  1. And I will chain myself to a suitable edifice in support. The French may have popularised the smaller poodles and are largely credited for developing the white poodles but they are German in origin. Even the name is a derivative of the German "pudel". Now now, peace on earth and all that, can we just settle for them being "European"? I grew up knowing them as French Poodles and later got hammered many times for uttering that name, so to me they are now just Poodles. They could be found in many countries in Europe apparently. Souff It's just that, if you've ever had any dealings with a Frenchman/Woman, you'll know that they are THE MOST ARROGANT ar*eholes. We once sold a puppy to a Frenchman (my ex's decision, not mine) who assured us "I know all about ze Poodles - my mother used to breed miniature Poodles" didn't matter how much I told him that Standards were quite different - he knew better! They ended up giving the bitch to some friends when she was nearly a year old as "she was too big for their yard" BTW - I registed that bitch as "Rainbow Warrior"
  2. Yes, either German or Russian NOT French Interesting how many people think the older style dogs look better! Poodles are still listed as French breed in the FCI catalogue. FCI 9th group hehe - I will still mainatin, with my DYING breath that they are NOT French

  4. I showed the picture of the corded Poodle to my OH & asked if we should get out boys done like that - empthatic NO. I do think that white corded Poodle is gorgeous, but obviously a lot of work has gone into that look
  5. Thanks for posting the picture of the white corded Poodle, Poodlefan - I've seen that one before & it's stunning (not that I'm tempted to let my boys grow "dreads" )
  6. It looks to me as though the poodles pictured may have had a coarser coat - certainly they look a good deal "scruffier" than the Poodles you see in the showring nowadays (athough not as scruffy as my 2 reprobates ) I particularly noticed the nice, straight back on the German Shepherd - doesn't have that "deformed" sloping-back look that GSDs have now.
  7. hehe - as the OP said - when they are 8 weeks old & destroying your house the cuteness wears off a bit (my last litter was 11 )
  8. I want Snowflake (I have a "thing" for cream-coloured dogs )
  9. You will often find that a dog who refuses to drink water will drink it if there are just a couple of drops of milk. Most dogs, given the choice between water or milk, will choose the milk
  10. I know - they used to be really strong, healthy dogs! Thank Dog, in 30 years of owning Standards I've never seen a case in any of mine - they all go back to old-fashioned New Zealand & English lines.
  11. I don't know that there are ANY large/medium breeds that could be said to be 100% free of HD. All you can do is look at the parents and any siblings, where possible. For this reason I would be looking at a pure-bred from a reputable breeder, preferably one that has both parents and can refer you to buyers of puppies from previous litters. Ten or so years ago I could have confidently recommended a Standard Poodle but, sadly, over-breeding and in-breeding has led to HD being common in Standard Poodles.
  12. What a kind offer, dyzney! No lecturing or bashing the OP - just an offer of help
  13. Just a thought, why don't you PM Steve & see if MDBA Pacers offer any sort of help in these circumstances
  14. I would like to order one of Deshonko's Teacup Standard Poodles! It wouldn't take up as much room on the floor as normal-size Standards, so we wouldn't have tpo keep walking around it! Hopefully, they're not destructive like normal Standards are
  15. Reminds me a of a notice I saw at the local shops about a year ago - someone selling Maltese/SHIATSU puppies (not only are they cute & fluffy - they do massage, as well)
  16. I thought it was trading post. ebay's better for "impulse buyers"
  17. Yes I would also like a blue bull terrier, I would like it to have blue eyes and a skin-cancer resistant dermis. Also, can you please make sure that the stubborn / independent gene is removed (tweezers should do it or perhaps pliers) before you sell it to me, money is of no object, but I want one that just obeys my every command instead of staring at me whilst wondering "What's in it for me though?". Thx I am sure this will not be a problem. Great idea - can you do that for Poodles, as well?
  18. Or pining for the Fjords! Poodlefan - this is a great idea!!! I'm assuming that these new fancy breed are self-grooming, unlike my ordinary, now out-moded, poodles Always enjoy your thread & posts but this one desrves a "DOL Theard Of The Year" award
  19. Just splurted my Gin & Tonic over the keyboard
  20. Years ago my ex & I lived in Prahran (inner Melbourne suburb). We had a yard area less than the size of most people's driveway but had 2 Standard Poodles and a GSP The canine crew were given a good long walk twice a day. The GSP went to work with ex & the Poodles stayed home doing what Poodles do best - snoozing on the couch . It was actually a much more active life than now, when my 2 boys have about an acre of land to run about & play in - I was certainly a lot fitter
  21. Whoo-hoo Hope Atlas got big hugs & a special treat!
  22. I'm sure you'll be ok - as an (ex) Instructor myself, I used to promote people when the dog showed that he/she knew the exercises - perfection is not necessary at the beginner stage - more important to keep giving the dog (and handler!) new challenges so they don't get bored. I don't know for sure that this is the thinking at your Obedience Club, of course. Anyway, don't get too worried or uptight, as Atlas will pick up on that - try to relax (Iknow -easier said than done ) Good luck to you & to Atlas - he's a good-looking boy ;)
  23. My ex reckons he saw a Standard with SA once (being walked in St.Kilda). I have heard that it does crop up in some of the US lines.
  24. I have to differ slightly from Darkrai, as regards the vocalising, but I guess all dogs are diffrent - I've had Standard Poodles for over 30 years and have found that, in the main, they only bark when there's something to bark at! Mine are excellent "doorbells" ;) ;) Wanna swap then I must admit though they can be peaceful, but make excellent guard dogs :D They do indeed - Niki was the BEST one - very protective & with a deep, growly bark!

Mine are excellent "doorbells" :D As far as the heat goes, they do handle it reasonably well, as long as they are not carrying a full coat. Don't, however, make the mistake my ex & I made - when we went to Perth with our 1st girl and it was very hot we had her clipped right down, whereas they need a bit of coat to insulate them against the heat.
