Has Anyone Here Ever Lost A Dog To Chocolate?
carebear replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
lucy's never really had chocolate but maddie has gotten into blocks of chocolate before and never even been ill... sometimes tho she has seemed a bit not herself afterwards for an hour or so but then she's back to normal. -
:D not more zoomies! lol... ok while the zoomies are fun in their own right, the hyper activity/jumping/mouthing that usually goes with it is very annoying! lol we got her out of it ages ago, but then lately she's been getting worse! when i call her to me, and when she gets there i say sit and give the hand signal and she jumps trying to get to my face! (which is also not good for her hips!) she just does not listen when hyper coz she'll do it if she's not hyper. no more hyper lucy! no more!

very interesting. i didn't realise genes played a part in it.

give them some aloe vera? as in part of an actual plant? (sorry now i sound really dumb! )

lol main reason i was asking for this was coz mum said it might be coz she's in pain from her hips and it's making her age quicker??? (or something similar) she doesn't even remotely act like she's in pain and is still very energetic and loves to run/play fetch. and we're not forcing her to do either as she'll frequently just run around doing zoomies in the backyard n when she wants to play fetch she'll bring her toy to us and if we're sitting drop it on our lap and if standing with drop it ON our feet. just in case we didn't realise she wanted us to play lol

was just wondering what causes a dog to start going grey besides old age? reason for this is my not quite 2 (2 in may) bsd x gsd has been going grey around the muzzle for a while now. i noticed it sometime ago on her bottom lip, it was once black but is now mostly white/grey and her top lip is pretty grey now too (she's catching up in greyness to our 8yr old staffy) was just wondering what might be causing this.

Treatment Options For Hip Dysplasia
carebear replied to FlippingKazza's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
my pup was diagnosed with severe HD at 13 months after dislocating her left hip. i have decided to not go through wtih the operations as the one where they cut off the top of the ball of the leg and replace it with a plastic bit, will only take away pain, won't stop dislocation, and the total hip replacement the actual bit they replace only has a lifespan of 5 years, and as she needs both hips done, at $5000 a hip plus that i'd have to do each one again within 5 years after that (at least twice in her lifetime n e way) i thought it was best to not put her through the operation 4 times. (can only do 1 at a time) i decided to go with injections that help with the pain and with help slow down the onset of arthritis. she's predicted to be crippled by about 4 and she's not quite 2 now. she also gets shark cartlidge at night with her meal i haven't noticed whether the injections have helped or not as she never showed she was in pain before. she loves to run, loves to play fetch and is a VERY active dog. her hips are pretty good in the sense that, as she has virtuatlly no sockets, she can get away with doing a lot without it popping (twisting and turning etc). when her hip popped the first time it was an unfortunate accident. she ran up to the back stairs too quick, got to the 2nd step with her backlegs and slipped through. when she twisted to get out, that's when it popped out. damage was done before we could get to her. she must of learnt her lesson tho as she doesn't take a running start going up the stairs n e more. btw i can't remember what the injections are called, but they are once a week for 4 weeks then once every 6 months, they are also only about $18 an injection. eta, i didn't have her hips scored, but 2 different vets said the xrays were the worst they had seen. her hip "sockets" are virtually flat, almost no cup to them at all. -
i would prolly pts myself (not knowing the WHOLE situation of course) but if there are lots of tumours, they are probably likely to come back after being cut out anyway, and u said the cat was never good under anesthetic, chances are she might not come out of it too. but it is ur choice, that is just my opinion.

tybrax, you met my friend at ashanali's place for the xmas bbq. she was the only dogless person there i think lol (she's definately more of a cat person than a dog person)

my friends beloved ginger tabby sadly passed away last night due to kidney failure from what the vet said was an internal blockage. he showed no sign anything was wrong until he could no longer walk. your mum wishes you had shown her some sign, so she could have helped you. the vet said he could of operated but it was too late. felix, your time came too soon and your mum misses you so much. you were too young to go, only 3 years old. your mum saved you after you were neglected, abused and then dumped. rip dear felix!

perhaps people didn't respond coz they had already taught their dog this... i know that a few of them lucy already knew, also decided to take a break for a bit on teaching tricks as trying to perfect her obedience (mostly drop from stand and a couple of others she seemed to 'forget' at puberty) and recently started agility... am keen to teach her the tricks she doesn't know yet (the close/open drawer ones for eg) in a few months... perhaps the tricks could be monthly instead of weekly to give the dogs a chance to learn the tricks really well b4 moving onto the next one?

this one sounds like fun!

i used the above method last week with lucy and was VERY successful, only had to help her lift her paw twice and she's been doing it ever since without food rewards... she's never been overly food orientated, my praise seems to be enough... even got her to do it with her other paw in the 2nd session... (she's one smart cookie except when it comes to knowing which dogs to be "afraid" of and "scare" away - oh and we had some probs with toilet training too)... think i will teach her to walk backwards next, that one sounded like fun!!!

both my dogs know how to catch food so i guess i'll start by throwing the command in now then progress lucy onto catching toys once she understand the command... it took lucy a couple of weeks to get the idea of catchin the food hwen it was thrown at her tho
