Sun Burn Cream For Dogs
Blue Fox 001 replied to Blue Fox 001's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
:D So I ordered some "Sunshade" from Plush Puppy for her and will recommend she puts a light kids summer T shirt on her for the beach if they're going to be out in the sun all day. Thanks again for your help everyone. -

Sun Burn Cream For Dogs
Blue Fox 001 replied to Blue Fox 001's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks for the input guys. I usually do the Snap #2 Clyde and as a short summer length I'm getting quite use to it, although I would never do it to mine , but the client came in asking specificly for as close a shave as I could do, like a men's No 1 she said. Deciphering this I assumed she didn't want a #40 so did the Snap #1 and it was all over, ears, face and tail. It was one of those clips you hope she never tells anyone where she got it done but she was happy when she got the dog back! I can't see her using a rash suit, but the doggy ones look great AnimalMad. If she puts the Filta Bac all over the dog and takes her to the beach she'll just end up with sand stuck to her fur Think I will get in some of the coat protection and if she decides not to take it I'll keep it for my poo :D -
Had a lady on Saturday ask me to clip off her malt short, which I did with a Snap on #1 - not sure what the equivalent blade length is as I am at work and can't check length from here. Anyhooo it is the shortest I have gone and I could quite clearly see her lovely pink skin through what was left of the coat, I warned the owner to be very careful that she didn't get sunburn and to keep her out of the heat of the day etc... BUT she has asked me to get her some sunburn cream for the dog and I have no idea where to begin I have seen UV protector for coats but does this just protect the fur from tinging or will it actually create a barrier for her skin. Is there any human product eg. babies zinc cream that is safe or anyone can recommend? As I say any help greatly appreciated before this dog gets sunburnt?

New Puppy Living With Older Dog & Other Questions
Blue Fox 001 replied to poodle proud's topic in Puppy Chat
Ohhh he still got heaps of attention and he is a very well adjusted little man  I don't think he is any different to if he had been an only dog, or had the heck smothered out of him. He is relatively obedient, but when he isn't it's our fault cause we haven't done enough with him but apart from that he is great, very outgoing and confident; but then I think that has a lot to do with the breed and the breeding as well as his formative first weeks with the breeder AND us of course. I am so glad to hear the tide seems to be turning for you and the dogs. Eventually they'll be the best of mates like our two I'm sure. -
New Puppy Living With Older Dog & Other Questions
Blue Fox 001 replied to poodle proud's topic in Puppy Chat
Well it doesn't sound like you'll have any problems with the older dog bowling the pup over and generally playing rough It might just be a matter of time for the older dog to understand that the pup isn't going anywhere and for him/her to warm up to the idea. I certainly wouldn't force the issue, I'm sure they will come to some sort of understanding even if they don't become the best of buddies. We always acted like we got the pup for the older dog not that the pup was ours. So not patting the pup excessively or spending a lot more time with the pup than the older dog - this was very hard throwing the ball together, patting both at the same time. Ours had to share the back of the car together when we went places so the pup didn't get any special priviledges that the older dog didn't. Good luck, give it some time and see how they go. -
Our puppy is now almost 7 months and until this one (and DOL) I had never heard of crate training. Honestly it has made toilet training an absolute breeze. I also have a fairly new open plan house, I have hardly had to clean up any mess because if I couldn't give the pup my 100% concentration he was in his crate or outside. I can't use baby gates much either so he has the run of the place but I also watch him so we have not had any major chewing disasters, one chewed vaccum cleaner cord when I though he was asleep while I groomed the other dog but he was so quiet cause he had a mouth full of cord (not plugged in but I could have kicked myself for being so stupid). He is definately not allowed free rein of the house while we sleep - although I did fall asleep on the couch the other night with him and when I woke up he was still asleep next to me too .

New Puppy Living With Older Dog & Other Questions
Blue Fox 001 replied to poodle proud's topic in Puppy Chat
We just kept reinforcing what we wanted from the older dog with a very firm NO when it looked like he was getting too rough. Our pup would squeal even if the older dog didn't actually bite him so it was hard to tell if it really was too rough but we figured if the little one was scared then it was too rough so we'd say NO. We did have some time outs where we seperated them if it was getting too full on but that was mostly so the pup would also learn what was acceptable behaviour. Our GSD is very responsive so a few No's or Leave it seemed to do the trick and he would give up. Now we take them to the beach and if a play fight erupts there is no stopping them but pup is nearly 7 months old now so he can hold his own and is usually the instigater of any rough play; but at home a firm NO will stop both of them in their tracks now. -
I have been following your thread too - hope you had some good news or he is at least showing some signs of improving. Gosh it must have been quite scary for you watching this happen to your pup
-
You can get life vests/jackets for them which might help relieve her anxiety about going under the water while she gets her arms and legs co-ordinated to actually swim I must say I have never used one but they look pretty groovy
-
Only one vet for quite some way around here and she has told me $240 for all three eg. Parvo, Dist and Hep. Really not sure what I am going to do with my two next year. We run a small boarding kennel so I must know they have immunity, we will accept titre tests from clients as long as they are within the past twelve months. I rang the RSPCA and couldn't get a definate answer on whether titre tests complied with the CoE, they pretty much said it was our call to accept them or not. Suprisingly at $240 for the test we haven't had anyone ask yet if we will accept titre results .

