  1. I like BDJ's theory - does your puppy also pay attention to the ceiling at those times (assuming that your puppy isn't hearing impaired)? If they are looking up at the same time, it is definitely simply a noise that human ears will miss. (Dogs for instance can hear termites and bats as well as rodents and birds nesting in the roof cavity.) If not, then do, as df suggested,. take a video of his action with you to the vet. And try to report to the vet anything that you think could be triggering the action. For instance, does it mostly happen just after he wakes from a nap? or a certain time after eating? or just after he jumps off furniture? or when the new puppy is getting extra attention? just after he finishes exercise? Any sort of observation like that would help the vet immensely.
  2. To the OP: you won't win any adherents by posting fake news. It is just as bad as using a picture of feedlot beef calves to moan about dairy calves "being ripped from their mothers". Sensible people really don't like others trying to manipulate their emotions with lies. So I suggest that if you want to raise awareness of dog abuse use actual verified facts and not manipulative lies. A bit of actual research will ALWAYS get your point across better then proven lies.
  3. Facebook is mostly where it's at. Pound pages, dogs in need pages, pledges pages - so many.
  4. Can't resist! It will be fascinating to see how well I've guessed when the results come out. Did myself proud on the practice!
  5. She should consider Tibetan Spaniels. Most tibbies would prefer someone home all day, for sure, but if they get a puppy and and your sister is willing to put in the work to accustom the pup to being on its own for several hours each day then it could work very well. Since there is very likely a few months before she returns to work, then this should certainly be possible in that time frame. A good breeder will help you pick the right pup to suit the situation and, in my opinion, you have a much better chance of getting a Tibbie without a predisposition to separation anxiety than many other small breeds. Edited to add : most of the small non-terrier breeds do best when they have access to the home when alone - at least to the laundry area.
  6. I didn't make myself clear - yes you are correct, cities have been around since Sumerian times, and earlier in Asia, but haven't been connected with leisure time for the common folk since well into post Industrial revolution times. And we are agreed that landraces (rather than breeds) tend to be developed by the common folk, who until recently have not had the resources to spare for a dog that was companion first and only. Street dogs are NOT deliberately developed they interbreed without interference. Nature develops those!
  7. @sandgrubber An interesting topic. I see landraces somewhat differently. Terriers/whippets have already been mentioned. Schipperkes and other odd and assorted breeds have also been developed by common folk, as have quite a few of the older vermin hunting, carting etc. breeds in Europe and elsewhere. In Australia many of the hunting landraces (pig dogs, bullarabs, staghounds, vermin terriers all for example) have been developed by the common folk and not aristocracy. Common folk tend to develop breeds from necessity, and eventually aristocrats refined and standardised most of those breeds for bragging rights. (Modern breeds such as the Doberman which were deliberately developed from scratch are the exceptions that to me prove the rule.) Because urbanised living is in itself a modern invention, there hasn't, I suspect, been time enough yet for the common folk to have helped create a landrace just for companionship, that may take another few hundred years. Thus, no companion breed landrace at this stage in history. The strictly companion breeds that we see today tend to be upper class developed versions from different landraces - as only the upper class has previously had the leisure resources to demand a pet that had no other use than companion. Only time will tell if the relatively recent invention of leisure resources for the common folk will lead to the development of a strictly companion landrace.
  8. Exactly. You can register with just one dog but it is expensive. You are the only one who can decide whether it will be cheaper than moving house again, which would appear to be your only other legal alternative.
  9. I am so sorry, I know how much you loved him. It is never an easy decision to make, but thank you for helping him so that he did not need to deteriorate to advanced debility. I love your choice of memorial tree. Hugs.
  10. My foster dogs all sleep in crates indoors every night, they are fine with it. Most dogs are fine with sleeping in crates if introduced properly to them and especially if given their meals in their crates. Here is an article about introducing your dog to a crate and getting them to accept the crate in a single weekend.
  11. I agree that your best bet, if you choose to stay in that council area, is to register as a Domestic Animal Business. You don't have to have heaps of dogs already to do that (just heaps of money). here is the how to and fees for Brimbank Council.
  12. Ethical US rescuers that I know label this sort of thing "retail rescue". It is not really rescue at all, but simply supplying a market.
  13. Possibly the buying at auction began with the honest intention of preventing those dogs going to puppy farmers. But obviously it has gotten way out of hand - those producing for commercial breeders have found another assured market in these rescues and the whole thing has backflipped. These are the same rescues that will say "oh, no, don't pay money for a dog in a pet shop to "save" it, you are just supporting the puppy farmers." They don't seem to realise how hypocritical the whole thing has become. It is almost on a par with those (to my mind, unethical) US rescues that were actually importing dogs of popular breeds to 'rescue" and ignoring dogs in need in their own regions. More than one rescue in Australia that I know of actually buys ex-BYB and pf dogs to desex and rehome. They certainly do not make a profit at it and rely on donations. These do tend to be breed rescues. We don't have breeder's auctions in Australia, thank heavens (possibly excepting top working dogs occasionally). Many rescues keep an eye on Gumtree and will try to convince someone rehoming an adult dog (for a price) to surrender it to rescue - sometimes the seller has only put the price on to filter out bad homes and puppy flippers etc. so it is worthwhile to ask. Other rescues stay strictly to rescuing from kill pounds. I guess there is room for all types. We all live for the day when rescue won't be needed anymore.
