  1. My GSD is the most social of all my dogs The most tolerant and the most submissive around other dogs. Big dorky boofhead that he is! Is he show or working line?
  2. I would be willing to bet that the Staffies I've seen may very well be BYB dogs BUT it is a fact that every single one I ever encountered was Dog Aggressive. The same goes for SWFs - the big money-maker for BYBs I think it makes a good case for only registered breeders who health & temperament test their dogs, being able to breed dogs! I would not for a minute support BSL but would LOVE to rid the world of backyard breeders & puppy farms.
  3. So true - I have ALWAYS told me puppy buyers (and put it in writing) that I am willing to take a puppy back if they can't keep it & to PLEASE contact me first but, even so, I have had 2 dogs re-homed without my knowledge One turned out ok - the other was sold to someone who thought she could use him as a stud dog. She had never had Standard Poodles, only minis or toys (not sure which) and soon discovered that an entire male Standard Poodle was quite a handful! She advertised him for sale & we were contacted by someone in Poodle rescue who saw the ad so my (then) husband bought him back. We had him neutered and re-homed him successfully.
  4. The lovely, gentle GSP I had was attacked by a mini schnauzer - his eyelid was torn and he had lacerations on his face. The owners didn't seem to think it was a problem because Wings (my dog) was so much bigger than Tyson (the schnauzer) they said "oh, Tyson felt threatened" I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I've always found GSDs to be nasty cowardly dogs who will slink away from another dog when alone but are happy to attack when in a pack. I think that GSDs' have been very badly bred in recent years to conform to the ridiculous standard - the ones I have seen at shows look positively deformed with that horrible sloping back - how they could possibly be a working dog is beyond me! I haven't seen any working line GSDs though - hopefully they are different! The other breed of which I am always wary is Staffies - I have been flamed in the past for saying this, but it's the truth - during my years as an Obedience Instructor EVERY SINGLE Staffy I saw was dog aggressive.
  5. I think she did, about a minute later :D
  6. Because dogs always extend to fill the space available Dogs on furniture - never heard of such a thing
  7. So sorry for your loss. This is the sad side of breeding, that sometimes you do lose a puppy. From your description I was not optimistic about this puppy's chance right from the beginning, (not the size so much as the bobbing head) so probably a mercy that she went fairly quickly
  8. Ummmmmmm......the OP's post is precisely why reputable breeders SHOULD be advertising on Gumtree!! I do and I certainly don't class myself as disreputable. How are people going to find GOOD breeders if the good breeders don't advertise EVERYWHERE?? I've always said that the BYBers and shonks will win if the good breeders don't get out there and rub shoulders with them and give the puppy buyers a CHOICE! Obviously if the only breeders a prospective purchaser can find when they go looking are the less than reputable ones, then that is where they will purchase their puppies. It's all about education and getting the word out there and that means going where Joe Q will be looking! Totally agree with you, Ellz - when I have a litter I advertise on ALL the online sites, as well as the local papers and the Trading Post. As you say, if the Registered breeders don't advertise there then the general public is only left with BYBs
  9. That's how I read it, too. I usually start weaning my puppies at 4 weeks (because Standards have such large litters) but there is NO WAY I would let a 6 week old puppy go to a new home, and NO WAY I would send a puppy to a new home if it wasn't well-used to solid food.
  10. I believe the RSCPA one has been a nation wide thing, ours had the same. All homes were still checked and all pets desexed before they sold. I know a lot of people who were going to get a pet from a pet shop change to the RSPCA because they were cheaper - rather see the pounds get the money than the pet shops. Well, I just hope that the RSPCA are checking homes a lot better these days - I remember many years ago some neighbours of mine getting a puppy (from memory a Great Dane/Rhodesian Ridgeback cross)from the RSPCA - they had a very small back yard & weren't prepared to put any time into training the dog-soon gave up walking him in the local park so they just left him chained up in the backyard
  11. x 2 - please do pop in - we're a friendly lot and there is a wealth of information available
