I am leaving her on half of each just until we can wean her completely onto the raw diet and have finished the dry food. Good luck with it, i am sure you'll be happy with it.

I tried Chicken liver with my girls tonight and they wont have a bar of it either. Is there something to give for fussy dogs, my 2yr old i havent had long (adopted her) and she is difficult to get to eat much really. She is currently on 3% of her current weight broken up into twice daily as it is the only way to get her to eat her entire daily intake.

kizzybear: i have replied to your other thread in the palliative care forum (spelling?) My golden retriever had extremely advanced stages of lymphoma. Biopsies taken of spleen, stomach, liver and intestines showed Lymphoma was present in all those organs. Her lymph nodes were also extremely enlarged and we felt lumps in her neck and we were told we would have her a week maybe two at the most. We made a decision to let her go with the little dignity she had left as she also had diabetes, hip and elbow dysplasia as well as arthritis in other joints, pancreatitis and she also had an immune deficiency problem. She was a very unwell dog, and it was in her best interests to be put to sleep. If you can keep her pain free and comfortable while you can, then go for the natural treatments if it is going to give her and you more time together pain free it is definitely worth it. good luck to you both Lucy was pts November 6 2008 just 6 weeks prior to her 6th birthday.

Is There Any Alternative Treatments For Dogs With Lymphoma?
Sankari replied to kizzybear's topic in Palliative Care Forum
It is very heartbreaking, i personally have gone through it with my golden retriever who was given maybe a week or two if we were lucky from diagnosis. Hers was extremely rapid and advanced that it had spread to many organs. We had Biopsies taken and the vet told me absolutely nothing would help her or give her any more time given how fast it had advanced. She was just under 6 yrs old we had her put to sleep not long after diagnosis, she was smiling on that day which she hadnt for weeks, so i think she knew we were doing the right thing by her. My advice is research and try and find something that may give you a little more time with your girl. We were very unfortunate not being able to have her longer, she was so special to me, and i still miss her very much. She left us November 6 2008. I had to do what was right by her, she was in a great deal of pain, and i couldnt bare to prolong her pain. I say if your girl's Lymphoma hasnt caused any pain or hasnt spread yet, then go for it and keep her comfortable and happy until such a time you need to make a decision on what is best for her. I am sorry i am no help with alternatives, but definately go for it and good luck. Give a cuddle from me to your girl. -
Thanks. I got Chicken liver today and the girls loved it. My 2yr old Zoe seems to not eat everything all at once, just goes back to it. It could still be the settling in phase, not sure as we only got her Monday just gone. I could only get my hands on that for the moment, and i'll be going to try and source other offall tomorrow hopefully. I dont have a very big freezer for dog stuff, i can use the human freezer for the mince, veg slop and the bones, but my mum doesnt want the offal in their freezer, has to go in the garage one which is quite small, so could probably only fit about 1kg in there at a time as my rabbit frozen water bottles is in there for hot days. I couldn't personally feed rabbit to my girls, They might think it is the same as my rabbits and want them as well! Thanks for suggestions of what to get my hands on, will be looking around for some biggish butchers to get it from.

Just wondering for those who feed the raw diet, what offall do you give to your dogs? I am starting the raw diet and not sure how often to give offall as i know it is very rich. I have heard once a week is fine? I have 2 GR's, one who doesnt eat kibble as she hates it and nothing i can do will make her eat it. I figure it is better to just go the natural way. Both girls will be on the raw diet, i just want Charlotte to finish off her kibble then will make the switch permanently with her also. For the moment Charlotte is on half raw and half kibble, and Zoe is on the raw diet. Zoe's poos are quite significantly smaller and harder than what they were when i adopted her last monday. I am very impressed so far with this diet and Charlotte seems to be a little better in the poo department also once she's on the raw diet completely also i think she'll be heaps better also.

puggy puggy: you seem to know quite a bit about barf feeding. My new dog Zoe wont eat dry food but absolutely loves raw so i am making the move onto 100% barf for her and slowly doing the same with my other dog who is tolerating bones and meat very well now. I am going to be doing 3% and alter if needed depending if she needs more or less. What raw meaty bones would you most recommend for Golden Retrievers? The chicken mince they get is out of carcasses every day and they get chicken frames to eat every second day and they love them. I will be trying either kangaroo or lamb or beef i am not sure which to go with as of yet with them to see if they like that also. I see you feed offal once a week, is there any particular type i should give?

Thanks. Lucy was so funny when she was naughty and it she was so sorry when we discovered the towels. Lucy was quite funny when she didnt get her way she would face the wall and sigh it was funny to see, would hear her sighing for ages Yes, I am comforted in knowing we did everything for her and she is now at peace pain free.

yes we lost Lucy last month, she would have been 6 yrs old last week. Still miss her terribly, but i know i did what was best for her. She had an extremely aggressive Lymphoma which had spread to many organs in her body and she was about 15kg underweight which was rapidly going down. She was too sick to fight and treatment was no option for her as she was starting to have neurological symptoms on top of it in the last few days.

Willow was a beautiful dog. Sorry for your loss, I am sure she's looking over you from rainbow bridge and playing with my 2 Goldens in rainbow bridge Lucy and Cloudy. What a fantasic way to honour Willow. I am a Volunteer at an animal shelter, and it's the best place i have ever worked out. Yeah it's not paid work but who cares at least i enjoy it. I have been there 11 months now. Willow loves you and she knows she will always be in your heart. Never is easy losing a dog suddenly of a young age. Goldens are such lovely dogs. To me they are like angels from heaven.