  14. Great Danes are not high energy dogs and though there may be the odd one out, none that I've met would ever keep up with a cattle dog or most working dogs for that matter. I'm sure GDs would enjoy a short hike at a modest pace though not a long or strenuous one. I do agree 100% that most have very sweet temperaments though. You might be right @juice but as I was reminded recently we have to remember that general public is reading this.
  15. No other dog registry in Australia has taken steps to become an Applicable Organisation in Victoria, probably because they are not willing to police the ethics of their members as Dogs Vic is doing. Until your breed is recognised by the AKC or the FCI there is not a snowball's chance in hell that the ANKC will recognise it. Only new breeds developed here may be recognised by the ANKC and that is a long process that takes 15 years at minimum. In the short term, I don't see that any other dog registry is going to step up and prove themselves to the Vic government either. Three of the cat registries have done so. I would suggest you look to moving to another council, where in return for a mammoth annual registration fee, they will allow you to keep an entire dog.

    My 2 Oldies

Ish I know how much you care for all of your GSDs but the ones that have been with us the longest have the biggest pieces of our heart and it is, as you say, so very hard watching them slow down as age and illness take their toll. I have outlived so many seniors and they have all been special. Bottom line is their lives are just too short.
  17. Also you should ask your vet to supply a written report to be given to the breeder's vet.
  18. Growing puppies of his age do need their naps. Crate in the bedroom with you, as has been suggested. Some puppies like a large stuffed toy to sleep with in their crate - but others will proceed to de-stuff the toy - only one way to find out which category your pup falls into. Try the night potty break on a leash and ignore him until he potties then heaps of praise, a quick cuddle then back to bed. Puppies will try to have it their own way but are happiest if you insist on a routine.
  19. My bet would be that your neighbour's dog is in heat and that is what has triggered the change. Yep, it is time to get him desexed and don't let him roam on his own again - it puts him in far too much danger in so many ways on this modern world where idiots with baits and weapons roam. It will take a few months after desexing for his hormones to settle down, but once they have you shouldn't be faced again with the personality flip that has come because a very strong mating drive has been unlocked.
  20. Shepparton Animal Rescue currently have a 4yo silky cross advertised. Lexi All Paws Rescue in Melbourne have this 6 yo silky mix advertised. Molly.
  21. How do other rescuers cope with comments about dogs up for adoption being too pricey? It has always been my habit to respond to such comments with an offer of a special deal - instead of an adoption fee, they can reimburse all the vet fees paid in respect of that dog! (99% of the time, those fees will always exceed my standard adoption fee of $350 for a fully vet worked small or medium dog). That usually shuts them up. I guess this is just a rant after I had to resort to my usual comment after a "shame she is so pricey" remark on a FB ad this morning. And while I am whinging, am I too strict for insisting on meeting the other dog(s) in a prospective adoptive household? I insist on a meet and greet on neutral ground that includes the other dog because if the foster and the other dog take an instant dislike to each other (which can happen) it is just hell for everyone and a waste of a trial period. But apparently I am being 'too difficult'. Sigh.
  22. What are the ingredients in the oil please? And what was the actual diagnosis from the vet dermatologist?
  23. This confuses me. the standard Bull Terrier will be much closer in size to the Amstaff that you had than the miniature version, which are roughly the height of a Jack Russsel Terrier, though heavier. Bull Terriers tend to be midsize between Staffys and Amstaffs.
  24. When I got that email I was angry. It seemed to me that all PetRescue was worried about was losing donations from people turning away from rescue. It also shows how far away from on the ground rescue they have drifted - very quick to blame rescues but where, for all their big salaries are the heavily publicised articles telling the general public what to expect re reasonable response time frames and etc.? Where are the emails to rescues suggesting that they update their pets with a "Hold" notice as soon as a certain number of applications have been received, to give themselves time to sort them out? Or how the rescue volunteers can set up an automatic email to acknowledge receipt of an enquiry which gives enquirers a general time frame by which to expect a response etc? Where are the explanations to the public from PetRescue that small young fluffy dogs can attract literally THOUSANDS of enquiries - all of which have to be sorted for suitability in the time available to volunteers, some of which have been generated by enquirers who have looked at the picture but NOT read the ad and who don't offer a suitable home at all? All that email said to me was that Petrescue is totally out of touch with true rescue.