Shame the OP did not ask these questions before purchasing the pup. I agree with you on that one gareth , I just think you catch more flies with honey and now he is asking if we don't turn him away and he gets some quality information then maybe the pup will get the life it deserves. Unfortunately very few people seem to put in the time or effort to find out about their chosen breed before actually bringing the puppy home! DOL can be a great place to learn and receive many opinions, often quite differing opinions, it is then up to the individual to decide what they are going to use and what they won't.

I am not sure how to quote so will just cut and paste ... Should have thought about that before you bought a Pitbull. Otherwise why get a dog if you dont like the smell etc etc?? You have a restricted breed, and, while keen, sound as if you don't have much idea of what is involved in keeping a pup/dog of this breed. So your parents were reluctant to even let you get a dog in the first place? Doesn't sound like the ideal living situation for a puppy or dog. Now I am well aware that many of these posters are well loved, long time DOL posters and far be it for me to suggest they don't have the pup's well being at heart, I am sure they do but the tone I read (and as I say maybe I am a little sensitive) is just a tad on the side of "you don't know what your doing". I respect much of what these posters write on DOL and have taken many of their suggestions and put them into practice - thanks Perspehone & Clyde Maybe the OP doesn't know what he is doing but at least he bothered to ask.
-
Who did that? Can you quote that bit please, cos I must have missed it. Do you seriously not read the first half page of replies and feel like the OP was getting a grilling? Perhaps I am too sensitive but if it was me I would wonder why I bothered posting! I am not having a go, but often inexperienced new dog owners do not get their questions answered, and no questions is a stupid one, but because they do not intend treating their dogs like we do or have a different opinion than we might hold they get made to feel like they are in some way inferior. Please don't tell me you haven't seen this on other threads?

There are plenty of people who keep their dogs outside (even here on DOL ) not 24/7 which the OP never said the pup would be. Very bad form to make the OP feel like he is a bad dog owner for asking I reckon. It is the quality time you spend with your dog either inside or out which will count towards you have a well adjusted best mate. As others have said training, for any breed, is the most important thing. Not necessarily formal obedience training if that's not what your into, although they are great places for socialisation for your pup and a wealth of information for all dogs owners. I mean teaching the dog manners and to be a good canine citizen, a dog you want to spend time with and who is a joy to take places with you. Come, sit and stay really are the basics and your dog will be a much happier one if he knows where his place is in the heiracy and some basic commands that he can respond too. Most dogs want to please their owners and giving them boundaries makes for a happier dog (and owner). You have a short coated breed who will not require the weekly bathing and daily brushing some of us dufuses got ourselves into . He has a low maintenance coat, and with minimal effort on your part will not smell at all. Good luck with your pup. Read everything you can get your hands on, ask questions and don't feel overwhelmed. I am sure you will do the best for your new best friend and it isn't rocket science, even though others might have you believe it is.

Crate train him. There are many threads with lots of good advice on crate training on DOL. We did with our boy and it was the easiest, cleanest house training I have ever had. We had maybe a total of 5 accidents in the house, three of those were in the first two days while I learnt to interpret his signals and no poo's at all. He is now 6 months old and will let us know when he wants to go and will even start going down the stairs to get to the back door. We have not had an accident in over 2 months. The main object is to always have your pup toilet outside, every single time, no exceptions. If you can't be watching the dog he is in his crate where he won't toilet or outside where if he does he is in the right spot anyway. And lots and lots of praise, I mean over the top praise, and treats every time he goes to the toilet in the right spot. And remember if he does toilet inside, it is your fault, cause for what ever reason you didn't get him outside when he needed to be. Everytime he goes to the toilet it is an opportunity for you to get it right for him so he can learn as quickly and easily as possible what is required of him.

New Puppy Living With Older Dog & Other Questions
Blue Fox 001 replied to poodle proud's topic in Puppy Chat
When we introduced our standard poo pup to the older GSD I was home for a week so they were always supervised when together, after that the pup was often crated or kennelled seperately but they were next door to each other and so could talk as it were through the cage without the older dog doing any damage. This only continued for about 3 weeks and then we put them in together and now they spend every minute either with us or together and we haven't had any problems. Mind you our GSD is older and quite placcid so we never saw any real signs of aggression, the pup would squeal every now and again but it was mostly out of fright when the GSD was putting him back in his box and reminding him who the alpha dog still was Come and see us in the poo thread too, we love photos **hint hint** -
