  1. My goldens play like that too. I just let it run its course. They arent as bad now. I have had Zoe (2yrs old) for nearly 4 months now. Neither end up with fur in mouth but Charlotte (older one 4yrs) chases Zoe and bites her bum. Real facination there. Zoe nips Charlotte's ears and Charlotte's ears always look most untidy. I would just let them sort it out themselves unless it gets severe i never step in.
  2. Congratulations LP and kinta. Glad to hear they're safe and sound.
  3. I was just wondering, anyone know how I can get more socialization with other dogs for Zoe. At the moment she's only getting it at obedience training and we wont be there for 3 weeks due to Easter and being busy the following week. Every time i've gone to the park to see if there are other dogs to get some socialising there are none there. We adopted Zoe in December 2008 and have been attending obedience classes since early feb with her doing very well so far. Any ideas welcome. ETA: I have set up a playdate for Zoe with an Am staff. Is there anyone in Mill Park area interested in getting one on one socialisation?
  4. I havent fed either of those brands but i have heard good reports about Royal Canin. My dogs get completely different diets, Charlotte eats Advance which she does extremely well on, and Zoe gets a range of raw including raw bones and Bonnie Working dog. She does exceptionally well on that food and as long as your dog does well what does it matter what brand you feed. You need to feed both what your dog does well on and also what is in your budget. My budget used to be smaller but Zoe eats only a quarter dry and the rest raw, offal (kidneys, livers & hearts) and she also gets a little natural yoghurt so her diet is extremely low cost so i can afford an expensive food for Charlotte.
  5. My last Golden retriever had a terrible problem with hers, having them emptied every two weeks and were always infected. Had a good diet, so the decision was made given every two weeks they were causing terrible problems to have them removed. It costed $400 for the surgery and she was much happier and healthier. We were aware of the risks involved and were prepared for the possibility of faecal incontinence and decided it was the best option. She came home with alot of stitches and drains stitched on both sides of her anus. She had incontinence for 5 days but was perfectly fine after that.
  6. I live in Mill Park and go to Warringal Obedience Dog Club. They are absolutely fantastic! Have helped me and my dogs so much already.
  7. Thats for sure. She's a very fussy eater very weird dog i tell ya. She is my 4th GR and the other 3 have all been VERY food motivated and reasonably easy to train. Chicken is working for her at the moment so will keep at it with that.
  8. Thank you LukeW. That video is a huge help. I dont have a clicker, but is there a particular type which is best.
  9. Yes it is on lead with her on my left side I am trying to teach it. She is a fussy dog, but she does like chicken so i'll try that.
  10. Can anyone help me to teach Zoe my 2yr Golden Retriever the drop command. I have tried pulling the lead down and pulling her front legs out but it really isnt too effective. What ways would be easier to teach the drop command? I adopted Zoe in December and has had no other training other than the classes i have been doing since Feb. She is doing well in other commands, but we are having problems with her drop. Any suggestions of what ways it can be taught appreciated.

    Lucy

It has been 4.5 months since my Lucy left this huge hole in my heart. Not a day goes by i dont miss her terribly. Today is just one of those days that everything is just so much and I am having a real breakdown day. I have been crying on and off just missing her so much. Why is it so hard
  12. I have woodshavings everywhere it gets walked in the house and all. I have rabbits and the dogs eat the woodshavings and faeces on the ground and what i walk inside. Never done any of them harm.
  13. That sounds terrible, hope everything goes alright for poor Sophie. Good Luck with the test results and give her a big cuddle from me.
  14. We feed Advance to Charlotte (3.5yrs) and Bonnie Working dog to Zoe (2yrs). Zoe gets more raw than dry so it really is only breakfast and lasts her forever! Both girls are doing extremely well with their diets so i am happy :D
  15. I do agree there, people can feed whatever they want to their dogs. But if people are going to make recommendations to certain diets or foods then i think they should be careful with what/how they say it.
  16. The OP posted this because he/she found it interesting not to bag owners who feed certain diets or particular meats. I myself feed dry food to both dogs with one dog also getting raw either chicken lamb or beef. My other dog with her stomach issues i find it much safer to only let her have dry food. What your dog does well on is what is important
  17. Load of baloney! I have been feeding one of my GR's Chicken wings and Frames either defrosted or frozen depending when i remember to take it out. She also gets Chicken mince, Offal twice a week and Dry Bonnie Working Dog and her teeth are as white as ever, coat is great, has nice weight. Have very good results and i am happy
  18. I had a dog have them surgically removed. Diet changes didn't help and were getting infected and full within 2 week periods. It was decided that it was best to have them removed. After that we never had scooting or any discomfort. Be careful though, it is a delicate surgery and have to ensure the vet is confident enough. She had faecal incontinence for 5 days then she was fine and resumed normal function. I think it was due to the drains and all the stitches she had. She wasn't overweight, had a good diet and still had the problem. Neither of my current girls have problems with it. Good luck and hope all goes well for your little fella
  19. My previous Golden Retriever came out in the same thing - welt like bumps. I remember finding a big spider in her bed and she always came out in that same thing when bitten by spiders but it was really bad. This is a close-up of the reaction she came out in which extended from just above the desexing line, inside back leg and right down to just above her girly bit. It was incredibly itchy and she was biting and scratching them constantly. We took her and got some cream for it which didnt really help very much, but i tried some human cream someone told me about that i use on rabbits and thought it might give some relief. It was called A'kon Pure Emergency Gel. It gave her alot of relief.
  20. Pyohex lotion i think it's called is supposed to be usefull too. Hope you get rid of them soon.
  21. It helped my previous dog when she was young and had arthritis (got it at 10 months old). It worked wonders on her for a while. Some people say they give tablet form what exactly is the difference other than the obvious.
  22. Just curious but what brands and types do you all give your dogs? I give both my girls Wagner Glucosamine Chondroitin with MSM Powder every night. I mix it into their food with a little water. Just interested to hear
  23. What a ridiculous thing to say. A BARF diet is not appropriate for every dog out there. I have a dog here who is intolerant to red meat, she has a combination of raw and Royal Canin. And she does very well on it - BARF was not for her. Snr, I fed my dogs on dried food for years and they did well on it - yes they were healthy They have always had some raw meat and bones incorporated into their diet. The two that are on BARF now are loving it, and it agrees with them. Some vets don't agree with feeding BARF but if your dog is doing well on it - by all means feed it and don't feel like you have to feed dried. But a BARF diet is not the be all and end all when it comes to feeding I agree. One of my dogs cant tolerate BARF either. She is on dry and is doing better on that than when on BARF. My other dog is on 3/4 BARF 1/4 dry. Like huski I believe not every dog is suitable for BARF. My other dog does very well on it, but i am afraid of not balancing properly so give a little dry for breakfast as well.
  24. I am thinking of getting insurance for my girls, what would be the most cost effective and do they all have a waiting period? The waiting period does that mean if something happens say for example a cruciate injury they wont cover it? Very new to this, havent had insurance for pets before so not sure what to look for in an insurance company.
