  1. I would absoloutely get bloods run There are also medications that can be used for many behavioral situations, you need to find a vet that is experienced with these drugs and behavioral problems for it to work though. I know alot of people arent overly keen on medications but i think if it gets both of you back to being happy, it would be a good step :p
  2. Took some cute photos the other day, has been waaay too long since I picked up my camera. This one I have played around with in photoshop quite a bit and love how it turned out
  3. My vet usually can do cruciate for 1000 - 2000 depending on the dog and how bad the injury is Alot of your normal 'local' vets are able to do it at a much cheaper price. Ask her if she trusts her normal vet to do the procedure/if they can. If not, maybe ring around and go see another local vet or try get some recommendations for a local vet.
  4. Just quickly, if the sedation isnt ACP they may be talking a full sedation such as domitor. This will completely knock him out but it isnt the best for older animals as it lowers blood pressure quite a bit as well as heart rate/respiration can drop alot also depending on the dog. Personally I would rather try the dog wide awake with a muzzle then go straight to sedation. Id wait for your normal groomer if you can
  5. Awesome thanks for posting the new challenge It sounds very fun/challenging. So would going to the zoo and waiting for an animal to do something interesting considered documentary photography?
  6. Wheres the may challenge!! Im going zoo on tuesday so hope I can get some nice photos for the new challenge hehe
  7. Most places will charge a dispensing fee, my clinic charges anywhere from $6 - $15 depending on the actual medication (e.g. something that needs to be made up is more expensive) and it is just shown as medication it doesnt actually say dispensing fee. I need to win the lottery
  8. Hahaha I knew about the money before I started. Just makes me angry when people want me to be paid even less by not wanting to pay for anything dont have the body for exotic dancing
  9. I get so annoyed because I am on such an incredibly low wage and it makes me so angry that people think vets are a ripoff when I cant afford to actually move out and live on my wage. How about they also think about the poor vets who study for a minimum of 5+ years then graduate and are on a lesser wage then most people yet they work 10x harder then any GP. They diagnose, treat and do surgery. Most of them are brilliant people and it is so annoying that people will whinge about an $8 dispensing fee. There are alot of nurses/vets on here and Im sure it annoys/upsets them as much as me.
  10. I havent heard of a blood taking fee, but for the extra time it does take for some animals to get blood from them due to them being scared/stressed/aggressive it might be warranted.
  11. Took this photo at Easter have been very slack this month!
  12. I wasnt going to reply to this thread because I am sick of people whinging about vet clinic fees They are a business people! Yes we want to help you and your animals as much as possible, but we cant do it if we cant make money! *Vent over*
  13. Sorry jackie but I have read this thread and I am quite disappointed that you feel someone who doesnt ask lots of questions is an irresponsible pet owner. Being a vet nurse, our clients trust us 100% when it comes to these issues. For many of them, the one question they seem to be able to ask is "what happens after?" and that is about it. Euthanasia protocol is not common knowledge among pet owners and they expect the professional to know what to do and how to do it. I have never worked in a clinic that as protocol will sedate an animal first. Owners want their beloved pet to pass quickly and peacefully. Sedating them and waiting for it to take effect can take awhile(5-20 mins depending on whether IV or IM injection) . Many sedations will also cause poor circulation which in effect would take the euthanasia to take longer. (Sedation is normally along the lines of domitor).
  14. I also thought dogs were trained to do the bark/act scary thing as people are going to be much more scared of a barking/lunging dog than a dog that is sitting there quietly n calmly. I loved the show :D
  15. Sorry stormie, i absoloutely agree with you. I wish my clinic did take away the decisions for owners in regards to IVF. Unfortunately I dont think it will happen in alot of clinics due to financial issues.
  16. Absoloutely disagree that IVF is a waste of time. We definately recommend both bloods and IVF. Bloods - not all animals who are in early stages of renal/liver failure will be showing clinical symptoms. Approx 2/3 of the kidney will be non functioning before the animal really shows signs visible to us. Not sure about the liver. I think doing pre an bloods is best practice and it should be offered and let the clients know exactly what we get from them. IVF is so critical. Anaesthetics that we use (Iso in particular) often cause a drop in blood pressure, if the animals blood pressure drops during surgery we can give a bolus or up the fluid rate to counteract that. I think it was something like an animal only has to have low blood pressure for 20-30 minutes to cause damage to organs (kidneys in particular). Cant remember why, but my vet has gone through this with me when I started there as she wants to ensure all her nurses understand the importance of IVF. I think it is really poor practice that a clinic wouldnt recommend fluids for any animal, regardless of age/health status. Vet clinics should be offering their clients everything they have available to them. I actually think it should be compulsory for all animals having surgery to be on fluids
  17. It does sound alot, but it is probably around what desexing should actually cost. Desexings are hugely discounted and so now people expect to get it done as cheap as possible. If they werent discounted so much, maybe I would get paid more Now.. I would ring up and see exactly what was included in the invoice. You will probably find pre anaesthetic bloods were done, IVF were done and possibly if the bitch was coming into season, some clinics will charge extra as it becomes a more difficult/risky surgery. Hope you work out a compromise with your puppy buyers!
  18. As Crisover said, lots of different options. Should be started by 16ish weeks. Options include; Sentinel - monthly chew that covers adult fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm Interceptor - monthly chew that covers intestinal worms and heartworm Monthly Spot ons (Revolution (i think) advocate) SR12/proheart injection, once a year, alot of people have differing views on the use of it Daily tablets (not sure of brand names) You just need to work out what will suit you the best and go for that
  19. First photo for this challenge, really havent had much time for taking photos but went to Grants Picnic Ground today for some relax time and lots of photos This is one of my favourite
  20. Absoloutely going to try and make it :D Will be great to practice

    Hachi

I actually watched this on a plane trip back from Thailand but i got so teary I had to stop watching Very touching movie though
  22. I absoloutely understand that lappiemum  sorry if it didn't come across that way! I absoloutely saw alot of the people showing they clearly loved their dogs. It really is special to see the differences between our culture and theirs even though I didn't always like it.
  23. I've just come back from visiting Thailand, and the seeing all the streetdogs of Thailand is amazing and quite sad. They all seem to be so aware of their surroundings and very street smart though you occasionally see the odd dog limping from old injuries  The last photo i think may have been a fighting dog Lots of scars, but a lovely darling who just wanted a pat when i went near.
  24. Awesome news Get that extra fat off him!, will do him no good as he gets older (I may be a tad crazy about overweight animals )
  25. I'm a vet nurse and I trust all the bigger dogs (e.g. staffy, german shepherds, dobermanns, etc) way more than the littlies (e.g. maltese, poms, chihuahuas) and thats purely because in my experience, most of the smaller dogs that come in tend to be snarly little tykes that try and bite bite bite. BUT.... if I am out walking, I am more wary of larger unrestrained dogs than smaller unrestrained dogs purely because the bigger dogs can do alot more damage. I always study the dogs body language to try and determine whether they are friendly or not but it isnt always possible so I absoloutely understand why those people may have avoided your off leash staffy.
