How Did Everyone Come Up With Their Dol Names?
poodlemum replied to huskies4life88's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was Poodlemum on ebay for many years, when I joined DOL I decided to make it my DOL name, as well, Not realising there is ANOTHER Poodle Mum Anyway, I've been Mum to many Poodles for over 30 years. -
awww - hugs to Daisy
-
WHAT!!!???? That doesn't sound like DOL at all

Gordons are one of those breed that people say are "stupid" - they're not - they just need lots (& LOTS & LOTS & LOTS) of stimulation. Did the breeder from whom you got your dog tell you this?
-
Harrison & Dylan are not, as far as I know, footlickers, but my Niki-Bear certainly was! I used to enjoy it - like a foot massage with a bit of gentle nibbling thrown in OMG - that makes me sound SO weird

I would absolutely 100% definitely keep him inside while you are at work. At least you know they are safe from outside dangers (birds of prey, snakes and god knows what else you'd never think of). He'll feel safer being in an enclosed area. Just turn off your power cords is all I can say, I have lost a DVD player, lamp, beater, 3 pairs of thongs, tv cord and nearly my hairdryer to her chewing. Each time THANKFULLY they have been turned off, i'd hate to think what would have happened if the power had been on. Puppy pads are great for you then, they take to them really quickly (especially on tiles as they are more inviting to toilet on then tiles). Pet shops sell them for about $30 for 30 pack (and you use 1 every 24 hours) but i just found these, 40 pack for $23 http://www.crazysales.com.au/pack-of-40-60-cm-x-60-cm-puppy-training-pads-for-puppies-indoor-dogs.html check out that website actually, so many cute pet beds etc for CHEAP!! they have a leopard print travel bed i want for Lucy, its only $15, the more you buy you save with combined postage. You could prevent these problems by crating your puppy when you're not home - I always crate my 2 Standard Poodles when I go out - they love their crate - settle down & go to sleep - I know they can;t get into any mischief there.

How Did Everyone Fall In Love Their Pooch?
poodlemum replied to huskies4life88's topic in General Dog Discussion
Harrison was given to me - I didn't meet him until the day I picked him up at the airport (he was sent from Perth to Melbourne). He huddled in the far corner of the passenger seat looking very timid, but so cute & fluffy: When he sired a litter of puppies, I HAD to keep Dylan, the cheekiest one: Both boys grew up to be stunners Harrison now Dylan now They take their "powernapping" practice VERY seriously -
hehe - wait till you get up to your 150 posts and get onto Off Topic - you'll NEVER leave DOL
-
My thoughts exactly. If you have a question, someone on DOL is bound to know the answer (plus the 20 or so replies you'll get from people who DON'T know, or people who didn't bother to read your opening post )

"backyard Breeders" Posing As Purebred Breeders
poodlemum replied to lushos's topic in General Dog Discussion
A whiff of "eau de Troll", perhaps? -
I think we originally posted around the same time. This above is different though as I am betting you knew the personality of the pup would suit them anyway and you encouraged them to choose this particular pup when they had something different in mind . A little different from the puppy purchaser who insists that the one that races up to it first must be the one regardless of what the breeder thinks. Exactly right!! With the 1st litter I ever bred I allowed a couple to pick their puppy - they chose the biggest, dominant bitch - totally wrong for them but I didn't know enough at the time to say no. The bitch dominated their household for about 15 years!

I remember a few years back a family who came to look at my puppies - their beloved black Standard boy had died of bloat & they definitely wanted another black boy. One of the white girls attached herself to the children & spent the whole of their visit playing with the children. The next time they came it was the same, so I said to them "well, looks like you've got a white girl!" They bowed to the inevitable and have never regretted it. The family were friends with my Vet, so I was able to keep track of the girl. That's why I said that the puppies would often choose their owner - I have seen this happen several times.
-
If I was sending a puppy Interstate I would make the decision. If people came to look at the puppies, usually the puppy would make the decision.
-
I think I may have to have a lie down Well, make it a nice loooong one, then - don't hurry back
-
OK, I know I'm biased, but have you considered a Standard Poodle? They are GREAT with children (you just have to watch the puppies around very small children, as Poodle puppies are very "bouncy"). They are intelligent, easy to train, extremely loving and low-shedding. The only downside is the grooming, but you can do that yourself, with the right equipment. And how could you resist this face?
-
Standard Poodles - 2 boys, father & son. The only breed I've ever owned, apart from Poodles, was a German Shorthaired Pointer - they are beautiful dogs, if a bit "spethial"
-
That's fantastic news, KHM
-
You can say THAT again!!
-
That's true - over 17 years of breeding, 2 dogs I bred died of bloat. Over the years 4 of the Standard Poodles I have owned have died: 1 at age 14 from cancer 1 at age 7 from a burst abscess on his prostate gland 1 at age 17 - nothing in particular wrong with her, just old & tired 1 at 11 from complications following surgery to remove a tumour. So I would have to disagree with the survey - the problem causing the death of the dog at 7 was a fluke. The dog who died at 11 was otherwise healthy and could have been expected to live another 5 or 6 years, at least.

Wow - good to know that so many people are concerned about the possible mis-indentification

I'm not an expert on Amstaffs, but I know many here are and might consider writing to the Age to refute this letter: Name just a sales pitch NEIL McMahon's article, ''The war on terrier'' (2/10), had an omission: it did not explain what a so-called ''American Staffordshire terrier'' is. This is a different creature from the intelligent and family-friendly English Staffordshire bull terrier. Dr Hugh Wirth will tell you that ''American Staffie'' is a sales-pitch misnomer for a pit bull terrier. BARBARA SHARPE, Preston