Can anyone tell me what areas of victoria are tick areas? I am going away in January from Mill Park in melbourne to Gembrook Victoria with 2 Golden Retrievers and wondering if there are ticks there or near there? If there is what treatment prevention is recommended i get to give them prior to going?

I intend to leave her on the dry food as well as having some raw in the diet. Tess32: Charlotte had very bad reactions to chicken wings last year and to marrow bones and she also reacted to lamb which is why i scrapped doing any raw at all. I am quite concerned as i have extremely slowly introduced the minced carcasses if she will do ok on non minced foods. With Charlotte things need to be extremely slowly introduced to her. When changing dry food it has to be done over a 2 week period to not cause any stomach upsets. I am trying to do research but one of the threads i went into the poster had edited everything and it was blank only with people's responses but dont know what the questions were. I havent done a proper raw diet in such a long time i think i could do with trying to find some information with how to do it. Finding the information i need i am having trouble with. I have the book Raw Meaty bones but havent read it yet.

yes, it is minced from carcasses. So my golden's ideal weight should be around 28kg, i am no good at working out percentages is there something that can work it out for me? The place that i get chicken from have heaps of different meats. I'm going back there again soon, so i can give all different meats at the same time and dont have to just feed the one type?

Can anyone tell me how much raw should a Golden Retriever have? I have slowly introduced a bit more raw each night as she had very bad reactions last year and havent fed any raw or bones since then until just last week. She eats 2 cups of dry food currently and so far i have gotten her up to 150 grams of raw chicken mince. I intend to get her on more but what is the usual guide of exactly how much she will need? She is an active very healthy dog with no health problems. My other Golden Retriever is arriving next week and wish for her to be on raw and dry food as well she is 2 yrs old and that i know of no problems with foods so far at the shelter. Should i slowly introduce to her like i have with Charlotte? I have also tried a lamb shank with Charlotte, the marrow out of the bone gave her a bit of the runs but otherwise she was ok with it. Should i only feed the one type of meat or can i mix if they do ok on other meats as well? I dont know much about raw feeding. Is there some links?

Thanks everyone. She really was a sweetheart. I will never forget her. She was a rather different Golden Retriever, she hated water and puddles would do her absolute best to avoid them in fact. Our Lucy had the best home she could, and i know she was thankful to that. She may have been a sick dog and battled endless health issues which sent me broke, but i loved her so much. I occassionally have broken down a bit in the last month but I think time is starting to help me. Danois: Lucy LOVED cake! Well when she was allowed to have it when she was younger and didnt have pancreatitis episodes and wasnt diabetic. Lucy has lots of friends to keep her company i am sure. Cloudy our Golden we rescued last year went to rainbow bridge 7 weeks after we got her. She was 7yrs old and had ruptured a disc in her spine which caused paralysis of her back legs and she was incontinent. We let her go July 5 2007. In the 7 weeks we had her, she looked out for Lucy. She is pictured in my avatar.

I havent put this up yet, but there is no time like the present. My Lucy came to us at the age of 16 weeks. Was malnourished, a nervous wreck, riddled with worms and basically in a terrible state for her age. Through thick and thin, health issue after health issue, we did everything we could for Lucy. She had the best life she could have had. She got hip dysplasia and arthritis in several joints at the age of about 10 months. She was on medication her whole life. Many she had adverse reactions to, but we still tried our best for her. Lucy had a very bad episode of pancreatitis this year and then she continued to drop weight extremely rapidly, and nothing we did could keep it on her. I knew it must have been something very serious. We had blood tests done which came back ok, we then went for an ultrasound which showed enlarged lymph nodes. Our options were to get biopsies which was done and eventually the results were back and we eventually got a diagnosis of very advanced Lymphoma. We did the right thing and gave her her wings. Lucy will always be remembered and always be in my heart. You may not physically be with me anymore, but i know you're looking down on me. Lucy was in alot of pain and the Lymphoma had spread to several organs and we knew it was time to let her go. We were told the cancer would have been there only a short time but unfortunately she was one of those unlucky dogs that had the most aggressive form. 19 December 2002 - 6 November 2008. Always thinking of you Lucy, would have been your 6th Birthday on Friday This is Lucy the day we got her at 16 weeks. This is my favourite photo of Lucy. And lastly the very last photo taken of my girl Lucy was my special girl. She was my very first dog i got at 15.5 yrs old. She was an angel. She may have always dug holes her whole life with us, and buried my mums best towels deep down into the dirt which were missing for over 6 months, but she was a good girl most of the time. Didn't take too well to new people and was always scared of people at first. I will never have another dog like Lucy. Lucy was my heart dog. It is just over 6 weeks since Lucy left us.

No I Did Have An Appointment Booked In For Today
Sankari replied to OhMarley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When i was doing grooming we had those kinds of people. Plus the ones who complain that their dogs had to go short when they were in disgraceful condition with the matted fur from head to tail nearly down to the skin, most had to come off on a #7blade because of the lack of care from the owners. They ask us to get the knots off but expected still to be on a #3 blade. I got so frustrated with some people especially the ones who came and insisted they had appointments and they didnt and my boss would just give in to them and do them anyway. It meant i had to be there til anything up to 11pm at night having started at 8am that morning. I absolutely hated it those terribly long days and nights. My advice, always book very early in advance to avoid disappointment.