  12. What Ruffles said!!! I have also just donated.
  13. Once when our bitch was in season my husband took our stud dog, Lennon, to work with him (as he usually did) he stopped at the petrol station about 2k down the road and, when he opened the door, Lennon jumped out & started to run back home . Fortunately, that was back in the days when Yarrambat was a fairly quiet place, so not much traffic on the road. The following week, after a few matings, Lennon would be at the door in the morning BEGGING to be taken to work - the only way he could get some rest. :D
  14. Thank you for one of the few helpful & intelligent posts on this thread Yes, I think people tend to forget that we were all newbies once - the 1st litter I ever bred I was on the phone to the breeder of my bitch (in New Zealand ) every few hours
  15. Obviously I'm not talking about breeders, but clearly this person is not a breeder. She might be showing, or planning to but, of course, let's make the assumption that she's either: a.Stupid b.Planning to become a BYB SOOOOO much easier than trying to be helpful
  16. No, actually, they're a place for snarky people, particularly those who were, apparently, BORN knowing everything about dogs,so they didn't have to learn from experience, to have a go at newbies Just LOVE how everyone is making assumptions here. I would go with the suggestion some other, HELPFUL, people have put forward - board out the dog or the bitch until the season is finished. I've been in this situation and I know how exhausting it can be - my living room door had huge scratches on it made by my stud dog trying to get to his daughter when she was in season. We were fortunate enough to live next door to a boarding kennel in Yarrambat so we put Sally in there for a couple of weeks - I used to visit her every day & give her a walk, so it worked out well.
  17. Whatever the circumstances, I think the dog has been lucky to be found by someone who will look after her. I can (sort of) understand that her owner's change in circumstances might mean that he can no longer keep her (I myself would have to be in dire, DIRE straights before I would consider not keeping one of my dogs) and appreciate that he has admitted it. rather than just dumping her. Thanks so much lucious for your efforts.
  18. Yes!!! I often wonder if an entire generation of school children who are now youngish adults were taught that a plural is always made by adding an apostrophe and an 's' to a word. There's a lot of it about! the errant apostrophe is one of my pet hates., I used to live opposite a boarding kennel which has a sign FULL of errant apostrophes (eg "breeder's of German Shepherd Dog's" ) . I was seeing a guy at the time who used to be an English teacher and he was always threatening to sneak over there in the dead of night & cover up all the offending apostrophes.
  19. Standard Poodles must be randy sods then, all the boys I've had have been up for it anytime, anywhere
  20. We tried that once, it put a lot of noses out of joint I got WARNED for suggesting that someone use spellcheck
  21. At least you can be assured that it stayed in one place Oh dear. I saw an ad in the paper a few weeks back, advertising "Blue Healers". I wonder what their healing capabilities were? Physiotherapy? Naturopathy? Massage? hmmmm - maybe related to the puppies I saw advertised on a poster at the local shops - Maltese/ SHIATSUcross ;) As a self-confessed grammar Nazi, one of my deepest hates is people not knowing the difference between LESS and FEWER
  22. :D :p Grammatical errors in ads are one of MY pet peeves, as well!
  23. I can understand why the OP asked for comment only from those who owned/bred docked breeds as otherwise you get hysterical comments from the sort of uninformed people who were largely responsible for the anti-tail-docking legislation.
  24. My dogs are both docked and funnily enough, their tails still wag. Even a docked rotti's tail wags. Docked Poodles still had enough tail to "express" themselves! In my experience pups in discomfort or pain, do not settle, they cry and often circle in the box and do not feed, they are obviously distressed. My pups when docked were straight back on the boob with mum and went back to feeding until they fell off the boob asleep. That is also my experience with docked puppies It will never be revoked. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. Sadly, I think this is correct :p I would LOVE to see docking made legal again, providing it was done properly by a COMPETENT vet (I stress competent, as the Vet who docked my 1st litter was anything but).
  25. I love the look of a docked tail but then again I was brought up looking at docked tails on certain breeds . The eye slowly gets use to long tails, my eye will evenutually too. The new generation dog owners will think that a docked tail looks kinda silly, it is what we have been grown up with. It is just a shame that our rights to dock have been taken away. JMO If the docking ban gets revoked, I will dock my Poodle tails once again x2
